I must thank whoever posted the information about it to this list originally, because that's how I found out about it and thank all the people involved in getting it organized (I'm pretty sure a few of them check into this list at least ocassionally). Anyway.... I've been corresponding with a few folks from this list individually, the general concept being "write something about the class." I have mixed feelings about this, but am probably going to attempt such, although it'll be more about me and my experience than about the class. I'll throw it up on my web page, and let you all know the URL when I get around to it. Be warned that the home page is sorta like putting your head in a blender though... or so an ex-boss tells me. This pairing of the amazing voice of Lebanese singer Dunya Yusin with Enosified guitar is gorgeous. In the liner notes, RF is credited with co-arranging the song, but not with playing, and I wonder if this was for legal reasons. I suppose this could be Byrne soloing a la RF (Eno's treatment certainly contributed to this), but it would be untypical of his rhythmic playing style. Does anyone have any hard info on this? BTW, I've always felt this album, with its rhythmic and amusing use of voice samples, shares a kinship with "I Am What I Am" on Belew's Young Lions release, although the latter was recorded a decade later. It'd be great to hear more Belew songs in this vein. Thanks for a great list, Toby! Keep up the good work. Best, Nick Didkovsky I'm one of them! Doctor Nerve's music has an urgent intensity and complexity that would appeal to many Crimson fans. Fans of Robert Fripp's lead guitar work will feel right at home with Nick Didkovsky's tightly arranged guitar parts and improv breaks. The end of the Beta 14 OK CD is great for those who want to try their hand at assembling their own "compositions" out of the 40 or so short sound snippets (called "Nerve Events") provided there. There actually is another CD where other composers were invited to do just that (forgot the name, unfortunately). I do remember that these composers did some pretty amazing things. One of them, for example, used his CD player (playing the "Nerve Events") to vibrate a sheet of metal. BTW, I'm not working for Mr. Didkovsky, Doctor Nerve or the Cuneiform label. Hovever, I got an e-mail from John this morning in response to my query "Is Chalkhills dead???" He responded that it is in fact temporarily deceased while he is getting a new website together. If I hear anything else, I'll keep you posted if I hear anything new. I have been trying to locate a copy of "Damage", and think I might have a source. If this falls through, could anybody please help me find it(I'm in Manhattan, by the way..) I have been following how webspeak abbreviations have been sprouting up, and I think I've figured them all out except one which I see here frequently--ROIO, which I know refere to bootleg, burt what is it an acronym for??? I picked up a copy of a magazine/book called "Marquee" with His Smiling Eminence on the front cover . There is an article on KC and another on David Cross as well as what I can only assume is a capsulized review of VROOOM... unfortunately, it's all in Japanese!. I can't read or translate it, but would gladly Fax pages to anyone who could/would (US only--I can't Fax outside). My final points I know I'm probably gonna get slammed for, but here goes... Although I LOVE David Sylvian's albums as well as "The First Day", I have a lot of trouble with him in concert. I saw him during the "Secrets of the Beehive" tour at Town Hall with Steve Jansen, David Torn, and Mark Isham, and although the musicianship was superb, the energy level was, IMHO, imperceptable on his part. I found the same problem during the Sylvian/Fripp show at The Beacon Theatre on 11/2/93. In fact, I actually nodded off briefly during BOTH shows. Now, this may be a problem on my part (and, no--I don't do drugs, thank you) because I can't find anyone among my colleagues who concurs. It's just something about Sylvian live that evades me. That's why I'm looking for "Damage" to see if there's something else there... On the subject of Town Hall, I was at the 6/3/95 Crimshow. Once again, let me prface before you guys kill me... I have been at every KC show in NYC since Central Park 7/1/74 and I have never seen a less satisfying show as Town Hall. The sound was so muddy I couldn't here Trey Gunn at all and RF could have been a manequin for all I heard from him (I'm not one of those who said he didn't play because you could see that he was. It may just be me, but Tony didn't look too happy about it either. BB only seemed to wake up about halfway through the show(during VROOOM he seemed to be going through the motions), but after that point he did kick ass and finish up strong. My friend and I discussed this after the show over some damn good coffee that the band could continue as a trio of Belew-Levin-Bruford and do quite well. Although Pat Mastelotto was very energetic, he felt that he didn't bring much to the table, although in my opinion, he held up a great deal of the early apart of the show. The only musical highpoint (acoustically) was "Red", which reared it's magnificent head above the sludge. Although I liked the inclusion of Talking Drum, I also missed the fact that nothing from Beat or ToaPP was performed. Despite all of this, I