I orginally posted it to rec.music.gaffa in the middle of a "morality of bootlegs" flame war. Somebody (Chris Williams, I think) challenged me to post it to rec.music.gdead, which was no problem, since I'm a nethead, too. There is an excellent book out on Robert Fripp by Eric Tamm (he's written one about Eno, too). He breaks King Crimson down into four different phases or incarnations... King Crimson IV is the "Discipline" version (Fripp/Bruford/ Belew/Levin). I've started to see a certain disdain for King Crimson IV here, which they certainly don't deserve. KC IV wasn't "overrated." In 1986 they were the best performing rock band in the world. Phong T. Co writes: > There was an ad for the two video tapes (_The Noise_ and _Three of a Perfect > Pair_) in the liner notes of my LOCG Live! CD. However, I got it second > hand, and six years later. Does any one have these tapes? You betcha! _Frejus: The Noise_ is superb. This concert took place after _Discipline_ and before _Beat_. King Crimson opened for Roxy Music (portions of the Roxy Music performance can be seen on their compilation/rarities videotape). The sound is a little compressed, but still good VHS HiFi. "Waiting Man" shows the rock gamelan when it was still original, with inspired performances by Belew and Bruford. "The Sheltering Sky" is Fripp at his improvisational best, a far more authentic version than the one on _Discipline_. Highly recommended. _Three of a Perfect Pair: Live in Japan_ is very good. This concert takes place on the last, er, most recent :-) King Crimson tour. The sound quality is absolutely perfect. The show is very similar to the one that I saw at the Berkeley (CA) Greek Theatre during the same tour, with the notable omissions of "Red" and "The Sheltering Sky." The performances are up to par. Especially good are "Matte Kudasai," "Larks' Tongues in Aspic part II," "Sartori in Tangier" and "Industry." The creative differences that were destroying King Crimson IV are evident to the careful observer on this tape -- a certain "lack of commitment" on Bruford's part, Fripp's obsession with perfection, etc. Recommended. This doesn't have anything to do with Fripp, but it does pass through King Crimson by way of Greg Lake. I'd like to listen to some ELP (the original, with Palmer). What are good ones to start with? Preferably something a little different, but not TOO wierd. Thanks. Phong. -- ========================================================================= Phong T. Relph" Subject: New King Crimson Box Set (USA) >From Issue 54, September 1991, of the _ICE (International CD Exchange) Newsletter_: Caroline [Records USA] plans October 8 for [the release of] _The Essential King Crimson: Frame By Frame (1969- 1984)_, a four-CD retrospective box set on the English progressive rock group led by crafty guitarist Robert Fripp. All of the set's 45 tracks were remastered and many were remixed by Fripp, sometimes with new vocal or instrumental parts added. Fripp reportedly tapped into his own collection for photographs and information for the set's extensive 64-page color booklet. The first three CDs are studio recordings, with the fourth disc being comprised of previously unreleased live material dating back as far as 1969. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 3 Sep 91 23:30:25 PDT From: "John M. Relph" Subject: The Definitive Edition? I Think Not How disappointing. Those are the first words that come to mind when I listened to the newly re-released and remastered CDs of _Discipline_ and _Three of a Perfect Pair_. The reason I find them disappointing is because I prefer the original album mixes of "Sleepless" and "Matte Kudasai". (Are there other differences?) I believe these are the same remixes which were featured on "The Compact King Crimson". The remix of "Sleepless" lacks the driving beat and strange vocal processing which made the original mix interesting. The remix certainly does not leave me "Sleepless". And for some reason Herr Fripp decided to totally omit his guitar part in "Matte Kudasai". Actually, the song sounds good either way you play it, but I have always preferred the original in all its Frippery. It would appear that this newly remastered US CD of _Discipline_, on Caroline Records, is for all intents and purposes identical to its UK counterpart, released over a year ago (which I obtained as part of the Box Set). Except! Yes, except for three extra seconds of noise, apparently unintentional, at the end of the title track. Oh well, so now I end up with three different CDs of _Discipline_ and two of _Three of a Perfect Pair_ (and LPs of each as well). Next will be _Beat_, as soon as I find a copy. I am glad to have the original German CDs of _Discipline_ and _TOAPP_, even if the sound quality is markedly inferior to "The Definitive Edition" CDs. Time to go out and get the definitive _Let the Power Fall_ CD. And then... the New Box Set! Yes!
