I've been away this week, and rather a backlog of ET posts has built up. Rather than risk making people's mailboxes explode with a 0.6M issue, I'm splitting up the backlog into a number of issues. This issue has recent gig reviews and ticket requests -- I guessed people would like to see this material first. But, PLEASE, take it easy on posting to ET till the backlog is cleared. Please wait a few days, at least. By the way, I have what I hope you'll accept as a reasonable excuse for the absence of an ET earlier this week -- I was in London at an Albert Hall gig! Opening by the CGT: 1/2 hour, incl. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (great!) and Bach's Toccata and Fugue (great too, but apparently a bit too long for some noisy people in the audience...). Hilarious country moments. Overall they seem to me at their best when they stick to acoustic sound, the distorted parts did not fit very well. On with KC. Gig list Comments Discipline Perfect intro. Audience aghast at the ending note.... VROOOM Bruford (nearly ?) got lost in his polyrythms! Coda: Marine 475 Frame by frame I missed the intro. Fripp's fast parts a bit drowned in the sound. Dinosaur Power, power. Tellur was here. One time Whew. Catch your breath. Nice lightshow. Red High point. Never heard Red so powerful. a liquid soundscape B'Boom A long version, very impressive. THRAK Completely spaced out middle part. 2 drummers barely enough to keep us in the pulse. Matte Kudasai Sex, sleep, eat, drink, dream People VROOOM VROOOM No coda. Elephant talk More flesh than the record version. Indiscipline Encore 1: Heartbeat Incl. reversed-guitar solos. Boy, I knew Belew could play fast, but backward in time ? :-) Encore 2: The talking drum Bruford: Trying to clap your hands ? OK, now for a different rhythm! (at least 4 times) Lark's tongues in aspic, Earthshaking. pt. II Thanks in French by Bruford. Encore 3: Walking on air A bit weak for an ending. Overall impressions: Great sound (if a bit loud) and good, concise lightshow. Fripp stayed in such a dark spot that some had a hard time figuring out what he was playing! Belew's voice was in a great shape. Gunn's and Levin's bass foundations solid and crunchy. Drummers interplay astonishing, surprisingly appropriate on stage. And telluric ensemble power, mostly felt in Red, LTiA and Dinosaur. At long last I've been able to chkeck it out by myself: Crimso on stage is a different beast altogether. Don't miss them! KC (himself) was in town, and many of His subjects went out to go and hear Him despite that rainy day. 20 pm : The California Guitar Trio started a nice little show as guest 'stars'. Very sympathic guys playing on their brand new black guitars. We could listen to some of their 'old' tunes, but also to new ones. 'It's hard to imagine that there're only 3 guys playing' was what my girlfriend said. And I agreed. I remembered, 2 years ago, the League Of Crafty... came in town and what we used to hear in the audience was : 'We can easily imagine 1 or 2 good guitarists playing just in the same way of these almost 30 rookies'... And I must say, that this trio is much more exciting to listen to. 21pm : KC on stage. The first time in my life ! I think I can die now ! A 3 level-stage. >from left to right : 1st floor : Fripp, Belew, Levin. 2nd floor : Gunn (in the middle). 3rd floor : Mastelotto and Bruford (in a cute flashy yellow jacket with black shirt and yellow tie). Several remarks : Good points : 1 - Energy - Happy to be here ('It's an increbile evening' Bruford) 2 - Belew : Great mood, big voice, very enthousiastic. And what has strikened me (can I say that ?) is the very very important part he plays in KC as a guitarist ! I have noticed that most of the guitar tricks I liked in the albums were coming from him, and not from Fripp. 3 - Levin : very impressive, strong and solid but also sympathic (You'll notice it's important for me !...). 4 - Bruford : Great, Great, Great ! 5 - Mastelotto : As discrete as he could. But we could feel that the 2 drummers had found a common ground leading to very constructive playing. 'Bad points' 1 - As on the Cds, it's hard to understand why there're 2 bass or stick players. The result doesn't convice me even if it makes the sound bigger. Gunn was very discrete that night. I think that in that way, the idea of a double trio is a failure. 