In an exclusive to ITDON, Dan Maurer, drummer in the David Cross band, has revealed that guests on the next David Cross album (now being recorded) include Robert Fripp, John Wetton, and Peter Hammill! Also important to note is the band's upcoming gig on May 3rd at the Astoria, in London, in support of John Wetton. This promises to be a very special gig, but that is all I can say at this point. I'm looking for any information on either Bill Forth or Matt Henderson. I've searched the ET archives for entries on both of them but can find no data. Forth I know only from the photo on the ET Web site's pictures page, where he looks rather like a cross between Fripp and Richard Nixon. Matt Henderson I have heard of as a student of Guitar Craft, but apart from some sporadic mentions of his name, I don't have any other clue as to who he is or what he does. Can anyone shed some light on the identites and backgrounds of these two characters? Thanks, --TMH ------------------------------ From: bkwells at ibm dot net (Bruce Wells) Date: Fri, 22 Mar 96 23:32:05 Subject: Babies and King Crimson Babies in a second, but first, I would like to thank Robert Fripp for getting the band back together, and thanks to Toby for his efforts in producing Elephant Talk. The combination of these two men allowed me to rediscover my love of this band. I think, and hope, that this incarnation of King Crimson, will become one of the classic versions that people will remember for a long time. Enjoy it now while you can, it won't last forever (ie. see as many performances as you can get to). So due to the above mentioned events, I have been playing Crimson a lot more than I would normally, especially since I got married, and one of my wife's two flaws is that she does NOT like King Crimson (the other being a dislike of real beer). Anyway, unrelated the the King Crimson stereo wars, we decide to have a child. One day, as I was trying to keep our two month old entertained (ie. not screaming), I decided to play the Great Deciever box set that I recently acquired. Much to my amazement, Julia stopped her fussing and stared directly at the small speakers connected to my wife's personal CD player in the baby room. My wife had been unsucessfully using the setup for some insipid new age stuff, thinking that would calm the kid down. After a few seconds of this starring, Julia went on to her toys, and stopped fussing. Every once and awhile, she would look up and the speakers and take a break from trying to taste all of her toys. Then back to the taste test, but no f! ussing. Well I thought, Julia obviously likes music. So I tried other rock bands, like REM, David Bowie, Tom Petty, and others, but the screaming didn't stop with those bands, in fact, some made it worse. I went back to Crimson, this time B'Boom, and low and behold, no fussing. Eventually, I convinced my wife (via many screaming sessions halted by VROOOM) that Julia liked King Crimson, and that it was not my imagination. I also learned that Julia does not like the slower pieces like The Talking Drum, or the beginning and middel of LTiAp1. Now, at seven months, Julia gets visabily excited when ever I play the band on the stereo. She does not have the same reaction to other music. I would be interested if anyone else has had a similar experience, or knows what may be going on. email me personally to keep traffic down and I will post a follow up if anything interesting turns up. Until then, if you, or someone you know has a screaming kid, try cranking up Crimson and see what happens! I bought DGM 9505. * There's a new CD (of old recordings) by the legendary (so it is said) band "Circus" . I saw it this week in a CD shop in Tokyo. Could be interesting for those following ex-KC member works. Bye, Tom ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 1996 12:08:21 -0600 From: Chris Berg Subject: KC Summer tour Howdy all! Seen I haven't seen it on ET yet, I thought I'd mention that KC is scheduled to appear at several stops on the HORDE tour, crossing the US this summer. This was announced by John Popper last Friday evening. For those of you unaware of HORDE, it's a tour generally devoted to improvisational bands, usually with a bohemian leaning. This year Lennie Kravitz and Natalie Merchant are going to be some of the bigger names on the bill, which makes me wonder why KC is involved. Doesn't really seem like a very Frippish thing... peas Chris -- "In the Kingdom of the Bored, I wear the Royal Sweatpants." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 1996 14:34:56 -0500 From: Us Subject: (none) Regarding the "reason" for the fairly inaudible mellotron intro to 'Dinosaur'. Does anyone suppose that RF was using the "pre-historic" sound of the mellotron (for the 90's) to add another dimension to the feel of the song? The quality to the recording of said mellotron, to my tympanic membrane, is reminescent of a 78 rpm record. Pre-historic indeed! Secondly, does the return of the mellotron to KC signify a return of the KC sound to that of the first incarnation? Have a nice day. Not even the shallowest experience of music can be captured in a recording. Even the attempt to capture it renders such an event unlikely.
