Give Fripp's apparent life-long aversion to all things 'showbiz', does anyone else see the contradiction here? As much as I may have many years of profound appreciation of his work, this sort of prima-donna attitude seems to fly in the face of his stated wishes to avoid the trappings of the type of fame he despises. Frankly, if backstage passes were dished out with this sort of proviso (assuming it is *his* proviso, that is) I doubt if I'd have accepted them, whether I wished to approach him or otherwise. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Dickson, Black Cat Software Factory, Scotland : Fax 0131-653-6124 crimson at blackcat dot demon dot co dot uk : Columnated Ruins Domino *------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Nov 1996 23:35:33 GMT From: crimson at blackcat dot demon dot co dot uk (Mike Dickson) Subject: King Crimson Notes And Queries In the absense of a Really Thorough FAQ for this mailing list - and possibly as a basis for the future of such a document - how about we propose any deep and meaningful questions about King Crimson to each other in an attempt to solve the greater mysteries beyond the music. Of course, this is all just a ruse because I have a few questions which have been bugging me for the last twenty years of my Crimsocentric listening, but what the hell - if anyone can offer aanswers to the list then so much the better. 1. Why would someone with the appreciation that Fripp has for the warts-and-all 'live situation' agree to the release of 'USA' complete with a myriad overdubs? 2. By the same token, are there any overdubs on 'Starless and Bible Black'? (There appear to be two or more guitars playing on 'Fracture' at several points where a violin/viola plays on 'The Great Deceiver') 3. On the coda to 'Islands' with the orchestra tuning up for 'Prelude', is there any viable reason for the three beeps that occur during the tuning session or is it someone far more innocuous like a recording level test? 4. Has anyone worked out the lyrics to 'The Mincer'? 5. Who is playing what instrument on 'Trio'? The guitar sounds like it is *probably* Wetton and the Mellotron Fripp, but I may be wrong here. Any answers or other questions for the occasional series are welcomed. *------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Dickson, Black Cat Software Factory, Scotland : Fax 0131-653-6124 crimson at blackcat dot demon dot co dot uk : Columnated Ruins Domino *------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 96 08:04:29 EST From: c62op27 at ibx dot com (Victor Fiorillo) Subject: KC Video - Where is Fripp's hand in all of this? Well, I received the KC video today. Much to my dismay, this thing is horrible. Sure, the music is the same repetitive genius that I heard 4 times on the Thrak and Thrakattak tour, but I was hoping for something indicative of Fripp's perfectionism. This video hardly makes the grade. I would be embarrassed to release anything like this. Having purchased Mike Pinder's CD ROM "Mellotron Archives" for my EMU Esi-32 sampler I was surprised at some of the presets. These are all stock sounds taken directly from the original tapes of the orignal machines of several different models, the M-400, the Mark II and the M-300. There are the usual "Strawberry Fields" flutes, the string and brass sounds that everybody used, and a few surprises. One preset labeled "Cha Cha: Swinging Flutes" has the crazy schizophrenic flute phrases heard at the end of the aforementioned "Strawberry Fields". The only difference is the Beatles played it backwards. Another preset has the exact opening Spanish guitar riff heard at the beginning of "Bungalow Bill" All a Beatle had to do was play one note and the entire intro was played for him by the Mellotron! All my life I thought that George Harrison played that lick! More astounding is the patch called "Bossa Nova: Cello and Violin Chords". On the left half of the keyboard is a rhythm accompaniment by a real rhythm section playing a Bossa Nova in different keys. Spread out over the right hand side of the keyboard are separate string phrases meant to be inserted as fills into the accompaniment. As I was playing the different phrases I kept thinking, "hmm, these sure do sound familiar, I know it sounds Crimsoney, but from what?" I then realized that it was the opening section of "Vroom Vroom". Fripp has taken a few of the phrases, and arranged them into a seamless performance. Each phrase is played back by holding down one key and is approximately :07 to :10 long. I experimented for awhile a got a pretty close version of what he did, although without consulting the recording I couldn't get it exactly. Other variants on this theme are the Cha Cha with flutes, a Fox Trot with sax phrases, and a truly wacky Dixieland with Trombone phrases. The CD-ROM is great, it's like having 4 or 5 perfectly working Mellotrons plus a Chamberlain at home. And it stays in tune!