What albums did they release and, of these, which do >you recommend the most highly? Don't you mean King Crimson IV, here? Whatever. They released three albums, Discipline (1981), Beat (1982) and Three Of A Perfect Pair (1984). I recommend them in this order: Discipline: One of the best rock albums I've ever heard. (You think this is hyperbole. No, it isn't. It's really that good.) There really isn't much more to say besides that. The performances, compositions, arrangements and lyrics are all excellent, and the set has a musical and thematic unity which holds it all together. Great stuff! Three Of A Perfect Pair: Flawed, largely in that some of the instrumentals end up noodling around to no end for a long time. And sometimes it just falls flat for me. But despite this, it pretty interesting. Even its flaws can be interesting at times. My favorites tracks are the first three: "Three Of A Perfect Pair", "Model Man" and "Sleepless". But the instrumental "Industry" is neat as well. As an album, it doesn't hold together as well as Discipline, largely I guess because the band was coming apart at the time. But it's worth a spin in the CD player now and then. Which is more than I can say for... Beat: The only tracks on this album I can stand are "Sartori In Tangiers" and "Requiem", which are both fair but not outstanding instrumentals. Most of the rest is drek, I think. Pompous lyrics, flat arrangements, and just not very much creativity evident. A very strong feeling of sameness. This is not just my least favorite CK IV album, it's my least favorite King Crimson album all around. So, in summary, Discipline is definitely the one you want, in my opinion! Yes, it is Captain Apathy, here once again to throw my thoughts out on table. 1) Bill Bruford is (right now) planning his Earthworks tour. He will be in Philly March 12 (although I don't know if I will be able to catch it. Damn!!) He seems to be more adamant about drumming Jazz than anything else at this point, anyway. So, it is doubtful (to me anyway) that he will be in this new Crimson. 2) The next question is, if Adrian Belew releases an album, wouldn't he want to tour by himself? Or he will tour with Crimso then solo? Or better yet, will he open for Crimso?? Now THERE would be a show!! 3) Has ANYONE heard anymore about the reformation of ELP?? I had heard rumour or two back in October, but nothing has happened. Oh well... It's a dangerous place.... I heard that the new King Crimson album will be called 'Atmosphere'. Anyone know for sure? I found this out because in Overseas Shopper/Simmons, the overseas CD catalogs i subscribe to, they showed an entry to the effect: King Crimson Atmosphere (New Release) or something like it. Post or email if you know for sure. Thanx. -lewis at tacky dot cs dot olemiss dot edu [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 17 Feb 92 21:29:30 PST From: "John M. Relph" Subject: Atmospheres The Atmospheres CD is a bootleg, of at least two different shows. Check out the latest issue of Goldmine (with the Platters on the cover?) for more details. -- John [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 19 Feb 92 10:47:16 GMT From: Bertie Subject: Fripp interview There has been alot of talk about various interviews Fripp has been giving lately. As yet though, nobody has mentioned the one he gave to Record Collector ( Dec '91) - I only heard about it second hand myself. Anyway, I would have mentioned it weeks ago, except I've been too busy ! The interesting points were as follows :- 1) When asked about KC reforming, Fripp became unsettled and would not be drawn as to any details. 2) The last three KC albums are still selling well (especially in the US), but despite this the entire KC back catalog has been deleted, as of three weeks after the release of the boxed set. Fripp said he wasn't too worried about this - he's still owed royalities from EG. Any comments ? Remember - I've not seen the article myself, but it was from a reliable source. Can anybody confirm the news of the deletions ? Paul.
