Uses, B-sides and Tributes Hello RedHeads-- First off, in "semi-relationship" to Matt Nolan's post in #317 about Crimso music in TV commercials. I believe I heard the first couple of measures of the mellotron opening to "VROOOM VROOOM" in a U.S. commercial for some sort of shampoo. I've seen this a couple of times and it has to be from "VROOOM VROOOM" otherwise it would not seem so obvious to me, as you can only hear it for a couple of seconds at the start of it. (This was probably mentioned long before but I also recall hearing the instrumental intro to "Inner Garden I" on Leeza Gibbon's talk show about a year and a half ago, during a program about multiple personalities. Also, "One Time" was used as the musical intro on the mediocre, banal and insipid Channel One Newscast that is piped daily to subscribing high schools around the nation. And, although I was never able to confirm this, they also used something that sounded suspiciosly like the live "B'Boom" drum-interlude. But, enough about that.) Secondly, what were the B-sides to Crimson's early singles ("Epitaph", "In The Court...", "The Night Watch", etc.)? Would these be non-LP B-sides? Also, what is contained on the AAA sampler? I think I have everything Crimson ever commercially made available (including the "Sleepless" 12-incher) and if there is anything on these that are unavailable elsewhere, I'd like to know so I can go about acquiring them. (Is the soundscape on the "Dinosaur" CD single really from "B'Boom" just with an alternate title?) Lastly, if there is anyone who can help me get in touch with anyone affiliated with any of the rumored KC tribute albums, it would greatly be appreciated. It is smeared out. Just like 3rd generation copy. Maybee it is a cheap NTSC to PAL conversion. 2) It all seems to be done with limited budget. 3) I can not comment on the sound quality as I don't have a Hi-Fi Video, but the normal sound channel is as good as one can expect from VHS. 4) Some backstage clips or interviews would have made this video more valuable. The musicians are a little distant/cold. 5) It is a must for collectors and for those who can't get there. 6) We all know the music, no surprises here. Ron ------------------------------ Date: 20 Nov 96 22:25:31 -0500 From: Greg Bastug Subject: REVIEW: Live in Japan video I received the Live in Japan video last week (actually, its the Japanese import laserdisc), and have mixed feelings about it. On the positive side, the performance is quite powerful - the band rarely misses a step, and the dynamics capture so many more nuances than will ever be heard in the brute volume of actually being at the concert. VROOOM VROOOM, Sex..., Red VROOOM, B'BOOM, and THRAK are especially overwhelming. What's dissapointing is the video - it seems there was a contientious effort to create an unsettling, jagged feel to the video, which means we get to see a lot of quick cuts and hand-held/zooming/vibrating motions (vrooom vrooom, I guess); "artfully" unfocused shots; and video f/x consisting primarily of color oversaturation (attempting to the convey the feeling of a video painting, I suppose). These effects are exacerbated by the fact the KC did not modify it's often dark, shadowy stage lighting in deference to the practical needs of taping the shows. So in addition to the "purposeful" effects, many shots in the production are severely grainy and dark simply because theres not enough light. Who knows... maybe the style of editing and post production was chosen to mask less than technically stellar raw footage. I also have the Sylvian/Fripp Live in Japan laserdisc, which offers far better video quality, even with a dark and stark setting and a share of unconventional video f/x. I think Sylvian/Fripp succeeds through its subtlety, while KC Live in Japan falters for trying to make the video as muscular and relentless as the music. Instead of complimenting the music, the video interferes with your enjoyment. On a different note: though everyone's playback system will be different (and assuming you use of some type of home theater), here are some tips that helped the video look and sound better: - Lower the color control on your monitor. That will help lessen the intentions a little. - Do use a more-than-stereo-only playback mode (Dolby Pro Logic, or some Rock, Jazz or Theater mode) to enhance the sound, but bypass your center channel if you use one. I found the stereo image collapsed when using it, and the vocals were too pronounced. - Try EQ'ing the treble down a bit - as good as the audio is, I thought it was a bit to thin. I look forward to other reviews...and to a new video from the 1996 tour, WITH 21CSM and WITHOUT video pyrotechnics. Greg PS. I vote for the temporary tour retirement of Elephant Talk and Frame by Frame, and the ressurection of Satori in Tangier's and Discipline. