I wonder if this was intentional? [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1992 20:03:40 EST From: Mark Crimson Friedman Subject: Another Belew comment on the new King Crimson I ran across a Belew interview in a local music rag. Included in it is the following (abridged) text: ----- [...Have you set any new goals?] "...I'm considering whether or not I'll be a part of King Crimson if there is a King Crimson in the 90s..." [It's surprising that you bring up King Crimson; is it really a possibility for the 90s?] "It's a rumor at this point. But we are talking about it, Robert Fripp and I. If we can work it out, we do have some music we want to do. It may happen. At this point, I would say it's a good possibility. I visited Robert over the summer and we've talked on the phone a few times. But the fact is, at this point we are both busy all the way until sometime this summer. So we really can't get together and see musically what there is to share between us, and until then we really can't make a decision." ----- One possible gig for a 90s King Crimson would be the _Neuromancer_ movie soundtrack, as they were originally offered in the late 80s, since William Gibson now has the rights back in his possession. I had heard >that all three albums (Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair) were >all record pretty much at the same time; that King Crimson went into the >studio for a few months and recorded 30 to 40 songs, and then sat down and >said, "okay, let's put these songs on this album and release it now, and >put these songs on this other album and release it a next year," etc... >Does anyone know if this is true? I'm sure this is just some rumor and not true. I can't prove anything, but I can offer the following observations: During the tour to support the Discipline lp there was not an abundance of material for the band to play. They repeated Thela Hun Ginjeet in the encores and did two "covers" of older songs, Red and Larks Tongues Part II. They did an instrumental that mutated severely when words were added later during the Beat recording sessions. I think if they'd had more material they would have performed it. The Discipline tour shows were much shorter than the next two tours. I've heard outtakes and some of the process of "the making of" 3 of a Perfect Pair. They worked repeatedly on some of the material at various tempos and all of the music was circa 3 of a Perfect Pair, not a mix of material from all 3 lps. Now you might argue that they recorded the 3 lps in different sessions but around the same time, but I really doubt it. You could probably call Bearsville Studios in Woodstock,NY and confirm the actual dates they were there recording 3oPP. Btw, the tensions during these sessions was somewhat obvious in that they did about 20 versions of sleepless at various tempos and it appeared it took a long time for things to fall into place. At one point Fripp seemed to be having a hard time getting Bruford to play exactly what he wanted and had Bill repeatedly work on and change the drumming part. At another point Fripp said "what's that smoke?" and someone (belew?) said "It's *only* a cigarette, Bob" as if smoking a cigarette in the studio was ok but that Bob had thought it was something else (a joint? an amp?). - malcolm at wrs dot com [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: mjgiles@ucdavis \(\).edu \(\) (\) (Mentor \(Jason Giles\)) Date: Mon, 6 Apr 92 00:11:28 -0700 Subject: Adrian I was simply writing to tell all the people(if there are any) in the Sacramento and San Francisco area who get the list that A. While I knew Belew was going to tour, I was completely blown away by the fact that Fripp was going to join him... From the size of both guitarists pictures, it looks like this is going to be a joint tour, and maybe a joint show... Any one out there in NETLAND know anything I don't??? BTW: the California Guitar Trio is listed as "Special Guests" (ie. the openning act) Please let me know if any of you know anything about this possible joint show. For other DC area Crimso fans, this is located on page 45 of the new _City Paper_ (10 April 1992)....
