It is quite obvious that Thrak is NOT in 3, it is in 5/8...kinda. The November 1995 issue of Modern Drummer contains a large article on Pat and Bill and includes a special section on Thrak, including a simplified written part...The band begins in 5/8, but then Bill and Trey superimpose 7/8 over the existing pattern of Pat and Robert (the other guys are in there somewhere!). The article distinctly names the 5/8 as being phrased 3-2 and the 7/8 phrased as 3-2-2. The 5/8 is played four times for the whole band, then Trey and Bill enter 7/8 for 10 bars over 14 bars of 5/8 held down by Pat and Robert then the song is back to its original 5/8...Repeat this, and then improv! Ripped off... You may want to make a note on the tour dates about the Horde stops. KC played the first spot in a 4 band Main Stage lineup. And we missed it! Drove 3 hours and $65 to my first KC gig, and maybe my last possible one, and KC had played for just one hour, at 5pm. Nowhere can you find Horde lineup times info, or is it clear that Blues Traveler is the headline act, so many people might assume, like I did, that KC isn't buried in the early hours of the festival. The concerts started at 4:30 and only went to 11. The Horde homepage is at http://www.philipsmedia.com/horde but that doesn't list play times either. I wonder how KC went over, as the crowd was decidedly of the young, summer vacation, get stoned, any excuse for a party type. Rusted Root and Lenny Kravitz were on after KC, and Blues Traveler went last as the headliner. There were also 2nd stage bands, like Me'Shell Ndeguecello. We only caught Kravitz, Me'Shell and Blues T. Kravitz blew BT away. BT seems to be forcing their songs into a sped-up concert mode that doesn't work. I'm wondering too if his present group is Wild Colonials as stated in the news, or MASQUE as stated on his solo album "Mistaken Identity" (it's really a terrific CD, burning of ideas hip-hop/jazz/funk/ and even with some hommage to Frippertronics recorded in a rock quarry). Let us hear reviews if someone has seen him live. Anyway the reason of my post is to testify Fripp's appreciation for this underrated black guitarist. During an interview held at the end of 1992 for the Italian magazine TUTTO CHITARRA, Fripp spoke so about his friendship with Reid : "I met Vernon from the Living Colour band. He's a very talented guy and very nice. He confessed me to have deeply studied my style at the beginning of his guitar carrier : anyway now he's got a superb phrasing, and truly original licks with no traces of my influence. And to be sincere he is one of my favorite guitar players. In the same way I was a great fan of Hendrix, anyway I didn't try to sound like him." And when asked what were his favorite CDs of that period he answered : "Many different kinds, in these last days I listened to Bartok's string quartets, Gamelan of Giava, Blue by Joni Mitchell and LIVING COLOUR. But I don't like too much listening to records, I prefer concerts, live music" And here comes the connection to the Beatles, that some Eters pointed as a major influence to "Thrak"... Fripp said : "For me the only true album in rock history is Beatles's Sergent Pepper : the only album in which the recording IS the performance. For this reason is the only record which satisfies me as a studio product." If you add to his opinion also Belew's deep love for Beatles melodies, you'll see clearly that is not a mistake finding Beatles traces in Thrak. Actually "Walking on air" and even "Dinosaur" are Beatles heritages genially morphed in the nineties. Of course DEBATES, DISCUSSIONS, BABBLE, BURBLE and BROUHAHA on this subject are welcomed. In ET 294 Todd W. Crane asked informations about the term "SOTTO VOCE" in the Belew's lyrics of "Inner garden II" from Thrak. Those are Italian words, meaning "in a low voice", or "whispering, mourmuring" but it is also a musical term derived from classical music (like Adagio, or Presto all coming from the Italian language) indicating an expression for players who should caress very gently their instruments in a special passage of the score. Thus, my standards are probably not up to the refined level of those seasoned concertgoers -- but here's the St. Louis show. I arrived early, so I got to watch/listen soundcheck. The first thing that struck me was that Bruford has changed his set, so it seemed. The two toms that were over the bass drum weren't there. It looked like he had one on either side of the set, and the standard plethora of pads, but seemed otherwise normal. The show "started" with a Fripp soundscape over the PA. I say "started" as it wasn't the official opening, but it was definitely KC. Then, some wannabe hippy type mounted the stage, and announced Crimson. Bill and Pat walked out front and proceeded to play a Taiko style duet on gong bass drums, speeding up, and I believe falling out of synch on only 3 notes. Now, for a brief set list - and comments where I made them. 1. Thela Hun Ginjeet - great, very airy.. Adrian's triggered vocals were kind of a let down, but it didn't bother me like I thought it would. 