Date: Fri, 10 Apr 92 12:25 CDT Well, I'm seeing Belew tonight (Friday, Apr 10) -- pretty excited. Belew AND Fripp together at shows? I think that sounds like one of the first "new" Crimson gigs....I'll believe it when I see the album with "King Crimson" on it. I could totally luck out this year with shows -- I've seen Marillion, I'm getting Genesis tickets tomorrow, I plan on seeing Fish (ex-Marillion), and maybe King Crimson?..now if Gabriel tours when he releases his album, I can die..... Speaking of New Crimson, what is it going to sound like? Belew's been on a big Beatle kick for the last two-three albums, at least. And who knows what Fripp will be up to. I'll try to get some sort of review up for Monday..I'm not a big expert on Belew's solo material -- I own the albums, but I might not recognize all of the tracks by name. King Crimson in '92! Belew at times sings like former boss David Byrne, but he takes many of his musical cues from "Sgt. Pepper"-era Lennon and McCartney. In constructing these homages, though, Belew hasn't troubled to make the borrowings his own. A lot of this material doesn't merely salute its sources; it apes them shamelessly. Songs like "Big Blue Sun" and "Only a Dream" are barely Belew's own, and add little to the legacy he's plundering." End quoted material* A tad bitter, eh??? I kinda like the album (although it's not the best Belew) Groove in Peace, ya'all! It was the second show of the tour. He played a number of songs from his last two albums, Young Lions, and Inner Revolution. He also played a couple Bears songs, which I'm not very familiar with, and a few solo "classics", like Lone Rhino and Momur (how do I spell that?). He played three Crimson songs -- Matte Kudasai, Heartbeat, and Elephant Talk. Those two were different from Crimson versions. The "medley" may have been described incorrectly here. It isn't, as I got the impression, a medley played by the band, but a mix from the original recordings. That's all the time I have, but it is definitely worth checking out if you can... What song does everybody out there think contains Robert Fripp's best guitar work? I know he's given us a lot of memorable sounds, both with KC and on his own, but a piece that I find particularly striking is his work on David Bowie's "Fashion." His guitar sound is so haunting! And it goes with the song so very well. Any comments? Toby -------------- Date: Thu, 9 Apr 92 15:31:47 PDT From: Sven To: jamesb at nevada dot edu Subject: some tab King Crimson -- Frame by Frame This is the 7/8 guitar part that Belew plays during the singing: ----------------!----------------!-- ----------------!---------------! ----------2-----!----------2-----!-- ----------2-----!---------2-----! --2---4-----4---!--2---4-----4---!- etc...--2---4-----4---!--2---4----4---! ----4---4-----4-!----4---4-----4-!-- ----3---3-----3-!----3---3----3-! ----------------!----------------!---- ----------------!---------------! ----------------!----------------!- ----------------!---------------! ----------------!----------------!----------------! ----------2-----!----------2-----!----------5-----! --2---4-----4---!--2---4-----4---!--5---7-----7---! repeat the same pattern ----2---2-----2-!----2---2-----2-!----7---7-----7-! at the 5th fret. ----------------!----------------!----------------! The fripp line on top of the belew 7/8 is basically the same riff in alternating bars of 6 and 7, but KEEPING THE SAME 8th note value. This produces the funky intervals you hear... and you thought it was a delay! (I know *I* did first time I heard it... 8-)). ------------------|---------------| ------------2-----|----------2----| --2---4-------4---|--2---4--------| ----2---2-------2-|----2---2---2--| ------------------|---------------| etc. over the 7/8 above... ------------------|---------------| The chording during fripps' wacked out picking in the intro and between verses seems to be a barred 9th chord, dropping the unison on the G string to the major 7th, ie --2-----2--2----| --4-----3--4----| --4-----4--4----| --2-----2--2----| with appropriate whammy bar antics for the first chord, then up to a Dsus2 (5th & 7th fretts) then again another 3rd. Oh yeah, when the 13/8 and 7/8 fall back together, they play for about 3 bars both in 7 *then* drop the bass note as noted above. Some one is yet to figure out the "wacked out fripp part".
