I don't think they picked the right song for that venue. I personally like the song Dinosaur but I didn't think it worked on TV. Also, why spend so much time psycho analyzing Fripp? The two times I saw him (with League of Gentlemen and League of Crafty Guitarists) I went to see and hear him play his wonderful music not to play chess with him! He can act like he wants as long as he keeps making quality music (and it's legal of course). My girlfriend and I waited patiently after the show near the tourbus for the band to make an appearence, hoping they would before too late [i had to go the work at seven the next morning]. Trey Gunn appeared first with a whole group of people and meandered off before I actually realized it was him. Not disenchanted, we waited for the rest of the band to arrive. The next thing to happen was Pat and Robert. That is to say, they appeared out of nowhere in a surburban driving away [Pat was driving]. I had expected Robert to be uncommunicative, however, so this did not disillusion me nor my girlfriend. Finally, Tony came out and we walked up to him [along with the fifteen or so others who had been waiting]. While my girlfriend asked him to draw a happy face on her ticket and others waited in line for their turn for a word, Bill strolled over. I went up to him before anyone else could and shook his hand, told him how much i enjoyed the show and asked him to sign my Thrak CD cover. He was very nice, jovial and talkative. Afterwards, I got Tony to do the same [sign the CD cover] and marched over to the van where Adrian had come to sit to have him do the same. The three were very nice, seemed interested in the fans and didn't look as if they were as tired as I expected them to be [however, they might have been and i was unaware]. And that is how it was... if Tony or Bill or Adrian are reading, again, I enjoyed the show thoroughly and hope to see and meet you [plural] again sometime. -bob $$$$$?$*?**$??$$$**$*?*?*?$*$$*??$*$?$*$?$$*?**$*$$*?$$$*?******$$?**$ ?$***$*$?$$?$$$??$****$?$$?*???? I have read somewhere that you are correct, he has practiced Tai Chi in the past. On the same note, I guess I'm more sensitive to the "being left alone" thing, because I work with a lot of astronauts. Some of them are very open and don't mind interacting with the public, while others are very private persons who would rather just do their job and go home at the end of the day. Some don't seem to mind when I put that needle in their arm, others would rather eat sheep dip. Still, they love their job and show up even though there are unpleasant things involved. Isn't it wonderful that we are all individuals? It would be so boring if each of us reacted the same to every situation. Regarding those who say that Fripp is happy to take fans' money without giving anything in return... Ummm..well he didn't produce the album for free, ya know? It's kind of like blood donations. People get upset when they find out they actually have to pay to receive a unit of donated blood. After all, the person who gave the blood didn't get paid for it! But you have to remember, there is a lot of stuff that happens to that blood before you get it, to make it a quality product, and that stuff costs a lot of money. Likewise, music has to have a lot done to it before it comes out on that CD. Same with touring. When you're in Houston one night and New Orleans the next, Florida the day after that, it gets expensive. There's equipment to buy and move and road crews to pay. I'm sure I'm not telling y'all anything new. My point is that it's entirely possible Mr. Fripp and friends are losing money on this tour. You never know. Me, I'll just lay my money down for the items that they offer, hope they get enough satisfaction to do it again, and not worry about whether Robert Fripp knows I'm alive. ~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~| http://www.ghgcorp.com/medtek Sandra J. Richard Sheehy [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: "Peter" Date: Sun, 19 Nov 1995 22:11:50 +0000 Subject: Brief review of New Haven 11/18 Well, I think Sat. night was the most unusual rock concert I've been to in a while - totally cliche-free and unpredictable! I don't remember the exact set list but for the most part the songs were the same as other shows but the order was quite different. After the CGT (super!), something from "1999" played over the PA, and Fripp came onstage almost unnoticed and smoothly added his own playing over the "1999" stuff, which slowly faded out until it was just Fripp soundscaping. Bruford and Mastelotto came out and started making noise over this, and after about a minute or two, the rest of the band came out and it turned into "Thrak." I think "Red" was done next (again, I can't remember for sure), and then a bunch of other stuff, mostly things that have been written here already. They did play "Three of a Perfect Pair" and skipped "One Time" and "Walking on Air." Notes: -the CGT stood up and closed their set with Dick Dale's "Miserlou." Very cool. They also did Beethoeven's 5th and Bach's organ thing. I also remember "Yamanashi Blues" (the opener) and "Melrose Avenue." -in the middle of the show, Adrian mentioned the Beatles special that's starting Sunday on ABC, and the new song, "Free as a Bird," that John Lennon recorded and never finished, that the rest of the band worked with. Adrian then proceeded to PLAY "Free as a Bird" alone, getting a piano sound through the guitar synth, and singing exactly like John Lennon (not a stretch for him, I guess). Good song, BTW. Watch the show! (turns out that Adrian got a demo of the tape a long time ago) This got a very favorable reaction from the crowd, and one guy was moved to shout "I love you, Adrian!" -Tony and Adrian both seemed to be having a great time and were all smiles throughout the show, especially during the chorus of "Dinosaur." Trey and Pat were pure professionals, and the Fripp looked like he'd rather be somewhere else. -I was most impressed by those who I LEAST expected to be impressive. I'd thought Adrian was the weak link in this Crimson until I saw him in action. His singing was excellent, his guitar playing was killer (I always figured that all the weird stuff was Fripp but I was wrong), and he works a crowd better than I thought he would be able to. Tony Levin was fun to watch, and Trey Gunn is a very unique talent. His playing on the "Two Sticks" improv and his solo early in "The Talking Drum" were incredible. -even without spotlights, Fripp was fairly well-lit and was the night's one disappointment for me. I would have liked to see him let loose on the guitar a bit more than he did- he seemed to be doubling either Trey or Adrian for much of the time and was barely audible in the mix. Oh well, it's his life... -lots of obnoxious drunks yelled at every quiet moment, mostly with requests ("One More Red Nightmare" and "Schizoid Man" were the most common). This is the third big concert I've been to at the Palace Theater, and it's the first one where people were allowed to bring drinks they'd bought at the bar into the concert hall. I think this may have something to do with the inordinate number of loud audience members. Good work, fellows! Pete [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: 20 Nov 1995 08:58:38 -0500 From: "Jonathan Block" Subject: Gig Review- New Haven Nov.1 Crimson finally made their way back to New Haven. The band was stunning, even through their apparent exhaustion. Highlights included an elastic B'Boom/Thrak opener and Belew's solo performance of Lennon's "Free as a Bird" with guitar as piano. A slap on the wrist to the gentleman who requested "One More Red Nightmare" loudly throughout the show. Fripp, as always was resplendent in divergence. But who can blame him? It's a dangerous place. All in all a concert to give one hope. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] The views expressed in Elephant Talk are those of the individual authors only.