2. Red - POWERFUL (as always). Seemed a tad slower, and the usage of dynamics was very evident. More dynamic, in fact, than I've ever seen them. 3. Dinosaur - very heavy, very ominous. Suprised me, I thought it was kind of light on the records, but it was truly a strong song. Trey really impressed me on this song. Adrian's singing was top notch, very bell-like in tone, and crystal clear. Tony was playing an upright bass on Adrian's guitar synth part, and it really added to the song. 4. Matte Kudesai - nice, mellow, like it should be. Not really impressive, IMO. 5. Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream - started out pretty mellow, much more so than on B'Boom, IMO. When Adrian begun the line "private velvet animal...", Pat did an open/close slur pattern on the hi-hats that really strengthened the section. Trey, again, was INCREDIBLY strong, he *REALLY* impressed me how POWERFUL his playing was. 6. Soundscape/B'Boom/Thrak/THRaKaTTaK part I/End Theme from Thrak - Fripp was incredibly intense. He didn't drop out until Bill's snare pattern, and his chords got angrier and more powerful as he got closer to the end of the 'scape intro. During Thrak, the electronics were insane in Bill's set, and Fripp was incredibly loud. Basically, it was Thrak as it should be. During THRaKaTTaK/Improv, Fripp was using his "Dinosaur" guitar solo sound, and Adrian was making a kind of "laugh" noise with his guitar. Once he seemed to realize what it sounded like, he repeated that noise over and over again, and made it more "mocking", if anything. End theme of thrak, well, we've all heard it. Nothing ground breaking. 7. VROOOM - quoting my notes, "ho hum (yes, really)". Vrooom. Not groundbreaking, not lame. Just Vrooom. Before Elephant Talk, however, the guy who was drunk and next to me continued saying, "OK, you're DONE now!! They sound like the f***ing devil!" The devil remark, of course, made me smile widely. 8. Elephant Talk - Elephant Talk, as we know and love it. Insane, out of control, yet always strongly controlled. 9. Indiscipline - Started off with triplet patterns between Pat and Bill. When the verse kicked in, Pat played a very poppy backbeat thing synching up with Bill. Tony really seemed to be having fun on this one, I mean, *REALLY* seemed to be having fun. Trey brought in a new kind of countermelody to the Indiscipline theme after Adrian said "I wish you were here... etc.", and then the Crimson set ended with a HUGE "I LIKE IT!!!" from Adrian. It was a spectacular show. Waiting for more Crimson in St. Louis, MO (We love you here! HORDE was just the wrong crowd for KC (said in the hopes that Tony or someone sees this)), -Tim Read ------------------------------ Subject: KC in KC Date: Sat, 10 Aug 96 14:04:11 CDT From: Buck_Mahoney at kfn dot org (Buck Mahoney) Organization: Kearney Free-Net Aug. 8. King Crimson with HORDE at the Sandstone Amphitheatre. King Crimson was excellent, but the set was too short and the remainder of the program too long. Selections were the same as last summer's THRAK tour, so no Schizoid Man or Sheltering Sky, but who's complaining? Probably the band members, who were without a sheltering sky and had to deal face to face with a cruel sun. Why did they have the "old" guys go on first, in the hottest part of the day? It was a health hazard. Bruford started with a bright yellow t-shirt that was a sweat-soaked dark yellow by the end of the program. Levin was pouring water over his head, trying to keep cool. Pat and Robert looked a little bedraggled by the end, having worn two layers of clothes. Bruford also wore sunglasses, which he lost by the end of Red. Despite the heat, the band performed with energy and enthusiasm. It was a professional performance, well-received by its fans, and probably ignored by the rest. Too bad. They don't know what they're missing. Being first, KC performed in front of a small audience and people without reserved tickets were invited up front in the reserved section to fill in the gaps. We did. As a semi-professional photographer, I reluctantly followed Fripp's prime directive and left my camera in the car. Then, I noticed Levin taking pictures of the audience during Pat and Bill's opening drum duet. Needless to say, I waved and acted stupid. --- OffRoad 1.9e unregistered ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 17:18:57 -0600 From: dominic at MO dot NET (Dominic Schaeffer) Subject: Crimson in St. Louis 8/9/96 KC at Riverport Amphitheatre 8/9/96 Finally the Crimson King plays my hometown! The first time since the "Beat" tour in the '80s, the band that has on more than one occasion restored my faith in music is playing here in St. Louis! What?