While the thing is not perfect (sloppy editing, weird lighting, and you'd think people from the most technologically advanced country in the world would be able to focus a camera or hold the dang thing still), I still love it. It's great to see current Crimson up close, especially Robert. I was slack jawed with amazement, watching his fingers fluttering and dancing over the fretboard (especially during Frame by Frame). The guy is the greatest guitarist in the universe. Some questions--I have a tape of Robert on MTV back in the mid-80s and he's discussing music, musicianship, and being a turkey. There'z some magical Frippertronics in the background and I wonder if anyone knows what album they're from (if any). Also, as I recall, at the Berkeley Greek Theater concert of July 1996, there was a guy with a videocamera, right below the stage, taping the show. An usher came down, presumably to ask his intentions, and he seemed to have shown her some ID. And soon after that, he disappeared. Anyone know what was up with that? You know, it's really isolating to like Crimson. No one, I'm telling you no one I know has even heard of them, with the exception of my guitar teacher (but he doesn't listen to them). Perhaps I'm unfortunate in my acquaintances. Does anyone else out there share my angst? I know this sounds corny, but I really love this band. I was away on business and then followed that with a too-short vacation. So, I'll try to keep everyone updated on everything that's going on so far. First off, here's a list of all the submissions I've received: James Beard - "Frame By Frame" Brady/Studer - "VROOOM" Dificil Equilibrio - "Fracture", "The Great Deceiver", "LTIA pt. Concerning the copyright issue. I got a phone call a few weeks ago from Mr. Fripp himself (of course I wasn't home - go figure). Anyway, he mentioned that he talked to David Singleton about it, and it seems that all we have to do is pay 8.5% to the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society. So, I will be adding approx. 8.5% to the overall cost of the project, that way noone has to worry about it. But from what I gather, this is for this project ONLY, if you plan on using your pieces for your own CDs, etc. You probably have to find out for yourself what royalties you'll need to pay. Unfortunately I've been a lot busier than I expected to be, so I'm going to have to delegate some things to people, mostly within the people who have submitted. I'm one of those people who trys to do everything himself... I never learn... Anyway, some of the things that need to be discussed: Artwork - I've planned on having a "contest" of sorts as to what will be the album cover, and will most likely stick to that. But I got an e-mail from the person who does the postcards for DGM releases who expressed an interest in doing the artwork for this project. I will most likely keep it as a contest, and ask him to submit as well, hopefully putting art submissions on the ET Web if Dan has room. The thought of having a person who has done artwork for DGM doing the cover art for the tribute sounds rather intiquing. I will be e-mailing ET in the near future with the details. Layout - I may be able to do the layout myself, but if anyone has any expertise in this, I can send all the text your way when I'm done with it and you can work your magic. Mastering / Manufacturing - This is the section I'm going to leave up to you guys, as my knowledge of this is bordering on none. I realized that it's hard to make a price/quality comparison when you have nothing to go by. If it were up to me, I would probably just go to Discmakers as they are reliable and very quick, but they are also probably the most expensive. So, as some of you are a hell of a lot more knowledgable in this field and have dealt with companies... if you could get me reccomendations and rates, that would be greatly appreciated. I have a few of yours already, so I'll try to keep tabs. Funding: My grand scheme is/was to have this paid for before it even started. I was going to put a questionairre together to see how many people are interested and also try to get people to pay for theirs upfront, maybe getting donations from people who would be paid back after the CDs/tapes/? were sold. Hopefully this will work. My funds aren't as good as planned, thanks to a weather related car accident back in March or so, so hopefully this will run smoothly. "The Final Cut": I'm going to try and have the Philly listening group in December sometime. I have also gotten an e-mail from Jeffrey Weinberger of the E-Tape Website. He has asked if we can place all the submissions on his page, so