Kevin Sheilds truly is an innovative musician, but I would liken him more to Eno than to Fripp. In fact, I seem to remember Eno having good things to say about the 'Loveless' record when it came out. In any case, I have to agree that 'Loveless' is a very good record. I didn't much care for 'Isn't Anything', but the second record truly is groundbreaking and is a great example of creative ways to do loop music. That record in the hands of a musician who is a studied Fripp audient could be a dangerous thing. For those of you who don't know, MBV is (or >some say was) a British band that had enormous influence on alt rock in the >late 80s early 90s. Their 1992 album, Loveless, invented a genre called >"noise pop." That last statement is really not accurate. Noise pop/shoegaze/dream pop/whateveryouwannacallit existed well before Loveless. Groups like Lush, Ride, Chapterhouse, etc. were already active and on radio in 1990. You would be closer if you said that MBV invented the genre with the previous album, 1989's Isn't Anything (which I prefer over Loveless myself, though I know this is a deviant view). But really, if anyone invented "noise pop," you'd have to award the prize to the Jesus & Mary Chain, who (along with the Cocteau Twins and Spacemen 3) was the main inspiration for the shoegazers. The JMC's debut Psychocandy out-noises and out-pops anything that came directly out of the shoegaze movement, and that was way back in 1985. I check my Email with anticipation for its arrival. I have lurked for about 4 years now, enjoying the discussions. This first post of mine comes from the latest discussions regarding Robert, "The Flash" and his interaction with his audience. I in NO way will attempt to neither defend nor explain his actions. How could I? I am not he. I simply intend to post my experiences with him. Please note that dates and time frames are approximate. My first exposure to Robert was when I was about 15 (I was not into Music at all at that time). I was very short for my age, which did not bother me, but worried my parents that I was ill or something. I was on my way to the local train station to travel to downtown Philadelphia, PA. As I walked past a record store near the station, I noticed a very large crowd in this tiny store. I made my way in to the back of the store where the noises were coming from. There sat a man with eyeglasses just like my own, dressed in black with a black guitar and 2 open-reel tape decks. I listened for a while, not really understanding the music. I was struck that this man of somewhat diminutive physical stature could generate such interest. I stayed for only about 5 minutes. I would much later discover that this was one of Robert's Mobile Intelligence Unit performances. A few years later I became interested in Music (and BTW, grew). I joined my Community College's radio station and was turned on to all kinds of music via the tutelage of Chuck Van Zyle (synthesist and host of "Stars End", an ambient radio program on WXPN in Phila., PA). Chuck introduced me to Fripp and Eno (and their individual stuff), Peter Hammill, VDGG and many others. I believe that I was too musically immature to understand Fripp or KC. Many years later I heard an interview on the radio with Robert discussing Guitar Craft. His description of his teaching method intrigued me (by this time I had begun to teach myself to play the guitar). I kept the GC phone # for many months, not feeling I had the ability or confidence to attend. Finally, I called, applied and was accepted for a Level One course. I arrived at the Mansion very early, so I spent some time in the library. Many of the book spines mentioned "The Forth Way". The first thought I connected with was the Third Reich. I thought, "Oh my God. What have I gotten myself into? Some kind of Nazi Guitar Cult!" My fears were allayed upon further reading. As an amateur with no professional aspirations, I was quite pleased with myself to be able to somewhat keep up with the professionals that surrounded me. I spent about the next 5 years going to Courses and going down to the Mansion for weekends or just a day to Practice in the Atmosphere. I attended a Music For Non-Musicians workshop once. At the initial meeting of the 40 or so participants, Robert asked the 6 Crafties in attendance to prepare a piece to be played after dinner. I was glad to be part of that group. I thought the performance went well. As I was smoking a cigarette outside, a couple of the Non-Musician attendees asked if they could take my picture with them. I declined saying that I was just a warehouse manager from PA. They insisted and I finally gave in. Although the couple were quite pleasant, I thought their request a bit strange. I still don't think I could handle multiple requests like that. Perhaps Robert has those same feelings. Perhaps not. On the subject of the "Flash": think about it yourself. After a flash photo, ones' eyes have to recover. Robert, along with playing his guitar (which I'm sure he could do with his eyes closed) also must Look at his equipment and pedals. During my years as a Practicing Crafty, Robert was always pleasant to me and Always the Teacher. If we passed in a corridor, he would greet me with a smile and an almost over-excited, "Stephen!". He would then immediately drop his face to a concerned look. Lesson: "It is necessary to look cheerful" (GC Aphorism). He also gave me a caustic Lesson. I was sitting on a couch in the Mansion during some free time. He came in and bitterly asked, "Miller time?" I took this to mean, "get your lazy ass off the couch and Practice." Please keep in mind that I do not know Robert's intentions, these examples are simply MY interpretations. I have more, but this is running long enough. Please keep in mind that Robert Fripp is an individual, as you and I are. I have traits that I do not feel obliged to explain to others and let those others wrestle with it themselves if they are so inclined. I have a few topics to cover in this posting, so let me get right to it... I received my copies on the Night Watch and both re-released videos last week as a Christmas present to myself. The new Frejus video cover looks like the Beat cover now. But I've not been able to successfully play the enhanced Night Watch CD on my PC (P-75 purchased in June '95 - Mitsumi FX 400B CD-ROM drive - Quad Speed). Everytime I put the CD in my drive, whether I have things set to auto detect or not, the CD light goes on and never goes off and my PC locks up. I can't open the CD player door until I shut the PC off and then take a small screw driver to the emergency eject screw and then turn on the PC again. Quite a pain in the butt. I have been able to play the thing at