- They're playig FIRST? At 5:00? Oh my... We arrived at the site at 4, were in our seats at 4:15 after purchasing 2 ten ounce bottles of water for $7 and making our way through a sparce group of the new young hippie wannabes... The main tent was EMPTY. Despite the fact that the whole scene could have been taken from the movie "This is Spinal Tap" (the amusement park tour section), Bill and Pat came out and started things off with the brilliant drum duo they did in Chicago at show #100. When the rest of the band took the stage in my enthusiasm I yelled a heartfelt and sincere "Welcome Home, Adrian!" to Mr. Belew (Bellville, IL, I believe) and just as the words left my mouth I realised just how pathetic a welcome this town had given... but I digress. After VROOM and RED, Belew introduced the band and cordially invited people to stick around for the other fine acts that were on the line-up for todays festivities! (ouch!) But y'know something, people? The level of intimacy was incredible! It was such a treat to have six of the most influential artists on the planet placed directly in front of us and enjoying themselves doing what they love and live for! The Crimson King took us to Heaven! Even the stragglers that had no idea who KC were dropped what they were smoking and "went there" with the band!! Twenty minutes into the 55 minute set I looked around and the tent area had come to be about half full, and it's a big tent! The set list consisted mostly of the 80's material with the exception of RED, DINOSAUR, B'BOOM, SEX SLEEP EAT DRINK DREAM and Fripps Soundscapes. The improv section THRAK was phenominal and lasted a solid ten minutes. Wow! Belew did the "drill on the pickups" bit, too. It was funny! Hoping to hear 21st CSM, TALKING DRUM and LTIA II but alas... Also, Fripp had played some riffs in there that I hadn't heard before. A new line from Fripp is always a treat and there were quite a few today! I like to think that they are the seeds of new Crimson songs being planted in fertile soil! Like i said earlier- Heaven! Maybe the whole point of doing the H.O.R.D.E. Fest is to open new minds to the music that's out there along with being economically easier for the bands on the tour. With that in mind I hope KC is introduced to a whole new audiance of enthusiastic Crimheads that the band so rightly deserves. The show ended at 5:55 to a standing ovation and i'm sure that if they had a song that was shorter than 5 minutes they would have played an encore! They seemed to enjoy themselves very much and given the circumstances it was a wonderful experience for all. This is self-serving of me, but here goes.... please play St. Louis again soon guys, ok?? hehehehee PLEASE????? Well there you have it! thanks KC for all your wonderful works! (and Toby, thank you for yours!) On Saturday 10 August KC played a 1 hour set at the HORDE festival in Nashville Tennessee (according to my wife's watch it was only btwn 52-56 min though). Set list (furiously scribbled down by me--so I'll apologize in advance for the lack of a proper title for the 1st piece): 1. Drums 2. Thela Hun Ginjeet 3. Red 4. Dinosaur 5. One Time 6. B'Boom 7. Thrak>Improv>Thrak 8. Waiting Man 9. Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream 10. Elephant Talk 11. Lark's Tongue In Aspic, Part II Brief review by song: Drums: Bill and Pat began the set by playing matching large concert toms in the front of their drum risers. Very good performance that seemed to combine some tribal and marching influences and lasted for a few minutes. I've seen the name *Prism* attached to a similar piece that featured Adrian as well in some of the gig reviews. Thela...: Well done as usual. The tape loop of Adrian talking was used. Red: Tony's bass was mixed quite prominently in the piece (quite a bit more than on B'Boom). Dinosaur: Excellent rendition featuring a bow solo by Tony on his Steinberger upright as well as some tasty licks on the Warr guitar by Trey. One Time: A good rendition that did not seem to depart much from the studio version. B'Boom: The soundscapes intro by Robert was more aggressive and muscular than when I saw them in November 1995--it reminded my of the soundscapes on *Radiophonics*. For the first bit of the drum solo Bill played his snare with the snares off to good effect. Overall an excellent version that was a bit more aggressive than on *B'Boom*. Thrak>Improv>Thrak: A real suprise here