AM NOT SAYING THAT THIS WAS A BAD SHOW!! I'm just saying compared to, let's say, the Savoy in 1981 or the second Pier concert in June 1984, it was a disappointment. I'm sorry that I didn't post on this sooner, but I did analyze and agonize over this a long time and I didn't want to be rash or give a snap judgement on the show, Although I love these guys and think that THRAK is their best album since Red, I just expected more. Or maybe I'm just being picky. I am and will continue to be a loyal fan. You'll just have to trust me on this. 8) Cheers, Chris Van Valen It's alright, it's over your head. One of the best live albums I've heard in a while, despite the odd hiccup in mixing and playing. Some of the versions on here could almost be called definitive. Even songs I'm at best indifferent to, such as "People" or some of the 80s things, take on a new dimension here. Given that any live album can only hope to capture about ten percent of the total experience, I'm keener than ever for KC to come down to this part of the world on the strength of this album. A number of ECM CDs - including this one - were difficult to get in the United States while ECM distribution was switching over from PolyGram to BMG. Happy to relate, that interim period is over, and BMG copies of the discs (identified by a different catalog number and the BMG logo on the back) are very readily accessible to U.S. customers. A visit to the ECM Web site confirms that *Cloud About Mercury* is available, under the new BMG catalog number 78118-21322-2. If you can't convince your local record store that they can get it for you, it can be ordered directly through ECM's very fine Web page (http://www.ecmrecords.com). That Torn CD is very highly recommended for admirers of Bruford and Levin. I'd also like to hear more of the Bill Bruford/Mick Karn rhythm section, featured on the best tracks of David Torn's 1990 *Door X* album (Windham Hill WD-1096). Mr. Bruford is thanked for his "indomitable spirit" in the fine print of the *Door X* booklet. He was last seen in the London area, and has appeared on recent solo releases by David Cross, and possibly Keith Tippett. Both appeared on a release Dan did called Low Flying Aircraft. Dan is a drummer, and I think he bought and was playing Bruford's old Simmons kit. I am hoping to establish email with him, as I reside in the USA. Later I found out that they use this concert as a base for the record ( starless and bible black). Still love Nightwatch as one of the best. But for me the best solo is the one in the Earthbound-live version of Sailors Tail. Terrible sound, but the best solo. Any better ? I'm just listening to my newly purchased copy of B'Boom. It's a wee beaut too. Elephant Talk kicks, in particular. Yes, I'm glad I purchased the third of this line-up's six CDs. Whoa, hey, what? Yes, I have a little theory (ee-heem! The dinosaur...). Previous incarnations of the Crimson Beast lasted three albums each, approximately. This time, I see the hallmarks of the double trio extending to the CD releases. A perfect pair of threes, if you like. Six musicians, in two trios. Six CDs, in two trios - "official" and "unofficial": 1) Vrooom - a sneak preview of the lineup, rather than a 'finished' release 2) Thrak - an "official" studio album, with sharp clean edges 3) B'Boom - released as an alternative bootleg. Live and dirty 4) an official studio album 5) another semi-finished or live release 6) an official studio album since the words Vrooom, Thrak and B'Boom are onomatopoeic descriptions of a trio of musicians (soundscape, heavy stickwork and drum), the remaining three probably will be as well, with one official finished release named for each instrument and one semifinished release for each as well. That means that CD 5 will be called Doomp, and CDs 4 and 6 will be called Takatak and Nyowwwm. Thus it is written ;) Nostril-damus (a.k.a. Hi! I just picked up Islands at the local library (yes, the libraries here has got lots of old prog-records), and what I saw on the net didn't really match with what I thought the running order of the album really was when listening to it. The album itself had malfunctioning labels and on the cover there's nothing. I listened to it with Ladies... as the first song, but on the net (maybe the discography) it said that Ladies... was on side 2. To me it being on side 1 makes a little more sense cause the orchestra tuning up at the end of side 1 fits well with the orchestral intro on side 2. But why is the tuning up at the end of side 1? Wouldn't it make more sense if it was BEFORE the Islands suite? Then, all the orchestral parts would be after the tune up. Hmm, I'm all confused here, can someone enlighten me a bit, please? /Mats Mats Rydstrom - d94-mry at nada dot kth dot se /~~~~~~~~~~\~~BassPlayer/BREAKPOINT~~/ - http://www.nada.kth.se/~d94-mry \ no wrong, no right / ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ or guilt admission / ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 00:01:17 -0700 (MST) From: Dan Howarth Subject: sunday all over disc cover recently purchased the saotw disc, and noticed that the paint/design/track listing side of the cd is actually that of 'a show of hands' from the league of crafty gittarizts. any experience with this? the music is that of saotw, matching the liner. it's just the printed side of the disc which is wrong.