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 1996 16:32:07 -0500 (EST) From: Christie Subject: Video (not that one!) Hi Everybody, Well, thanks to the almighty Bruce down South (and Bruce, if you want my firstborn or the rest of my XTC collection, just say the word), I am now the happy possessor of a terrific Crimson compilation that includes The Noise in Frejus, France, an '80's Cow Palace performance, the music video for Sleepless, current Crimson's performance on Conan O'Brien, an '80's performance on Friday's TV show and some very amusing clips of Crimson in the '70's. Since I don't yet have the new Live in Japan video, I guess I'll give you all my thoughts on what I have. The Frejus show is very good. It's only about 45 minutes long, but unlike the ToaPP Live in Japan video, it isn't plagued with video-y effects. It is plagued with the Extreme Close-Up syndrome, though. The performance is quite excellent, with a beautiful rendition of Waiting Man as the opener. And Robert's all dressed up, in a tuxedo and looks a cross between George Will and my high school sweetheart in his senior portrait. I do have to admit a preference for the ToaPP concert, though, mostly due to Robert's jaw dropping performance on Sartori. Nothing I've seen or heard has ever come close to that. The Cow Palace performance is also very good. The only distractions were the gratuitous shots of very '80's looking women contorting themselves for the camera. What is this, Life Begins at the Hop?? My favorite overall was the Friday's show. Not only was the performance red hot (Thela Hun Ginjeet was excellent), but it must have been a very early performance because Robert actually looked happy to be there. He smiles! Yes, big, toothy grins that in no way can be misconstrued as grimaces or indigestion! Manna from heaven, indeed. It was like seeing Mr. Spock smile. Come to think of it, Robert would make a very excellent Vulcan. He even looks a bit like Leonard Nimoy, circa Mission: Impossible here. The performance on Conan O'Brien was excellent, mostly in that you could really observe the evolution of the band, from the '80's era. I saw them at the July Greek Theater show, but since it was nighttime, the lighting was odder, and my seat was so close to the front, I couldn't really get the perspective on the entire group dynamics. Anyway, back to Conan...Robert didn't look very comfortable on stage, in full light, like a specimen under glass. For some reason I am reminded of Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now. (Representation of evil incarnate, unmasked? No...but I can't explain it...) Tony looks exactly the same as 11 years ago. His stage presense is the same. I don't mean to say he hasn't advanced or evolved as a musician. But he seemed exactly the same. The eternal rock, the eternal return that is Tony Levin. And the Sleepless video. I'm not much of a music video person (and the only other Crimson video I've seen is Heartbeat. Are there more?), but I couldn't help liking this one. Kind of silly at times, it was still pretty entertaining. Better than the cheesy singles bar atmosphere of Heartbeat anyway. Adrian looked nice, with that curl of hair coming down over his forehead and Bill looked like he had a slight Brian Setzer thing going (am I hair obsessed or what?). Even Robert mugs it up for the camera--he grimaces and gives pained and/or mysterious looks. God, I love it! I must close with a comment on an old thread. I keep seeing the recurrence of the "Is Adrian Belew any good for Crimson or what?" discussion in this here space. I am baffled by the existence of such a notion. I must confess to being thoroughly charmed by Adrian--his gamboling energy and wicked, string bending noise making. I notice that it seems like most everyone prefers the Bruford/Wetton/Fripp lineup overall, or at least prefer it to '80's Crimson (not that I've conducted any polls). I realize that the B/W/F lineup might be "better" in some sense of the word, and when things worked, they REALLY worked (like in the Great Deceiver box set). But I like the '80s group a lot better and I'll tell you why. I feel excluded from the Larks/Starless/Red music. It's very beautiful in its classical symmetry and perfection, but it feels very remote and cold to me. It's like seeing Mt. Everest in the distance--extreme, breathtaking beauty, but a coldness and an extreme measure of distance that prevents it from drawing me into it. I don't like the '80's lineup just because of AB (he can bee a little too poppy at times, even for me), but he's sure part of it. He closes the gap, makes the music more accessible (and not just because of his poppy nature). Anyone else feel the same way? And I would love to see a box set of live '80s Crimson. Sorry for the length. Christie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 1996 16:17:41 -0500 From: Jason Bell <106417 dot 737 at compuserve dot com> Subject: The 80's Era Swap/Stick Chatting. Mel Collins played alto/soprano sax and flute in both concerts. Quite