My name is Rob Petrone, and I just joined the digest yesterday (I heard of it on the Peter Gabriel list). I am a new fan of KC and am as yet unDiciplined, so I have a few questions. I heard of King Crimson a long time ago, but never bought any of their albums although I am a big fan of prog rock. I love Bill Bruford's work from Yes and have seen him in concert with Yes and ABWH. I also saw Tony Levin in concert with Peter Gabriel tour and he really impressed me (so did his studio work with pg). But I really became a fan of Tony with the ABWH album and the subsequent ABWH tour just left me speechless. Tony is now one of my favorite bassits. I also enjoy John Wetton's vocals with Asia and have most of the Asia albums. I'm not crazy about Adrian's vocals, but my roommate saw him play guitar on Bowie's Sound and Vision tour and told me that he just stole the show. He said that Bowie had to stop singing just to watch and listen to Belew play...Is Adrian really that good a guitarist or is my roommate just Belew-ing hot air? :) I was introduced to Fripp's music when I bought /I Advanced Masked/ and /Bewitched/, the two albums he did with Andy Summers. I then started buying Robert's solo albums. I love /Network/, but *couldn't stand* /Let the Power Fall/!!! I gave that to a friend of mine. I'm not a fan of minimalism. I saw Robert in concert in Philly with his League of Crafty Guitarists. I knew at the time that Robert was a former member of KC, but I didn't decide to look into KC until I found out that Bill, Tony, John, and Robert were all members at one time or another. With a linup like that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to purchase the Box Set as a "baptism-by- fire" introduction to KC. I absolutely love it. The Box Set is the only KC material I own right now, but this won't be so for very long. Some questions: 1. What exactly is the significance of the I's and the II's and the III's that people use to refer to King Crimson? Are these linups? If so, who was in each lineup? I have the KC family tree, but it doesn't seem to jive with what people have been mentioning on the list. Perhaps I'm missing something here? I'll save other questions for later posts... Thanx. ........................................................................ : + :: : : (~~~~~) (Working on a quote :: Rob Petrone : : [[I]] for a signature...) :: Temple University, Phila., PA : :................................::....................................: [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1992 10:37 -0500 From: MOONLIT KNIGHT Subject: Re: discipline #23 Someone on the Gabriel list, process name of Nous Sommes du Soliel, declared that Bruford had no intention of leaving Yes or and definitely would not be the new Crimson drummer, and that Yes was alive and well and had studio time booked for later in the year. Hmm. Now I'd like to research the claim made on this list that Bruford would be returning. Did Fripp imply as much? Someone said something that he implied it would be Bruford (something about a mystery drummer we all know). I wonder if the Sunday all over the World guy is in the running. Seeing how Fripp has talked about the tradition of Crimson and how it is open to people who are in the spirit of the band whether or not they've been in it before, I was surprised to hear that the lineup would be the same, but now I've latched on to the idea and would be bummed to see someone other than Bruford. The way the second (or fourth depending on how you want to count it) incarnation's music was so different, I wondered if this one's would be too, and thought there might be a fifth player, probably of keyboards. Also, a couple of questions: Did Sunday all over the World ever tour? Does anyone know when the new band is going to begin? Also (just one more thing) I'm wonderng about this new release, Atmosphere. I was looking through Goldmine and saw a boot called Atmosphere, so I'm thinking this may not be a new album but a part of a beat-the-boots attempt that Fripp said he do in that Goldmine article in January, ie if disc 4 excited people he might put out more live stuff. The thing about the 73-4 boots is that they don't include the long improvisations >from that period, just the tunes. Of interest to both groups ... excuse me if I am being redundant, but I've heard that the drummer for the new King Crimson will be none other than Gabriel's old tom-tom master, Jerry Morotta! I really missed his work with Gabriel after Security (though he plays some on So) and his heavy use of toms instead of cymbals makes him the obvious #2 choice for a Crimson drummer. As great as Katche is it was a close choice between him and Jerry as far as live sound is concerned ... I sometimes wished he was still around as PG's touring man. If Crimson is going to be active this spring into the summer, there is a big question of who is going to play bass for Gabriel on the tour. Not that Levin hasn't simultaneouly done both in the 82-83 period, but I imagine he didn't have alot of spare time in between (one also wonders if he is on the new Floyd album). Anyway, I'm excited ...