that anyone from anywhere can vote on what makes the cut. While originally this sounded like a great idea, a few things popped into mind: Most importantly, E-Tape may be too good for this. The problem if we let all the submissions on E-Tape with the quality that Jeff has, then basically everyone can download all the submissions or just listen to it whenever they want to and there we will miss out on a chunk of sales. There are other things that are significantly less important, but this is the one problem that would worry me. If you have any thoughts/comments on this, please let me know. I've been putting off my response to Jeff because I took a lot of time thinking about the pros and cons, and right now the cons far outweight the pros. Right now I'm leaning towards not using E-Tape, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Anyway, I'm late enough getting this e-mail out to all of you, so I better end this and send it out before I think of another thousand or so things to bring up. This may sound kind of oxymoron-ish, but I expected that this project would get a lot more involved than I expected (anyone understand that?). Hopefully I can keep the project's delay to a minimum, but I will need help. I will try to get the questionairre and e-mail to ET out early next week. Well, that's hopefully all for now. My apologies to those who have already told me they are not submitting and are still on this e-mail list. I don't want to leave anyone out, so I figured I'd be safe and just stuff a few extra inboxes. Any questions/comments/insults/etc., please let me know. There are certain crimsonesque moments on BLS, mainly generated by Bozzio and Levin with a RED kind of drums+bass (reminds me of "One More Red Nightmare"). Being known as occasionally impatient, I sent the money to the UK for "The Night Watch" set and it arrived yesterday. Well, let me tell you...! I may have had my head in the sand here, but I found the enclosed booklet great, mindblowing at times. For instance, I for one had no idea that over twenty one minutes of the album "Starless & Bible Black" was taken from THIS concert , with studio overdubs. You know it's funny, a few years back after purchasing "The Great Deceiver" and seeing RF's notes that "...a slightly different version appears on S&BB" regarding the cut "We'll Let You Know", my assumption was that RF was playing a little joke on us, as it is almost identical at almost every crucial part. We'll blow me down...it is the same!! Did the rest of you ETers know this already!? I completely loved "The Night Watch"! Just kick back, Jack, it is the shit!!! The sound of the entire "TNW "set is outstanding, in my opinion. I for one would spend twice what I did for this recording. I completely agree, Robert, that this concert deserved to be heard (and thanks to you & David Singleton for the opportunity), and appreciated your additional comments, including that this is all that remains of the concert, that perhaps there was alot more, or the cuts were in a different order or even the concert opened with LTIA Part I but that no-one remembers, and that most of the audiences (and many musicians, managers & record copany execs) were drugged during this period! Hats off to you and the folks at DGM (a special "Thank You" to Diane for your time and all your courtesy) for a job well done, and congats on TNW success in Japan! I'll leave it to others to pick this one apart, as I am completely happy. As reiterated in a communication to me dated Nov. 7th, the offical US release is in January but is available now through DGM UK for 18 pounds (including US shipping) and it must be in pounds or credit card only! This is the version that Tower Records will slap up and will be selling as an 'Import' for $30.00! Last I heard, it will be available through DGM's US office in late Dec., though that will be the US copy. Their address is P.O. Box 5282 Beverly Hills, CA 90209-5282. She said she gave me that name so I was to remember that an audience's duty was to be receptive to the creativity of the performer, but I don't know much about that. Young Fripp: Music is the medium through which the musician transcends the constraints of mediocrity. Fripp: It's a funny thing what a young man recollects. Young Bill: You can set up your gear here if you want. Young Bill: Are you high or something? Young Fripp: My mama says musical integrity defies material necessity. Young Bill: My name is Bill Bruford. What's yours? Young Fripp: My name is Robert, Robert Fripp. Fripp Voice-over: From that day on, me and Bill were like peas and carrots. Just a quickie, to say thanks to all those who emailed