as I did not think they would improv much with only a 1 hour set. They did and Trey was right in his post a while back that the current thraking blows away what was caught on *ThrakAttak*. This one caught them in top form w/an improv that went out into space and came back right on cue. Almost seemed rehearsed they were playing so well together. The improv featured among other things Adrian's drill solo. Waiting Man: Saw Bill and Pat playing the intro on Bill's Simmons pads and some great Stick and Warr guitar work from Tony and Trey. Sex...: Like *One Time* a pretty faithfull but good rendition. Elephant Talk: This one even got the people in the audience who were waiting for the other acts singing along (note: I wasn't singing). Lark's Tongue...: Words will fall short on this one. A very "Thrakified" version w/some great work by Robert (along with everyone else). A great way to end the set...the only problem: there was no encore and when the last note died out you wanted more. Some general comments: The use of such positive adjectives above is not by design...they were simply in top form and had only 2 obvious technical problems. The first occurred in *Thela* an appeared to be a problem with BB's high hat--it looked like in the open position it was open too much or there was a problem w/the pedal & stand. The second occurred a little later and Adrian switched guitars w/out missing a beat--unknown what prompted switch so it may not have been a technical problem. Although much of the audience was not there for KC many got into the band at some point and overall were well behaved--nothing was thrown at the stage, etc. One last note on the set, we were sitting to the left of the soundboard and Crimson's sound was amazing. After the set was over my wife and I were walking around the festival and met Bill Bruford (Bill if you read this I was the guy who rather excitedly said "Mr. Bruford"--thanks for stopping to chat) and Trey Gunn (Trey if you read this thanks for everything) at different times. Both were exceptionally nice and took time out of their schedule to talk with some fans. From a personal perspective it really made the show. Thanks for a great show and wonderful evening. Happy listening (& viewing). Paul Gelpi ...oh what a lucky fan he was (OK so its sort of ELP) ------------------------------ Date: 96-08-12 02:35:33 EDT From: cross at connectnet dot com (Corey Ross) Subject: San Diego review I waited a few day's to see if anyone was going to write a gig review for the San Diego show but I guess I'm it!!! Being that I've onle seen Crimson twice ( the first was the San Diego show one year prior to this one )I don't know how qualified I am about giving such a review. To start off the venue was great ( first time I had seen a concert at Hospitality Point, nice outdoor setting behind Sea World ) The band opened up with a song I hadn't heard before possibly off one of the three eighties albums!?!? I did not write down all of the songs but highlights include... a great version of Dinosaur, that middle section is phanominal live!!! The improv in Thrak was huge!!! I have Thrak Attack and I felt that this improv blew them all away, probly the live feeling of being there didn't hurt either.. Of course the big song of the night was Twentieth Century Schizoid Man, that song live is way too powerfull!!! But what really topped off the whole night was durring the first ancore ( Larks Tongue in Aspic II ) at around 10:10 Sea World has a fireworks show every summer night, and when I was facing the stage the fireworks were over my right shoulder, it was simply amazing!!! The band had the best view of the fireworks show and I could tell that this inspired them just a little bit. All in all the sound was excellent as well. Being a drummer myself i noticed Bill and Pat had different kits than before. Although Pat's kit was just a different color, Bill had a whole new arangement!?!? Same yellow drums, but the hi-hat is now in the center of the kit in front of the snare drum and bass drum, also the elecronics and toms are all at an even horizontal height. I'm not sure why the switch, but it definitly did not hinder his playng what so ever. The show featured a lot of drumming a well!! B'boom was played great..amazing snare work by Bruford!! The beginning of the whole concert featured Bill and Pat doing a drum solo before the first song was played. And again before the first ancore Adrian, Bill, and Pat did what I think is being referred to on the net page as "the Prizim" they all play a drum solo!! All I have to say is that this was the best concert experience I had ever been to!! ------------------------------ End of Elephant-Talk Digest #297 ********************************