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 16:42:13 +1100 From: james dot dignan at stonebow dot otago dot ac dot nz (James Dignan) Subject: Re: Tyres and deodorant >After lending Thrak to a friend, he is convinced that SSEDD (intro and >'chaos' section) was used >for a TV advert here in the UK last year. I recently got the everything by KC from Discipline on, plus some old RF, FRSQ, and LCG. I like them very much and am hungry for more; Is there more of material from these artists that is available to fans without ripping off the musicians? I'm looking for more and would like some guidance from the more experienced out there... I admit to being a bit lost in pure Frippertronics (I need a bit more structure) and in the raw sounds like THRAK, but I am still drawn to much of the unconventional work he and those around him have done. I am inclined to like the work that has complex and strange rhythms (Frame by Frame, Waiting Man, Thela Hun Gingeet, Three of a Perfect Pair, Eye of the Needle, Askesis, Bicycling to Afghaniztan, Intergalactic Boogie etc.), melodies which may be characterized by some discord, and the melding of some these attributes with something less unconventional- sometimes almost clicheic (ie the funk of Elephant Talk and People, the pop of Heartbeat and Sleepless, the raw wonk of Larks Tongues I,II, and III)- to make some really unusual compositions which also have something familiar for the listener to hold onto while enjoying the foray into the new ground. Any suggestions for me? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Nov 1996 13:51:41 +0100 (MET) From: stalker at bart dot nl (christian mogul) Subject: Mr. Levin and Mr. Gunn, pleeeease! The Soundscape genre is my cup of tea (one of them). I enjoy the soundscapes of various musicians and I was glad to see (and hear) that Mr. Fripp is also into soundscapes. He has produced many CDs and though it might seam that soundscape musicians can produce 10 CDs a day, sometimes the quantity is also important, you find on one CD some 10 minutes that you really like (if you're lucky, the whole CD is on your taste and then, buy it! Otherwise, just lend it.) Mr. Fripp's soundscapes occupy a space of a certain volume (how else can I talk about it?) but after a while I get tired of this rather limited sound hue and I'd like to hear some soundscapes performed by Mr. Levin and Mr. Gunn. (KC live in Japan) Someone has complained about the "out of focus" video recording of the KC live and asked for opinions. I don't think words can change someone's taste but here it's mine : I think this is the first real KC video presentation! I find it brilliant in all visual aspects, as if a great film director was guiding the cameramen and editing panel. The out of focus, blurred, trembling and less usual framing (though slightly reminding of MTV) are, the way I see them, "telling" something. It looks that the video has something to say as important as the music. Well done boyz! And to say the video is out of focus sounds to me as saying that most Picasso's portraits don't look like human beings. The thing I dislike about this video, and I have said that before in Elephant Talk and also wrote to DGM, is the miserable quality of the tape or recording on the tape. There is also no electric guitar version recorded." Martin Elliott: "Some years back, I think 1984, I did a gig with the MNB at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London where the drummer Michael Giles joined us for Water Dances, so I expect he is the man we are looking for. Just for the record, we've also played this piece with a drummer in Tokyo; his name is Yukihiro Takahashi, and he is a very famous drummer in Japan, having played with the Sadistic Mica Band and Ruichi Sakamoto as well as his own projects. Yep, some of it is indeed "out of focus" and there are moments when you wonder what high school students created this video "art", but in general it's a hell of a lot better than most stodgy lifeless concert videos. It was clearly done "on purpose" and a lot of it worked. I'd take a high school student over most production teams any day. The camera editing is really incredible, giving timely close-ups of KC's crashes, washes, swirls, and b'booms. Listen to it with a good stero or using headphones for a better idea of what I mean. The use of focus and diffusion adds a lot of warmth and dimension to the presentation of the performance. I would have done without the occasional jittering camera and MTV-style camera-flitting about the stage, but hey...it's King Crimson on video, man! Speaking of which, this concert video does a good job of capturing the band's performance around summer/fall 1995, of which I saw five shows. This 105 minutes of music is performed well, mixed very well, and the video has many great moments capturing the torrent of music that spewed forth. A great video of a hot date, indeed. Yum. I dig it. - Brian ------------------------------ From: "karen minder" Subject: KC at horde Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 20:51:12 -0600 Hello there. I am new at this email thing so here goes...