me with advice as to which DGM CDs to buy from the Sometimes God Hides sampler. Last week I ordered and received Trey Gunn's The Third Star, and I'm glad I did. A fine album. He's fairly obviously Fripp/Crimso influenced in this album (look at the introductions to tracks 9 or 6 for example) but he has added a dimension of funkyness to it! I think my favourite track is no.9 (sorry I can't remember the names but their all fairly weird!), especially the two quiet mid-sections. The album shows off the tone and versatility of the Stick/Warr Guitar nicely, and the only track which I think will take a bit of getting used to is the final one Indiera. The vocals by female singer Serpentine are a little freaky to say the least! Anyway, many thanks again. Oh, by the way, I got a slip back with my fresh order form from Discipline, informing me of the fact that the two live 80s videos 'The Noise' and 'Three of a Perfect Pair - Live in Japan' have been re-released. Just another quick HALLO and a comment from the werking klass. In response to Jonathan Ewalds questions concerning Belews drumming, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Mr Belew in action at the Rosemont theatre outside of Chicago (pronounced shi-cah-go) when KC came thru last. He joined Mr Mastelotto and Mr Bruford on stage between the CGT set and KC's. Mr M and Mr Br played kettle drums on either side of Mr Bl while he wailed away on various small percussion instruments. It was a thrill! And rest assured, Adrian is more than capable. And do me a favor Jonathan. If you do spot any of the projeKt at a local watering hole contact me immediately! I believe its only an eight hour drive from Chicago to Nashville, and I have vacation time coming up. Better yet, send them Chicago way. After all, Adrian is an Illini boy at heart. Also, Tom Miles brings up an excellent point in overanalyzing RF. KC and RF is not simple pop nor will ever be. If rock music is to be considered an art form, then those that create must be considered artists. And those that revolutionize it, change it, turn it inside out and present us with something as moving as a child crying, and as terrifying as an elephant stampede, then that person must be considered a master. Give him his due. Analyze the music, but don't analyze RF's mood. After all we are all getting a little older, are we not allowed a little crankiness? And Tom, our contribution has been made to the Olive Branch. A nice mention for a great organization. One last thing. Anyone catch the voices heard on A Man, A City? Its track #5 on Epitaph. There seems to be a lot of chatter during the middle of the song. Is this band chatter or audience? Anyone? Anyone? If its the band, it would be great to hear exactly what is being spoken. Or maybe even roadies talking on about some female audience member. I dunno. Check it out and see what you think. Having taken up enough time and length, I bid ya'll farewell. One of these days we had a small ET gathering here in Moscow: Erik DePoy, an American currently living here, and myself. We've never met before. The setting was a concert of one of my favorite bands, Inna Zhelannaya (and friends). They list female vocals, 6-string fretless bass, drum kit and various, mostly ethnic, woodwinds, and play some threatingly intense and complex world music. I've sent their tapes to some of you -- it's different now. Their next CD will come out on Shanachie - keep an eye for it. Erik was very impressed, I think he didn't expect anything of that caliber. Anyway, the ET Moscow local chapter is now registered (thanks, Dan!) and you're welcome to join. But you'll have to show up! :) I've sent a post on October 31st alerting the list of new David Cross CD, and it never showed up in ET. Since few fellow ETers have wrote about this CD since, most of that post is obsolete now. I still want to share one observation regarding "Exiles" though (and I haven't heard it yet): I think it's quite remarkable that Cross and Wetton have chosen this very song for the tribute album. Because, in a way, aren't they the exiles from King Crimson? Different circumstances, but both had to go elsewhere, while both felt like staying. "Now, in this faraway land, strange that the palms of my hands should be damp with expectancy..." Most Crimson alumni must be feeling this way now; and especially while they approach the old band's material. I've been saying this before, but the idea of Fairport Convention's Cropredy-like Crimson all-lineups reunion keeps haunting me... Come one guys, no need to rehearse! Also, don't forget the ET IRC chats, 3pm EST on Sunday, 9pm EST Mondays, on the