BRUFORD INTERVIEW QUESTION REQUEST Crimson boots [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: lorne dot murphy at rose dot com (lorne murphy) Subject: NEW KING CRIMSON Date: 30 May 92 11:41:57 GMT Date Entered: 05-30-92 05:58 Taken from the Burlington Spectator, Burlington, Ontario. "KING CRIMSON MAY SOON REGROUP" By Len Righi Throughout the past quarter-century, both in and out of King Crimson, Robert Fripp has been one of the most adventurous electric guitarists to ever play the instrument. So when Fripp says he is concerned about whether he can find places to play now that he's decided to return to the guitar after a seven-year hiatus, he's got to be kidding, right? "I am not, not one bit", said the British guitarist in a recent interview. "There's been an entire generation of guitarists since Crimson last played and I wondered if, not having played for seven years, there would be any work for me", he said. During King Crimson's first run from 1969-1974, it earned a reputation as the most innovative of the British art-rock groups that included Yes, Genesis and Roxy music. The second reincarnation, which lasted 1981-85, stretched the envelope again, pioneering a cerebral kind of dance rock built on simplicity and discipline. Fripp said that he expects King Crimson to regroup for a third time, probably before the end of this year. Although he was stingy with the details, Fripp said, "I would like King Crimson to tour Japan next spring before doing anything else", like releasing a new disc. Fripp would not say who would be in the band -- "As usual, the lineup is always the same and always different" -- but he volunteered that drummer Bill Bruford, who currently is touring with Yes, would not. Guitarist-singer Adrian Belew seems a possibility -- Fripp played on a bill in Washington, DC, recently in support of his former Crimson cohort -- as is bassist Tony Levin, another Crimson alumnus currently on tour with Peter Gabriel and who could be available when the tour ends in a few months. Fripp also said that he recently spent two days in London with longtime associate Brian Eno recording a new album, Nerve Net. Fripp said the disc is a reworking of My Squelchy Life, which he recorded in one day about nine months ago but withdrew it before it was released. Trey Gunn, who also played on Nerve Net, described it as "hip-hop grooves and atonal wierdness with no drum machines and no MIDI (computerized sound machine)." Since 1985 Fripp has spent his time teaching a course called Guitar craft at workshops in the United States and more recently around the world. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Lorne Murphy --- RM 1.60: Usenet: Rose Media - Hamilton (416) 575-5363 [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 30 May 1992 14:18:18 GMT From: Jari M{kel{ Subject: To Discipline Read from Guitar Player May 92 Adrian Belew interview: With rumors circulating about a new Crimson album, the question on everyone's lips is: WIll Adrian return to his former post? "Robert and I have started a dialogue that so far has been terrific. Nothing is set in stone yet. We can't know if there will be a King Crimson until we play some music together. If we find that we have some great music for the 90's - and I think we do - then we'll probably do it. SO it's still a rumor, but seems like a pretty big possibility." I really got to appreciate Levin after King Crimson and Gabriel, and his presence on stage caught my eye. I began to find him everywhere, and it seemed that he was playing as many gigs in the Buffalo area (were I live) as the professional sports teams we have. Every few months he appeared with Frampton, Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, etc. and I decided it'd be fun to try and keep track of this. A few of my friends at the time I started this suggested that I also try to do a Phil Collins, David Sanborn, or even Steve Gadd list. Right... This has been fun for me, mostly because of the kind Internet people who have suggested CDs and albums which I would have never found. In fact, the CD which stands out for me is Steps Ahead's NYC. I was 50/50 about buying this when I found it, but the song "Stick Jam" on the label convienced me on the spot. NYC, after hearing all the Levin work (including Crimson) stands out as *the* Tony Levin CD for me. I know, I'll get X-amount of letters saying "what about Discipline?", but give NYC a listen. Levin dominates this CD like none other. Discipline is still be best "overall" CD for me tho. Without this list I would have never heard of NYC. I also ignore bootlegs, since there is no way of "officially" finding out if he appears or not. At least it's not too easy. A rule of thumb for boots though is that he toured with Gabriel each time (right?), 1981-84 Crimson, Robbie Robertson (including a "Saturday Night Live" appearance), Frampton in 1986, ABWH (*except* the video pay-per-view concert), and to make it easy, 99% of the rest of the list. (Ok, maybe not that high. How about 90%?) If anyone spots an error/missing CD/any other thing worth writing, please drop me a note. I'd appreciate it! Thanks for all the contributors over the past 3 years. You've done a great job! I usually give the US number, because that's the side of the pond I reside. If someone owns the European versions and would like to contribute their numbers that would be great. NOTES: *note 1 - On the back of the video, there is a picture of Cooper, along with a few members of his band from 1975. Featured is a bass player that looks like Levin, but is not bald. *note 2 - Birdy contains recycled versions of songs from Peter Gabriel (1980 and 1982) which feature Levin on bass and Stick. *note 3 - The Peter Gabriel CV is a collection of Gabriel's videos, *not* a "live in concert" video. Point of View is 85 minutes from Gabriel's 1986/87 "So" tour. *note 4 - Levin appears on the album only on the song "In Your Eyes", an extended version from the album So. *note 5 - This CD is a very small subset of the "Frame by Frame" box set, issued, according to Fripp, so "collectors would not have to wait" for this promotional CD to get into their hands. It contains edited tracks of 21st Century Schizoid Man, In the Court..., Elephant Talk, Heartbeat; full version of Matte Kudasai, The King Crimson Barbershop, and "medley", a 1:20 with many of the "trademark" riffs from over the years. I guess it's rare (or soon to be) so I included this note. So, in the same vein as the Belew request, I'd like to ask you all think up some brilliant, intriguing and intelligent questions for me to ask Mr. Bruford. As we all know, Bruford doesn't take kindly to simple questions. He likes a challenge, so let's give him one! I'll post a transcript after it's done.
