[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Subject: KC Definitive Editions Date: Fri, 12 Jun 92 12:37:02 BST From: Phil Kime I'm pretty sure these are only re-mastered. No edits. It's really strange as I asked in a really good record store here a while back if they could order me the KC stuff I don't have on CD and they talked to the reps who said that all KC CD's were discontinued except for the 4 CD boxed set of LTA Discipline etc. This was a real downer and I was really suprised to see just about all of the re-mastered KC CD's appear in the mainstream shops a few weeks later. I guess they've just been re-released. Before they all appeared, I was looking to get them on import and one outlet here wanted to charge 17.99 (pounds!!) each for the couple of re-masters they had in stock!! All of a sudden, all the KC CD's are in most stores, in re-mastered form for 8.99. Weird. But Nice. Does anyone have the release date for the upcoming Fripp/Eno thing? Goes on to say Fripp plans to reissue the catalog as "Definitive Edition" -- remastered with the CD medium in mind. All the cuts on "Frame by Frame" had already been so mastered. -paul pmartz at dsd dot es dot com Evans & Sutherland [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 12 Jun 92 10:17:42 -0400 From: Randy Alley Subject: Discography - Addition On reading the discography a possible addition came to mind. I have a sale list from a couple of years ago from Mark Ferraro, a big time Crimson collector/dealaler oops, dealer, who, by the way, advertises regularly in Goldmine. This list had a single by a group called Spontaneous Combustion which I think either was produced by Fripp or had Fripp playing on it. Anyone know of this one ? I think the title was Spontaneous Combustion - Danse Macabre (1971 ?) The Definitive editions came out a few years ago, after the same releases had already been out on cd. I have one purist friend who went out of his way to get the original cd re-issues because he wanted to hear the music the way it sounds on his lps. I have a mix of some original mix cds and some "definitive" ones, and I've never really listened close enough to hear what's different in the mixes. - malcolm at wrs dot com [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1992 13:33:26 -0400 (EDT) From: Brian Patrick Arnold Subject: Re: Discipline #42 The Definitive Edition remastered CDs of the entire King Crimson catalog were done in 1989 and released in the US and parts of Europe, but hadn't been released in England until recently (I don't know why). The Essential King Crimson Boxed Set of 1991 represents most of these remastered tracks as well, plus a couple of re-re-masters. The music has, in my opinion, been left unedited and most of the tracks are the exact same as the previous LP and CD mixes. In general the music sounds identical but has greater clarity (I sold my entire old catalog and bought the entire Definitive catalog, after trying a couple of them out). There are a couple of exceptions, to my memory, only on Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair: Matte Kudasai doesn't have Fripp's dubbed solo that was occasionally hiding Belew's part, and Sleepless is the original unremixed version, not the Bob Clearmountain remixed version that made it to the radio in 1984. I personally preferred the Bob Clearmountain version. As fas as I can tell, these are the only two songs that are substantially different from previous LP and CD releases. - Brian [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: mjgiles at ucdavis dot edu (Jason Giles) Date: Fri, 12 Jun 92 12:25:42 -0700 Subject: Fripp remastered All the new ones stickered with a "remastered by Tony Arnold and Robert Fripp" are supposed to sound better, because RF wasn't happy with what EG was doing with them, so he decided to take it upon himself to do the job properly. If you want some good details see the latest edition of Stereo Review-- it has an interview with RF in it about just what you asked. Hope this helps! I have a couple of bootleg CDs, (Atomic Fusion, Strange Tales of the Sailors) and neither of them is really listenable. Are any of the bootlegs enjoyable to listen to? Strange Tales has it's moments, but I wouldn't put it on for enjoyment listening. Date: Sat, 13 Jun 92 0:34:49 EDT I'm looking for the following King Crimson singles: Elephant Talk - U.S. Promo 12" (with dance mix) Sleepless - U.K. 12" (with bob clearmountain mix) If you can help me, please get back to me asap. I'm willing to pay fairly well. Also, I'm rather dissapointed at the lack of Bruford questions I've received. I've received about 8 responses. There were some fairly useful ones in there. When suggesting questions, please avoid the drooling Yes/Crimson psycho-fan questions. :) You know what I mean, the "Why did you scratch your nose at the atlanta gig at exactly 8:34 p.m. on Monday, July 2nd 2:30 minutes into 'Sheltering Sky' whilst wandering towards the front of the stage?" type questions. :) Anil Prasad wcsanil at ccs dot carleton dot ca [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The views expressed in discipline are those of the individual authors only.