a man. Probably he was the most talented instrumentalists during the concert, adding depth to Clannad's dream-like Celtic ambience. Hair tied at the back, Mel Collins appeared in most of the songs they played. He stood in the right-center, inbetween the keyboard player and the drummer. Although his solos were limited, they really were excellent solos, neither bothering the fundamental sound and structure of Clannad nor making Mel Collins look like just a session musician. He was just right. He was especially appealing to me when he played the flute. An exceptional musician! It was the first time for me to witness Mel Collins, and it did bring me back old memories about the KC during the time he played. ************************************************** Tomoyuki Ohsawa Entertainment Business Development Department Sony Corporation ************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Dec 1996 09:33:03 +0900 From: ohsawa at csg dot sony dot co dot jp (Tomoyuki Ohsawa) Subject: Ian McDonald and John Wetton with Steve Hackett Hi, Steve Hackett is giving concerts in Japan: Dec 16, 17 in Tokyo, 19th in Osaka and 20th in Nagoya. I tabbed it to help myself figure it all out, because it makes for a good ice breaker at the beginning of a jam session with the band. it's probably also a good one for auditioning a guitarist... see how he can compare to fripp :) the bass side is run through a slapback echo... pick a tempo and be sure to keep in time with that rhythm to keep it as tight as possible. warr guitarists would probably wanna use the bridge bass pickup and neck melody pickup. this is tabbed for warr/grand stick, just because i'm used to that. 10 stringers can just ignore the 6th and 12th strings, nothing is played on them anyway. these first 2 lines are played in free time, using a volume pedal for swells. vib. vib. ============================================================ ------------7-----------------7----------------------------- ---------10-7----------------------------------------------- --8-10-7-------------8-10-7--------------------------------- ----------------------------8-5----------------------------- *------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================ *--------------------------------------------7-5-7-3--------- ----------------------10------10-7-10-5-7-3----------------- ----------12-8---12-8----12-8------------------------------- --13-12-8------8-------------------------------------------- *------------------------------------------------------------ this is followed by part A once. OK, so the sharpness of the picture is not the strong point of the video; Adrian at times appears to be a ghostly image, while Trey Gunn is often out of focus. But let me say this: IT'S A VIDEO. It is meant to represent a performance of Crimson in Japan. In no way will you get a perfect duplication of this or any performance. If I saw a crystal clear image of the band, I would get the sence that something is awry. Just listen to THE GREAT DECIEVER box set, it is anything but crystal clear, but that is the beauty of it. I saw Crimson four times over the past tour, and the only one in which I actually got a clear view of the band was in Hershey, PA during the HORDE tour. Because of the lighting in the arenas, it is almost impossible to get a perfect image of the band; they are on a black backdrop with thousands of watts of light being shot at them. So I will watch the Japan video, and try my best to put aside the visual distractions and instead concentrate on the music - for THAT is where King Crimson shines. Matthews' guitar playing doesn't sound much like Fripp to me :-), but he's a solid player and an excellent songwriter. Their drummer, Carter Beauford, however, is a jazz-man at heart, and I love his playing for many of the same reasons that I love Bruford's playing. -==-John R. Afterwards someone approached him with a camera: RF: Did you take that picture of me while I was playing? BLOKE: No, that was someone else.... RF: Well, if you find him, spit on his foot. It seemed to me that Robert was just pretending to be the way we think he is for a bit of a laugh. Anyway, with the soundcapes still playing and everyone walking around with crimson vinyl it seemed for just a few wonderful moments that the lunatics had taken over the asylum. ------------------------------ Date: 05 Dec 96 15:50:49 EST From: Michael Peters <100041 dot 247 at CompuServe dot COM> Subject: BB on new NationalHealth Bruford plays drums on a new collection of unreleased National Health recordings. The server will be . Meet us in channel <#ArtistShop>. For more details, come to The Artist Shop . BTW, we now have the new King Crimson video "Live in Japan." The sound on this is absolutely incredible, mixed by Adrian himself. It's in HiFi stereo, but even without a stereo VCR, it sounded pretty damn good to me when I cranked it through my stereo. Almost felt like I was back at the show. This video was