work. The Mitsumi drive uses default Win 95 drivers. Others with similar hardware should be aware of this. BTW, the music is great!! Meanwhile, I read with great delight that Fripp was coming to Chicago Jan. 12th in ET# 447. I missed all prior announcements in the papers. You'd think this ET Webidiot would know about these things! Fortunately I was able to purchase tickets through Ticketmaster online. I'm thinking of going to the Milwaukee show the day before too. Maybe I'll wear my ET t-shirt to one of these shows - I've been looking for such an occasion for a while now. Finally, please note a new link/feature at ET Web that gives you access to Elephant Tape Real Audio music from the bottom menu frame. So while you are reading stuff at ET Web, why not listen to a randomly selected audio track from Elephant Tape? There is a lot of interesting music out there, including tracks from David Cross and Tony Levin projects, not to mention a lot of talented ET readers. I was told that it would ship sometime early in January and that I should have it before it hits the stores on the 14th of January. To my great surprise, it arrived in the mail today. I had also ordered Schizoid Man which was included too. What great service! Very quick and easy. Certainly much better than waiting until the 14th and then trying to find it locally. Hey Max, I think that your fantasies are great, not sadistic jokes - and I think you're right about the way critics can be about reviews. I guess I came off sounding too harsh - sorry 'bout that. Perhaps it is because I don't know the band as well as others do, and I was drawn into the joke too easily. But for those who enjoyed the fantasy for what it was intended to be, I hope y'all don't feel that I was speaking for you. The House of Blues, in Boston, is not a good venue to see music in. It is cramped, the acoustics are crappy and the logistics of getting people in to the performance space are difficult. 2. The attempt by RF to have a non-western concert works better in some venues than in others. The House of Blues is not one. I think that if people are packed in like sardines, it is very hard to move about (RF didn't even after encouraging others to and saying he would). People talking to others interfere with others who are trying to listen and people get irritated (I include myself in both groups). A certain amount of restraint and respect has to exist or the possible level of experience is hindered (at least no one used a flash!). 3. Give the a rope and they'll hang themselves. Why is it when presented with the opportunity people with the most, inane, asinine, repetitive, boring questions possible (of course my clever questions would have inevitably fallen into one of these categories for other people). But really "Will you sign my CD?", " Are you going to do any more albums with the Guitar Guild?", "Will you talk about your equipment?" Hello is there anybody out there ?! The soundscapes although short were really wonderful. I was initially distracted by a 60 Hz or ground loop hum in the speakers but this faded as the music appeared. I felt as though between in the stereo image ( I was about center) the loops swirled and pulled you back and forth as if in a whirlpool that was sucking you in. There was other debris in the swirl and whether menacing leviathan or friendly creatures that arose in and out of the vortex. After being in a trance like state for about 40 min or so, I retreated to the back of the hall where I ran into Sanjay Krishnaswamy another ETer and we retreated to the bar for the rest of the show. The Q & A was irritating questions for the most part but Roberts answers and overall interaction. was great. My favorite was the last question (and I paraphrase) Q: What do you like to listen too?, RF " The sound of my wife's breath as her head rests on my shoulder" A cold and unfriendly Fripp, I think not. I was a great experience accept for the venue, maybe another one can be found for the next show in Boston. On another note(s) next months Musician magazine will have a Private Lesson from BB! (RF,TG,BB the rest can't be far behind! Not a very influential band this KC. My wife got me a Greg Lake retrospective (Rhino). Very good if you like GL and ELP etc. Pluses (Intro written by RF). Camzone ------------------------------ From: "Mike Heilbronner" Subject: Fripp/Bruford & Speculation Date: Mon, 29 Dec 1997 11:26:28 PST I've commented previously on the unfounded speculations by ETers about Fripp's opinions, motivations, desires, etc. I'm constantly amazed at the willingness of some ETers to draw conclusive opinions about matters that only Mr. Fripp knows or considers. Now, the issue of Fripp's opinion of Bruford has come up, and several ETers claim that Fripp has a not-completely-favorable opinion of Bruford. The evidence presented for this view consists primarily of several snippy quotes from Fripp and Bruford. Notwithstanding the potential innacuracy of the quotes and the fact that they are taken out of context, the ETers involved either ignore or discount the alleged senses of humor and sarcastic demeanors of Mssrs. Fripp and Bruford. All of the quotes can be interpreted in a number of ways, including humorously, which is how I interpret them in light of the fact that Fripp has selected Bruford as a drummer for many projects during the last 20+ years. For me, the music is all that matters. Whether Fripp and Bruford hate each other or are secret homosexual lovers is irrelevant to me (although it has nice ET tabloid potential), and I'd certainly pause and think before making an unfounded claim about Fripp's opinion taken from some off-hand quotes from individuals who are reputed to have active, dry and sarcastic senses of humor. Here's to Ted White for debunking one of the out-of-context quotes, namely Fripp's alleged claim that Bruford is bad b/c he does nothing (or something to that effect). As Miles Davis and many other composers have shown, sometimes doing nothing is the key element to the success of a piece. An aside: Best holiday gift in a long time -- Coltrane's complete Live at Village Vanguard set. It'll take me ages to digest and understand the whole thing, but it's masterful work. It was through the list that I found out about Robert Fripp's recent soundscapes tour, which leads me to the point of this post: I have two extra tickets for the Robert Fripp soundscape show in Chicago on the 12th of January. If anyone out there doesn't have tickets yet or needs more, please email me! Thanks! ____________ John Kannenberg wireshock at geocities dot com http://www.geocities.com/~wireshock ------------------------------ End of Elephant-Talk Digest #448 ********************************
