My copy of _Beat_ has a song called "Neurotica". I can only assume that the copies owned by the album's detractors (and even its less enthusiastic supporters) is missing this track. Oh, yeah -- :-). But not really. :-) I consider "Neurotica" to be one of the artistic peaks of the 80's lineup - a tour de force for everyone involved. To see and hear it played live was one of my favorite musical experiences to date. p.s. Belew's new album, _Inner Revolution_, strikes me as a logical continuation of the quirky pop song-craft he practiced with the Bears and later as a solo artist (especially on _Mr. Music Head_). I liked it more on first hearing than I did _Young Lions_ which I haven't yet really grown to enjoy that much. While writing the "Discipline" album, Adrian wired himself for sound with an expensive tape recorder and took to the streets of New York. I read this story in an otherwise very silly book about songwriting and bought the "Discipline" album because of it. While we're on the subject, does the song title mean anything? Something that makes me nervous about the new Crimso is that, aside from the substitution of Marotta for Bruford (if this is true), this seems to be a rehash of the last KC lineup. I LOVED the Discipline lineup, of course, but one of the fundamental attributes of King Crimson seems to be their capacity to undergo ridiculously extensive lineup changes between (sets of) albums and emerge with something which is somehow consistent with what has gone before. I'd rather see the group try something a little more new this time than to get hooked on one particular lineup - no matter how talented that lineup is. And, just to add fuel to the fire about the "Beat" debate - I hear that Bruford and Belew thought that Beat was much better than Discipline, while Fripp much preferred Discipline. (And a personal opinion: I've noticed a couple put-downs of "Larks Tongues in Aspic, Part III" in the last couple of issues. Well, I absolutely adore that track from start to finish. That and "Sleepless" are the twin gems of that album. Please feel free to write and (dis)agree.) I heard a different explanation, which seems more believable to me. This is that Belew was walking the streets of Brixton, with a little Sony recording walkman, making some spoken notes, when he was hassled by some guys. Later, in the studio, he told Fripp et al the story, and Fripp surreptitiously recorded Belew, which is what we hear on the track. "Thela Hun Ginjeet" is an anagram of "Heat in the jungle" Toby [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1992 03:39 EST From: Ed Lovell Subject: Earthworks in Mansfield, Pa. on 3/16 I caught Earthworks at Mansfield Univ. last night (3/16). Wow. I showed up 2 hours early to make sure to get a good seat and was surprised when there were only 20 or 30 people waiting outside the door 15 minutes before the show (which was *free*, BTW!!). Steadman Theater is well designed and holds about 500, thought it was only roughly half full. Seemed to be mainly music students, which is why I believe he chose Mansfield. Bill was very witty. At one point, when introducing a song (the encore, I believe) he said, "this song is about the red-light district of Paris, where grey-haired men in long trench coats do unspeakable things with rubber ferrets." The audience was rolling. He made no mention of recording the show, but I'm glad he recorded others. It was truly an awesome experience. Bill obviously enjoys playing Jazz, and I dare say he's more proficient at it than he is at rock. His unique mix of classic Jazz style (including brushes on occasion), polyrhythms, and diverse sounds are by far unmatched. Although I had no intentions on listening or watching anyone but Bill himself, his incredibly talented band demanded at least some of my attention. Each solo was remarkable (especially the E-flat horn), but I wish Bill would have taken more than 3 minutes. I truly enjoyed the acoustic bass and sax. I wish the show would have surpassed the 2 hour mark, but unfortunately it lasted a mere 1:45 (according to my watch, anyway...sure seemed like 20 minutes): If you have the chance, GO SEE EARTHWORKS! If not, buy the live album if/when it is released (and their studio albums for that matter). Crossposted to the Yes Newsletter, Notes From the Edge where there were other reviews of the show. Let me know if you'd like the set list and/or other tour dates. #&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&# Ed Lovell \ ERL at CRNLNS dot BITNET Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory / ERL%CRNLNS dot BITNET at CORNELLC dot CIT dot CORNELL dot EDU Cornell University \ ORQ: "A lifetime of questions..." #&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&# [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The views expressed in discipline are those of the individual authors only.