2 - Fripp, despite all the love I have for his music, has disappointed me that night. Playing 'only' rythmic guitar. The only time there were a little exchange between him and Belew, he made a 15 sec solo of soundscapes, turning his buttons without hitting the strings. Shit ! Anyway, if you want more impressions give me an email and I'll be glad to talk with you... Sylvain [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 15 May 1995 16:31:14 +0200 (MET DST) From: "Erik.Matthysen" Subject: GIG REVIEW (SPOLIER!): Brussels, 14/5/95 Hello Crimson-fans, I saw KC in Brussels and they were ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! To see these guys playing the music I think is beyond comparison to anything, was really great. The playlist was almost exactly the same as that in Milan (see a couple of ETs back): Discipline - Vrooom + Coda - Frame by Frame - Dinosaur - One Time - Red - Radio 1 - B'Boom - Thrak - Matte Kudasai - Sex etc - People - Vrooom Vrooom - Elephant Talk - Indiscipline, first encore: Heartbeat, second encore: Talking Drum - LTIA part II, third (!!) encore: Walking on Air. Some subjective impressions: Discipline was a very strong opener, with Vrooom as the perfect opener of the Thrak material. Frame by Frame was IMHO rather weak, and "Red" did not really live up to my great expectations. It was not as gutsy as it could have been. The drum duets B'Boom and Talking Drum were really highlights, very impressive. "Thrak" I thought was very good, probably it only works if the atmosphere is right - no problem with these six guys in front of you! Vrooom Vrooom was also very strong, Elephant Talk: I missed the knife-sharp solos from the recorded version. Indiscipline: GRRREAAAT song, with a long teasing intro, Adrian at its best, very atmospheric, quintessential KC. Then the encores: Heartbeat, and the band left the stage again: this could't be it? (I knew from spoilers! what was supposed to follow...) Then the band returned, drummers took their seats for a long intro to Talking Drum and a splendid version of LTIA part II, including massive coda. Unbelievably, KC returned for another encore, a quiet "Walking on Air", as a true coda to the evening. Absolute highlights: B'Boom + Thrak, Indiscipline, LTIA. Least impressive of all: most vocal material from Thrak and some Discipline songs. As in other shows, Fripp was nearly invisible, though he got impressive applause and cheers when he finally confronted the audience at the end! Some other impressions: CGT as opener was a bit disappointing, except for one song which was definitely Fripp (after a tedious Ennio Morricone number...): any fellow ET-er who can give me the reference? The sound of KC was really perfect, not as loud as I'd feared (I had a few sleepless nights about taking my partner with me who is not even a rock fan... she actually liked "Discipline" and "Matte Kudasai", and didn't complain about the loudness, though she still doesn't understand why I'm so crazy about this band). Visuals were OK with lots of psychedelic projections and at appropriate times the whole stage flooded in crimson spotlights. Fellow ET-ers, I had fun. I've just come back from the Albert Hall show (17/5/95) - It was worth it ! There's little point in reviewing it as they seem to be following the set pattern of the other European shows. Anybody out there dithering - GO. The two drummers work well together - far better than the CDs demonstrate. The only shame is that Tony Levin & Trey Gunn tended to blur together in the mix, which seemed to me a bit of a waste of talent. A few knowing looks went round when they fluffed on a couple of the numbers (Indiscipline & Larks) but I imagine that most of the audience would have missed it as they recovered so well. All in all a great show. More please ... I thought I ought to review the performance at the RAH last night (17.05.95, co-incidentally BBs birthday) - first time I've posted/got someone to post for me! I last saw Crimso at the Hammersmith Palais in 1984, having been a crimhead since 1975. Last night was pretty special, despite what I think is an inappropriate rock venue. Hardly the sweaty vista of bodies under arc light of the 1970s. Half an hour of fun with the California Guitar Trio, opening with (I think) Bicycling to/in Afghanistan, and including Toccata and fugue in D minor; Cannonfire? (I don't possess the CD); The good, the bad and the ugly; and a demonstration of their great footwork during Apache. I shall now list the crimsonumbers played with a few comments about each piece in turn. 1) VROOOM - this could become a classic Crimso show stopper. At first I thought they had opened with LTIA part 1 with the delicate jingling of percussion 2) Frame by frame - melodic and manic 3) Dinosaur - My son (age 6) loves this song. Couldn't work out from where I was sitting if they used tapes or guitar synth for the mellotron