The Greek Theatre is a large open air ampitheatre in Griffith Park. The acoustics were great (better than the Albert Hall) and we could hear everything. Trey Gunn was a bit quiet (or was Tony Levin too loud ) but BB and RF were right up in the mix. The gig itself was a reasonably straight B'Boom tour playlist but with a couple of MAJOR exceptions - see if you can spot them in the playlist The stage line up was different - Pat Mastelotto Bob Fripp (seated on stool) Bill Bruford Trey Gunn Adrian Belew Tony Levin BTW Bob Fripp stood up and played once !!!!! The following playlist was given to me one of the (very kind and forgiving - crawl crawl) stage crew..... The bracketted stuff was added by me Elevens Thela (Hun Jingeet) Red Neurotica ***** One Time Frame (by Frame) (Twenty First Century) Schizoid Man ***** Waiting Man Vroom Vroom B'Boom Thrak Sheltering Sky ***** Three of a Perfect (Pair) Sex (Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream) Elephant Talk Indiscipline ***** Prism Dinosaur ***** Vroom Well what can I say. No Talking Drum (as done in London) but they did it - they did Schizoid Man. Wow - wow - jibber jibber. The gig was performed immaculately. Trey and Tony were doing stuff which should be impossible. One comment heard on leaving was "I'm going home to chainsaw my bass". Message to Tony Levin - PLEASE email me and let me know HOW you get those drumsticks to work !!! I mean drumsticks on your fingers - too wild. There was a bit in the gig (I think it was "Prism" - but I'm not sure) with BB, AB and TG bashing the hell out of two huge floor toms and a set of drum pads. I managed to watch it through binoculars (I was in the nose bleed section of the theatre) and the timing of it was AMAZING. Three guys going ape and no stick clashes. It was a bit like the drumming on the beginning of the live video tape I have (Annie Nightingale introduced it when they played on the Roxy Tour) except much much better. Finally my thanks go to the guy from Caltech sitting next to me and Dave for lending us his binoculars. Without them it would still have been great but we woudlnb't have jibbered as much... Thanks KC for a great gig. For some reason, I have found that any time the subject of sound quality comes up, somebody on the list either scoffs or gets mad. In particular, the subjects of recording quality, manufacturing quality (in the case of gold CDs), or hardware quality (in the case of the musical reproduction system: ie, your stereo) seem to piss people off: apparently, some people think that this simply doesn't matter (or fail to believe it could). As an example, someone recently posted........ >-On Gold CD's > Much debate has been wasted over the sonic qualities of the >Sylvian/Fripp collabaration "Damage". I was moved to purchase the CD >myself and see if I could detect any noticeable improvement in warmth or >presence. To my astonishment, I discovered that not only did the CD >change the warmth of sound and bass response, but that the gold >particles also changed the pitch, register, chord structure, rhythm and >timbre of the music itself. > I have taken to painting all my CD's with Gold paint, and can >recommend the technique to anyone wishing a truly unique sound >experience. This kind of attitude assumes 1) sound quality doesn't matter, and any differences are illusory 2) any point of view to the contrary is "obviously wrong" and laughable. As for the first assumption, I would challenge ET readers to take something like Damage or Thrak (but not the 80s recordings) to a high-end audio dealer and hear what a high-quality reproduction system can do--it is a shock and a real thrill--try to listen to brands like Krell, Wilson, Spectral, Mark Levinson, or some high-quality tubed gear like Audio Research (but don't bother looking at the prices). If we insist on (or at least are aware of) high quality music like KC, it seems reasonable for us to spend our energy and dollars in such a way that high-quality recording and manufacturing are encouraged. As for the second assumption, let me say that I will not reiterate the excellent discussions on Gold CDs and the mastering process that have gone on here at ET. The sarcasm in the above-posters' message seems to imply the only difference between the electromagnetic surface properties of gold and aluminum are color! As an optical/electrical engineer, I know that even if this were true it could be enough of a difference to be audible (or at least worthy of consideration as a factor in sound quality). My point in bringing this up is not to reiterate the whole gold CD issue, but to reserve a place for those who might want to post about sound quality issues (I'd like to hear about that KLIPSCHORNs guy's rig). If a thread's going to die, let it die a natural death (of boredom), rather than having some ears-of-clay meathead club it to death 'cause knows nothing about it. -Emory. ------------------------------ From: Matthew Nolan Date: Tue, 16 Jul 96 10:53:12 BST Subject: 21st CSM + Top of the Pops It was mentioned in ET #289 >But what happens if it gets on Top of the Pops? Nightmare maybe, but imagine the implications. Take That, Boyzone et al would never get a look in again. The mass pop music audience would have been educated in the ways of originality and use of talent. The worrying thing is, if a couple of over-influential publications such as Smash Hits, Just Seventeen, even Cosmopolitan all started to say that "intelligent music" was "in" and that it's cool to look below the glossy veneer for the substance beneath then that would be it. Just point the teenage girl populus in the direction of a few real bands and... ...ok so maybe I'm dreaming, but some education is sadly lacking and the "Music Industry" takes advantage big time. Back to Schizoid Man, listening to the older live recordings is a great insight into the evolution of the song (and the band). Different dynamics come accross, and as for the guitar and sax solos - what can I say !? I wish I'd been born many years earlier. I think it's been said before but I too feel that it's a shame that there is no current live version. I hope there will be eventually - taken from the current tour, the Sheperds Bush performance was stunning. Even the bar staff were getting into it. Mark ------------------------------ From: max dot bracco at iol dot it Date: Thu, 08 Aug 96 19:31:45 Subject: The Creative Process according to... Mr. Fripp In recent ET I've read a lot of noise about music creative process. Many of the view expressed were quite interesting, but let's hear what is Mr. Fripp's opinion. He gave