filmed in Japan, not by the band, but by and for TV broadcast in Japan. So what you see is exactly what the Japanese TV viewers saw. Admittedly they did some artsy stuff visually that some people aren't going to like. Personally I did like it. And quite frankly if this were a bootleg video, people would be scrambling over each other to get it and pay outrageous bucks for it. And then they would be commenting about how good it looked for a bootleg :-) But it's not a bootleg and is actually being sold at an extremely reasonable price. As it's the only official Crimson video currently on the market, you'll definitely want to check this out! It was recorded at the Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo in October of '95. The visuals are very artsy. The sound was specially remixed for this release by Adrian Belew and it sounds great. I plugged it into my stereo from my VCR and really cranked it! Speaking of Adrian, don't forget that we have a live chat with him this Tuesday night, December 10, at 10pm eastern time. All the details are on the IRC page of The Artist Shop at . Adrian will be giving away an autographed copy of his new album, Op Zop Too Wah, as well as taking your questions on his solo career, Crimson, et. al. Mike Keneally and his band, Beer for Dolphins, have a new double CD out called 'Half Alive in Hollywood' on Immune Records. Mike & Beer for Dolphins are now on tour opening for Steve Vai. You'll find the tour schedule on our bulletin board. I'll be seeing them this Thursday in Cleveland! Also on Immune is guitarist Lyle Workman's album, 'Purple Passages.' Lyle has recorded and performed with Todd Rundgren, Jellyfish, Frank Black, Tony Williams and Burgeois Tagg. Definitely something for you to check out. Hope to see you at the chat! I had the pleasure of seeing the boys 3 times in the past year or so, twice in Chicago and one massive show at the Starwood in Nashville. Fripp even stood the whole time, he even spoke to the crowd through Adrian's mic, never have I heard a word from the Frippster in concert. The Nashville show was the best one yet, except I've heard that KC did 21st Cen.......man in Europe, what a drag...... Please Mr. Belew sir, I met you once in Chicago at the Bizmarck, and talked to you in Nashville, the security guard that got you was cool man, you were very nice to myself and my friends from Chicago, and all I wanted to say was thanx for being a cool brother, and thanx for remembering your younger fans(19-22). I don't know if this past paragraph will ever reach Adrian, but I had to thank the homies. Later...........aw....Later. Are 1999, Blessing of Tears, or Radiophonics available on record? Would anybody know how I could go about getting some? How is it that Fripp comes to work with so many other musicians? I guess this is a question about musical professionals in general, that is, how do two people who don't know each other decide to work together? Like why has Fripp teamed up with FSOL, the Orb, NoMan, the Roches, and all of those people? Do they just call him and spend the money to fly him on over to their studio? Saw Kazumi Watanabe's _The Spice of Life_ with Bill Bruford in the sale rack at the local music store: can anyone recommend this album? Most importantly: As I was flying back to college this summer, Delta managed to lose one of my bags somehow, and in the bag were 110 of my CDs. (I kid you not.) Among them were a number of KC and KC-related albums. So I am wondering if anyone out there has any albums that they are looking to sell or trade: I'm looking for Lizard, Red, Discipline, Thrak, ThrakAttak, B'Boom, Exposure, all of the Fripp soundscapes albums, Giles/Giles/Fripp, The First Day, Show of Hands, Earthworks, One Thousand Years, and League of Gentlemen (God Save). For you, maybe this phrases heard like: "GGGGLLL", "UKA UKA WAWAN K=F3,...", "BLUKE BLUKE...". In this Carnival lands, is an excentric thing heard a instrumental music. However, Brazil got very good instrumental musicians, principally drums and various types of guitars. Never King Crimson plays in Brazil. Only Tony Levin, one time, becames with Peter Gabriel, and I,=20 near the front door of the club, I see one stick & no hair and I said: "H= e must be Tony!" My brother, in Buenos Aires, view and talk a few minutes with Mr Robert Fripp. And Pablo Grasso, very friend of mine, saw The Craft Guitarists in Rosario. King Crimson became in my life since 10 years ago, in my 14 years of squelky life. I'm 25 years old,=20 and Like Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno & Frank Zappa, King Crimson shocks me very much in this years (and now too!).