sounds 4) One time - I love this song 5) Red - One of their best. Doom-laden. Played brilliantly. BB took his jacket off sometime around this point 6) B'boom - The Fripp soundscape sounded like early Floyd. I think I can now live with PMs drumming 7) THRAK - A brilliant onomatopaeic description 8) Matte kudesai - evidently time to slow down with a tuneful ballad 9) Sex sleep eat drink dream - the studio version reminds me of Crimso with Boz vocals. It was less nasty live 10) People - This is Belew funk at its best. AB was enjoying himself 11) VROOOM VROOOM - Even better than VROOOM. A track written to be played live, with the foreboding Red middle section. Give me more! 12) Elephant talk - AB still manic. His Strat appeared to be fluorescing red/orange! 13) Indiscipline - A unique birthday version for BB FIRST ENCORE! 14) Talking drum - (Unfortunately) severely abridged. Was it guitar or stick playing the violin part? 15) LTIA part 2 - Totally excellent Second encore 16) Walking on air - What a goodnight kiss! The band were in a sort of sartorial symmetry: (L to R) PM, TG and BB were raised up behind RF, AB and TL. PM and BB wore jackets, TG wore a loose shirt. RF and TL wore waistcoats. Great to see KC on the road again. A magnificent show and I was there. ***************************************************************************** It doesn't matter. He just saw KC at the Royal Albert Hall and had this to say: (if you don't like any negative comments about the band, don't read) It was about 95 minutes, including about 40 minutes of what I would describe as King Crimson 1995's version of Grateful Dead concert "space" - dual drum solos (actually the best part of the space) with a bit of Frippertronics mixed in, and some less welcome offerrings that sounded like Levin and Belew unfinished demos taken to the edge of experimental improvisation. The best track was "Frame by Frame", which isn't my favorite song from Discipline but was the best one they did. Red was good too. Larks came in third. Then Indiscipline, which Bruford and Belew ruined with overstylizing, completely destroying the urgency and volatility of the original. Aside from a reasonable rendering of Elephant Talk, I was crushed that they didn't do any more of Discipline. No Thela Hun, No 'Discipline', No Sheltering Sky. Fripp played straight the whole time, with Belew doing too much of the lead and overdoing the vocals. My response (part of it anyway): When I finally listened CAREFULLY to Thrak, I came away with the impression that the music is terribly IMPATIENT. They are constantly moving from thing to thing, with no patience. This disappoints me. After the beatiful patience and roaring lead Fripp of "Firepower" on Damage -- which is, after all, half of Crimson, Gunn, Mastelleto, Fripp-- Thrak seems impatient --and the mellotron, as much as I love it, seems to me a crutch to hide the inability to settle down-- and Fripp is overly toned down. In fact, though I didn't mention it, after all of the discussion on ET in which I felt like practically the only one criticizing Bruford, now many people's reviews of Thrak on the newsgroup have commented that they find many of the songs brought down by "Bruford tootling around". And yet interestingly, Levin said in the interview that most of the practice time was centered on getting Bruford and Mastelleto to have a sense of division of labor. And so I agree exactly with what you said: the best part was probably what Bruford and Mastelleto accomplished; but on the other hand, Bruford's need to tootle around often turns the music into "space" which doesn't really go anywhere or have a sense of itself. And I'm always disappointed when Belew takes too much of the lead role: for all of the criticisms of Fripp as a dictator, I find him too humble and supportive in the ensemble, where I would like to see him more assertive. I love the group, which is one of the reasons I feel like I can be frank. I hope that is understood. Just my thoughts, Nadav Caine [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: "Chris Savage" Date: Sat, 13 May 1995 15:16:54 +0000 Subject: TICKETS: I have 1 to the Ann Arbor show... On another note, it seems that the arrival of Vrooom and Thrak have brought the vampires out of the woodwork. Given some of the comments from so-called fans ("I'm sooo disappointed..."), it doesn't surprise me that R. Fripp has the attitude toward fans that he does. Some of the comments I've read, particularly those aimed toward Belew and Bruford, verge on flames. Shame on you vampires. I love Thrak for reasons different than I love their previous albums.