me this definition during an interview for an Italian music magazine called TUTTO CHITARRA at the end of '92 "Usually people think that are the musicians who create the music, but in fact is music who creates the musicians. My view of true progress is when a new idea is absolutely necessary. If people ask me why Guitar Craft tuning is C-G-D-A-E-G , I can't give a precise reason ; because it wasn't me who choose it, but it came naturally as a need for writing a particular song. It was September 1983, and standard tuning suddenly seemed inappropriate to me..... .... the creative act is an eternal moment, out of common time, not sequential. Our expectations are based on the past and actually are constituing the present. Future leans back to create the present, which is heading to the future. It's a strange concept to be told with words, but a creative artist has a clear perception of future leaning back to the present" This is only part of the Frippian philosophy, and you can believe it or not or, if you prefer, just enjoy its effects while being skeptical (as appears to do Bruford). Anyway, anyone who have ever tried to play an instrument in a band (also amatorial, but passionate) has experienced some strange timewarp or emotional thrill in catching musical ideas from nowhere : some twilight zone that rarely opens its doors to let us in. After that you probably wonder "how the hell have I played this theme, or how could I invent on the spot such a pretty line ?" And this often really trascends your conscious technical skill. Great musicians have the gift to reach this feeling very often (but not always when they play) ; amateurs maybe only happen to taste it once in a lifetime, but it's a thrill really worthwhile. BTW, in that occasion RF also mentioned his intention of opening his guitar to a seventh string. Does anyone know if he has adopted this new instrument in the meantime ? Personally, I first learned of KC from my younger sister (we were in our later teens at the time; I'm now 26), who picked up 3oaPP & The Compact KC - I believe because she knew of Adrian Belew, it must've been around when "Mr. Musichead" came out. Anyhow: as yet I have only heard LTIA & Red, and most of ItCotCK since most of it is on The Compact KC (and why does the CD version have only that from the 70's? why not "Red" & "Cat Food" as well, as on the cassette?). I like LTIA & Red is growing on me, though I haven't listened to it much; but I find the 80's lineup seems to be rather underrated on this list, esp. 3oaPP. As for more modern music, I had a brief debate with another reader who was dismissing current "alternative" as 'thrash/grunge/speed crap' (not his exact words, but a fair approximation). I said then and say now: it's practically meaningless to discuss or dismiss "alternative music" because the moniker covers a LARGE assortment of wildly different styles/sounds. Rock music didn't die in the 80's any more than Classical music died after Beethoven/Wagner/your choice (Beethoven & Wagner being two popular "last great composer" choices). I like progrock & jazz, but now my main preference lies in the diverse 'category' of "alternative." And as a final note: since "Alternative" is technically, simply, "not the mainstream/not what the majority of the public listens to," King Crimson is arguably far more "alternative" than, say, Oasis or the Smashing Pumpkins. Darius *---------------------------------------------- We may not be able to take over Europe, but DAMN can we march in formation! ------------------------------ From: "Bailey, Jim" Subject: Keith Tippett on KC Date: Fri, 9 Aug 1996 02:46:00 -0400 I hope this doesn't go on too long, since I may digress a bit, but there is relevance in here. It is part of an interview with Keith in the first issue of Impetus, a magazine from England in the late '70's / early '80's (I don't know the exact time of this one, since there is not a single date mentioned anywhere in the entire mag even for the gig reviews(!) such as Kokomo, which included Mel Collins, but it must be '78, because I bought it at the premiere performance of Frames, by Keith's follow-up to Centipede, Ark at the Roundhouse in London, and there's a programme tucked inside). So, on to the important stuff... Kenneth Ansell (interviewer) - When the Keith Tippett group finally de-energised what did you do as the next stage? KT : I had a long lay-off, just got married*. Bob Fripp asked me to go along to his sessions which I did and enjoyed them. They were the "In the Wake of Poseidon"; "Cat Food", etc. Bob Fripp is still a very good friend and after that he asked me to join King Crimson, but I didn't fancy it. It wasn't that I didn't dig the band, but it wasn't my cup of tea. If I had joined the band it would have only been because of the money. I think Bob is a very clever and serious musician, and he has contributed a lot to progressive rock, and it will stand up in a few years time, but I didn't fancy it. I couldn't just join the band for the money: that would be prostitution and music is too precious for that. So I didn't. I still played in his sessions, I loved them, but I didn't want to go on the road at that time. I'd rather keep struggling away doing my own thing. KA : It always seems that the road kills King Crimson each time anyway. KT : I think that Fripp had a lot to do with that anyhow, I mean Bob was quite awkward to get on with. Many people apart from the band found that. I never had any problems with Bob, he is one of my very good friends., but Bob was a very serious cat, and has different ideas. That's cool, because he was the instigator of of that whole scene so I could really go along with what he wanted, but in return, in his sessions he used to let me do just as I wanted. He knew that what I'd do would suit him, so we had no problems, but I know from other people that Bob has problems with them or they have problems with him. It's a personal thing. I think the bands probably folding (sic) because Bob couldn't find the right cats to actually do what he wanted regardless of musicianship. It was just personal chemistry and on the road that gets exaggerated. * to Julie Tippetts (nee Driscoll). Impetus was a great mag, but probably didn't last too long. On a subsequent trip to England I managed to snag issues 5 - 10, but not 2, 3, or 4. (Can anyone help out? Unlikely, I know, but it doesn't hurt to grovel). Everything from Manfred Mann's Chapter Three, to Alexander Scriabin! Don't know if there were any more (again, anyone...?). Just thought some people might like to know of this. Hope it helps. Hugs.
