Yes, well they certainly toured in England in Autumn 1989. I saw them at the Irish Centre in Leeds, a real small venue, with only about 200 people there. I found the music much more exciting live than on the album, which I found a dissapointment after having to wait 2 years for it. They also played similarly small venues, or smaller, in Bristol and Ambleside (sp?) in the Lake District and a couple of other places that I cannot remember. The tour was *very* low key, considering the popularity of Crimson and also of Toyah. I found the concert very interesting, seeing Robert playing live, barely looking at the audience, and only occasionally smiling at any Crimson or Frippertonics calls from the crowd. Toyah was the complete opposite, very excited and animated. Paul Bevis was a superb drummer live. They played for about an hour and a half, playing a Toyah track and then repeating the group title track to close. Ian Kelly. The gig was much as Ian Kelly describes it. One funny bit was when the power cut out. The band just stopped, and very elegantly walked off stage and came back on when the power did. I found Toyah really annoying, and tried to shut her out! Gunn and Beavis were superb. Fripp was far too low key. The whole thing seemed totally sterile to me. Yes, it's Capt. Apathy, here once again!! This time I'd like to talk about A. Belew's album, Inner Revolution. I had heard good reviews about it a few days before the release, so I was excited. I purchased the album, and have not regretted it. It's great!! I've only had a chance to listen to it once, but I think it's a very solid album. The thing that amazes me about Adrian is that he plays ALL of the instruments and vocals on his album. It shows the incredible amount of talent Belew has. Now, as for him touring, your guess is as good as mine. I think it's very likely that he will tour, and there's a very good chance he would open for Crimso. I say this because during Bowie's Sound & Vision tour, he opened up for Bowie a lot of times. This would make him one tired Adrian, but it would make us one happy audience!! Lastly, I'd like to talk about Bill(Bruford for all you Crimso virgins). I said this in Discipline #24, and I'll say it again: Bruford is out touring with Earthworks. He will be in Philly in March, I believe at the Theater For The Living Arts. The point is, I didn't see him going back to Crimso before, and I don't see him going back now. As for this new rumor of Jerry Marotta being the new drummer: interesting. But, I'll believe it when I see it.... --Captain Apathy Brouhaha!! It's official now from what I understand. I *CAN'T* believe Bruford is remaining with Yes (Yecch). Apparently all eight members of that band head into the studio in March to come up with another wretched go-for-the-ca$h offering. Mind you, I think Moratta is a *fabulous* drummer and should work well with Crimson, and also considering his 12 years (approx) experience playing with Tony Levin, a phenomenal rhythm section is sure to materialize. Yet, somehow a Crimson without Bruford just doesn't seem right.. know what I mean? I think Bruford is one of the best rock drummers I've heard, though he certainly has his bland moments as well (e.g., Yes' _Union_, which was pretty bland in general, I think!) I don't really understand what all the hoopla over Levin is. While he seems competent enough, he doesn't seem to really stand out in my mind as a Great Bassist. Maybe it's just that the songs I've heard him play on (mostly CK and Gabriel studio pieces; I've never seen him in concert) have relatively simple bass parts. What am I missing? >I also enjoy John Wetton's vocals with Asia and have most of the Asia >albums. I think Wetton is a great vocalist (and, like Levin, a competent but not superlative bassist), but I'm very ambivalent about Asia. I enjoy their first album a lot, though the lyrics are consistently lightweight, but I recently bought _Alpha_ and thought it stank. (Maybe because Howe didn't contribute to the songwriting.) > I'm not crazy about Adrian's vocals, but my roommate saw him play >guitar on Bowie's Sound and Vision tour and told me that he just stole the >show. He said that Bowie had to stop singing just to watch and listen to >Belew play...Is Adrian really that good a guitarist or is my roommate just >Belew-ing hot air? :) A lot of people don't seem to like Belew. I rather like both his vocals and guitar work, though, again, I've never seen him in concert. I bought his solo album _Mr._Music_Head_ and *didn't* like it, though. Mainly because there was very little of his superb guitar work on it. >I was introduced to Fripp's music when I bought /I Advanced Masked/ and >/Bewitched/, the two albums he did with Andy Summers. I've been searching for those, but haven't found them yet. > I then started >buying Robert's solo albums. I love /Network/, but *couldn't stand* /Let >the Power Fall/!!! Perhaps I'm > missing something here? >From what I can tell, CK I is the original line-up with Fripp, Greg Lake (later of ELP) and some others. They recorded three albums. CK II is the line-up that recorded _Islands_, and included Boz Burrell (sp?), who later went on to play bass for Bad Company. CK III is the Fripp/Wetton/Bruford/ others line-up. CK IV has Belew and Levin (and Bruford and Fripp). It's a bit hard to conceptualize, since, until CK IV, no two CK albums had the exact same band line-up. I just spoke with Rick Chafen, the guy who has been booking tours of Daevid Allen, Mother Gong, Tim Blake and National Health in the US over the last 14 years or so. One of the tours he's feeling out putting together soon is a tour of the David Cross Band. This is a quartet that includes members from his recent band Low Flying Aircraft. I have no info on what they sound like, but I thought Crimson fans might be happy to hear he's still playing live. I'm interested in getting an informal feel for what kind of interest there is so I can relay positive or negative feedback to Rick. Please *email* me at malcolm at wrs dot com if you'd like to see a show of the Cross band in the US or have any feedback or info about his recent activities. - malcolm at wrs dot com [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: Carl Ponder Subject: drummer we all know... Hi, This is my first post in a long time. I remember posting once before - a question about Joanna Walton which NO ONE saw fit to answer. :( Anyway, is it absolutely confirmed that Belew will be in this line-up? - I'd rather he wasn't... I wonder if either Guy Evans or Nic Potter will be in the running for drummer, bassist, respectively. all for now. -dan(n) [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The views expressed in discipline are those of the individual authors only.