=20 Now, the Internet and other magic word connections=20 make possible a primary knowledge with our worlds. Our expectative was big in this area. So, I never stay ungry with King Crimson if the Japan Videos color are poor, or if the lp cover are small and empty or without letters. Ha! Long time ago, the KC LP's edittion in Argentina were much fair without letters, without cover sheets, without anything... oh, no! It was there ALL there... IN THE MUSIC! And me and my friends must learn to "catch" any pure message "smell in the air" to the songs, to make comprehensive for us. It was a miracle for me to record! >>>> Well, after this sentimental introduction, here is some questions that I wish to expose to KC, after 10 years to learn in darkness : 1- The instances of the structures, wrotes by Robert Fripp in "Let the Power Fall", was applicated for me in some=20 development programmer projects. I can reproduce them, but some problem: in this structure, where stay our concept=20 of "error" or "mistake" ? 2- What was your experiences in Argentina ?=20 First, with the feedback (or not) with the people, second,=20 with music experience (if you got something experiencie=20 with argentine rock and Tango culture). 3- What your purpose to join "neurotic line of songs" and "pure ensemble songs" ? Examples: a) XXI sch man -- Talk to the Wind b) Cat food -- Cadence and Cascade c) Bboom -- Thrack d) The begin of Neurotica e) Indiscipline -- The Sheltering Sky I need this explanation in words, to compare with my leasoning's experience. 4- What happened with Gilles brothers, and where are Pete Sinfield? Bill Forth is the guitarist/songwriter behind TEN SECONDS, a terrific industrial, "cyber-rock" act that features Robert Fripp all over its debut, self-titled CD. The album also features ex-Jethro Tull member Mark Craney on percussion, and Ministry drummer Bill Rieflin. This interview features a wide variety of discussion, including: - The making of Ten Seconds from start to finish - Bill Forth's musical evolution - Robert Fripp's involvement, including some hilarious road stories and insightful comment from Forth about his approach to life and music. (Forth once served as Fripp's road manager) - Pat Mastelotto's involvement in King Crimson - The inner workings of Discipline Global Mobile records - Life as a UFO critic and advertising guru - His work with Arnold Scharzenegger (seriously!!) And plenty more. Even if you're not familiar with Forth, you'll almost certainly find this interview interesting. Not only will you find out about Forth, but you'll glean a lot of useful and interesting knowledge about Robert Fripp, King Crimson, Bill Rieflin, Pat Mastelotto, Mark Craney and the record industry in general. ~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~ Anil Prasad innerviews at pobox dot com ~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~ INNERVIEWS: Your link to exclusive interviews and CD reviews featuring the world's most interesting and innovative musicians! http://pobox.com/~innerviews (Netscape 3.0 enhanced) New interviews: Victor Wooten, Ten Seconds, Alain Caron (ex-Uzeb) Coming soon: Tony Levin, Michel Cusson and Gary Willis ~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~ ------------------------------ From: Matt Walsh Subject: ET Crimson Covers Date: Tue, 10 Dec 96 11:09:00 PST Hello, This may have been brought up before, but it just crossed my mind and I thought I'd bring it up. I have seen talk on here sporadically about Crimson "tribute" albums, and it got me to thinking. Considering most Crimson fans seem to be musicians themselves, and hopefully spanning a diverse set of music, I was thinking if it would be possible for ET members in bands themselves to make our own tribute demo/album/... I don't know how much of a legal hassle this would be, or if anyone would be willing to donate the time neccessary to do this, but I think it would be great if some of the ET members were to "pay their respect" on recording as much as we have on this mailing list. I personally am probably a little further out musically from the norm on this list, as I am the lead vocalist of a "metal" band. We have been discussing possibly adding another cover to our setlist (we only do 1 at the moment), and I am a person always wanting to do something different, and I think we could do something interesting with a KC song. I think it's funny, because my guitarist doesn't listen to KC at all, and he seems like he is influenced by Fripp by some of the things that he writes and the way he plays. So, just thought I'd bring this up in case there was any interest. Please let me know if anyone is interested in persuing this idea. Oh, and to the person that mentioned scratching "Elephant Talk" and "Frame By Frame" from the "current" setlist. I couldn't disagree with you more. I think "Frame By Frame" is the most improved song with the double trio and was upset when they didn't play it at Philly last time. My jaw dropped to the floor after hearing that song live the first time. ET is one of my favorites as well. While "Red" is one of favorite KC songs, I have to admit that it probably should go, it seems to be missing something when they play it, though I have no idea what "it" is. We all have our own opinions, just thought I'd blabber mine.