Undernet, #ElephantTalk. My nick on IRC is usually Mincer or TheMincer, and I usually hang out on the Undernet's #guitar channel, should anyone want to talk to a fellow KC fan. While I'm here...the neatest stuff I've gotten lately, which could possibly appeal to ETers: Bjork/Homogenic, Laika/Sounds of the Satellites, Flowchart/Cumulus Mood Twang, Stereolab/Dots and Loops, The Moog Cookbook/Plays the Classic Rock Hits, Jimi Hendrix/South Saturn Delta, Harmonia 76/Tracks & Traces, Portishead/Portishead, Mouse on Mars/Autoditacker, You've Got Foetus on Your Breath/Ache + Deaf. Homogenic and the Foetus reissues are especially dandy. First let me say that the following comments are delivered entirely with good humor from one amateur guitarist to another. If you don't know what a major third is, you should learn! A major third is the interval of three whole steps. (each fret is a half-step) Example, E and G# are a major third apart. G# and E are a minor sixth apart. Hope it helps. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 01:08:47 -0800 From: Michael Tanigawa Subject: gas cap legend I remember reading an item in a magazine (possibly Circus, before it went heavy metal) around 1974 which said that it was Wetton who lost his gas cap near (or in front of!) Fripp's house. I must have that issue somewhere in my parents' house. I'll try to find it when I go home this year. Mike Tanigawa ------------------------------ From: "Volguine, Maxim" Subject: "Guitar Craft" tuning Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 16:25:21 +0300 Does anybody have experience in "Guitar Craft" tuning (CGDAEG), i.e. which strings are best to use? I tried to tune the first string to G and got it broken ;-) (0.08 D'Addario on a guitar w/scale 648mm). Then, the 6th string must be tuned to lower C and it's too low for a common string - it sounds weak and bad. I hope someone could help me (I hate to play VROOM's arpeggios in common tuning). Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 14:05:41 -0000 Hi, You know its strange really, but despite following Mr. Fripp and KC for more years than I'd like to admit to, I have never actually met another KC fan! I occasionally get an " Oh yes, I've heard of them" but thats about it. So, imagine my delight at finding there are indeed other fans out there through this excellent forum...just thought I'd share my delight with you:-) Yours appreciatively, Dave Copley ------------------------------ From: "Reno J Faoro Jr." Subject: Hello from a hick from the sticks Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 08:00:03 -0600 Hello Crimso fans! I first listened to Court of the Crimson king in '69 in a small town in southern Iowa. We were told to bring poetry put to music to English class. I brought The Doors doing Celebration of Lizard from Absolutely Live and another boy brought In the Court... Believe it or not, we all razzed him for bringing it. Now 4 years later, I get turned on to Lizard and now I wish I could find that kid. He probably has a great collection. I'm really sorry I didn't listen to more of that song back then. I bet my life would have been different. But since then, in '78 I chauffeured Bad Company and got to visit with Boz Burrell after the show about Crimson. Then in '80 I met Fripp at a Frippertronic demo at Peaches record store in Dallas, and got to talk to him and get a picture and autograph. I can't find the picture, but I still have the autographed Exposure LP. Then a year later I gave Bill Bruford a T-shirt saying Texas Strangers at a Bruford concert, got to hang around Adrian Belew when he was being interviewed after a Talking Heads at the Dallas Agora Ballroom in '81. The same years I met Eddie Jobson at a Bruford show at the Bijou in Dallas. Then finally met John Wetton and got an informal interview and he autographed my Atoll CD "Rock Puzzle". And I got about a 20 minutes informal interview on video that day with him at Progfest '93 in Los Angeles. Well, that's my background in a nut shell with Crimson. I guess of all the famous prog bands, they are the only ones who I got to meet close up and actually to talk to a few of them. I also think that they are the most visual band, that doesn't need effects to keep my attention. Each musician is a marvel to watch perform. I also wrote to see if I could swap videos or sell or swap used Cds with other fans. I especially would like to see some older Crimson. I do have about 25 minutes of old Crimson. But I have a bunch of older and newer Prog bands to swap. Here's my lists and feel free to pass them on. Thank You for your time and hope to hear from any of the Crimson fans out there.
