And *****YES****** I did get the scoop on the new King Crimson. I don't have time to transcribe the interview right now and won't for at least a couple of weeks unfortunately (and my deadline at the mag isn't for a month anyway). But I'll try and remember the real goodies: 1. Adrian is totally unsure about his involvement with the new Crimson. He's been speaking to Fripp off and on since last summer about it, but he's not sure if he wants to trade off his burgeoning solo career for a long commitment to Crimson. He says if he's positive the band can make some vital music, he'll seriously consider it. But he's not going to make a decision about it until after his solo tour (more on that later). 2. Jerry Marotta *IS* the new drummer. The way Adrian spoke of King Crimson, he implied that there *will* be a new King Crimson album by year's end, it's just that he's unsure if he will be a part of it. He told me why Bruford wasn't going to be involved, but he said this "has to be totally off the record". I finally nudged him into revealing the answer and it has nothing to do with Bruford's involvement in Earthworks and Yes. Nothing! Send me private e-mail and I'll fill you in. I'm not posting this in a public forum. 3. Belew said he always loved "Cadence & Cascade" and that Robert was just looking for a new sound on the track. When they talked about a new Crimson last year, Adrian flew down to Robert's place and layed down a new vocal. He says it's that simple. Harumph. 4. Bears! Bears! Bears! Chris Arduser plays on Inner Revolution as you all know. But *ROB FETTERS* from the Bears will be co-guitarist on Adrian's upcoming tour!!!! Yeah! And yes, he'll have a live bassist this time around! He'll be doing stuff from every album except Twang Bar King. Including one Crimson number (Elephant Talk or Heartbeat he says) and a 4 minute medley of over **35** pieces from every point in his career! I love it! This should be hilarious. And yes, he'll do Big Electric Cat. 5. He says he didn't tinker with tracks on Desire Of The Rhino King! The reason the bassline is different on Big Electric Cat is because of a mastering error! 6. Adrian got divorced over the last two years and has fallen deeply in love with a woman named Martha Thompson who coined the term "Inner Revolution". Most of the album's postive tunes are about her, You can guess who "War In The GUlf Between Us" is dedicated to though. 7. That mexican band he's been producing is a progressive rock band that cites King Crimson as their biggest influence!! I can't remember the name. But the album is complete and is being released on BMG/Ariola come.. err.. damn, I forgott. Late summer I think. I've missed truckloads of info here. I hope you can wait a few weeks to see the interview verbatim. Bye for now.. I heard a rumor once, maybe someone can confirm it, or deny it. I had heard that all three albums (Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair) were all record pretty much at the same time; that King Crimson went into the studio for a few months and recorded 30 to 40 songs, and then sat down and said, "okay, let's put these songs on this album and release it now, and put these songs on this other album and release it a next year," etc... Does anyone know if this is true? -paul pmartz at dsd dot es dot com Evans & Sutherland [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1992 11:21:48 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Patrick Arnold Subject: Re: the "Beat" debate (Was Re: Thela Hun Ginjeet) Well, In Discipline #30, Merlin sez: >I hear that Bruford and Belew thought that Beat was much >better than Discipline, while Fripp much preferred Discipline... That may have been true at one time, but in 1990, Belew listed his Desert Island Discs for Tower Records' Pulse magazine, and the only KC on it was "Discipline". I think that when the egos were in full swing around the time of the recordings, they may have had strong opinions, but in my opinion, only "Discipline" transcends the players and the period. Which isn't to say I don't like Beat or 3ofaPP!, it's just that they're "great" compared to "wow" (and then compared to live in 1981, "whoa"). - Brian [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The views expressed in discipline are those of the individual authors only.
