(btw, i'm a GIRL) hi, just a quick anecdote in reply to james.dignan's musings that THRAK sounds like an "Abbey Road II" etc... i had the opportunity to see and hear Adrian Belew at a little club in Milwaukee about 2 years ago... doing a local musician-discussion thing... lucky me.. Adrian lives about 30 miles north of here :-) anyway... he was asked about what he liked to do when R. Fripp was in town, as Fripp has been positively ID'd in the audience at Belew/Bears shows here... i know.. i can testify that the MASTER was there alright! Belew said... that he loved to stay up til 4am with Fripp et al. and sing as many Beatles tunes as they could come up with. and that's a LOT of Beatles tunes, he said. so.. Belew is a self-confessed Beatles junkie. and for Daniel A. Kirkdorffer, who bemoaned the lack of female KC fans... yes, there ARE women who are KC fans... i've been one oh... since... 1980? somethin' like that... i can still rememember trudging through the muddy parking lot at the HUGE record expo at our state fair park to come out again with my first prized LP copy of "in the court of the crimson king" hmmm... i was 15 i think? well.. i clearly remember that i was still a Girl Scout :-) here's looking forward to the KC show in Milwaukee June 15th. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: thomas byran owens Date: Sat, 22 Apr 95 17:02:46 -0400 Subject: THRAK: Belew/Thrak: Double-Drums Salutations! After a couple of weeks of reading ET and another two weeks spent listening to _Thrak_ I felt it time to interject my opinion about this monster of an album. As a whole, I find the album quite enjoyable and amazing. Once again KC has achieved a balance between infectious rock, musical complexity, and pop appealings. The thing that has impressed me the most about the record is the percussion. The interplay between Bruford and Mastelotto is very subtle, but noticeable on VROOOM and it's variations, B'Boom (of course), and especially on the title track. That particular song, I believe, delves into the multi- tempo multi-metred Bruford discussed in the quoted interview a few issues back. The way I see it, by having Mastelotto Bruford is emancipated from the role of time-keeping (a tedious, but necessary job) and is allowed to truly make the trap set an actual instrument. Also, has anyone noticed the strange sound the drums have to them? I wonder if it's merely in the recording or if the drums were treated with an effect, possibly part of the "soundscapes" Fripp is credited with. Any ideas on this? Secondly, the guitar work is quite nice, apealing most to me on "Thrak" (where Fripp [I think?] does a chaotic solo through a pitch-shifter), "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream", "VROOOM VROOOM, coda", and "Walking On Air". I think Belew has done a nice job of coming up with some new guitar critters and overall being much less noticeable, blending in with the ensemble more. And on a final note, for those of you who like Adrian and enjoyed his experimental _Desire Caught By the Tail_ (My third favorite Belew lp after _Lone Rhino_ and _The Acoustic Adrian Belew_), Belew is releasing another experimental instrumental album _The Guitar As an Orchestra_ this summer! It's volume one in a series of guitar albums released on Belew's label, distributed by Caroline, with liner notes by Fripp! Well, thank you for the bandwidth. I enjoy reading all the posts! Thomas Owens P.S. What's the word on a new Fripp/Eno album? A friend of mine said he thought he'd seen an advertisement for it in a rave/techno magazine. I'll keep my opinion short: I think this album is amazing. It's polished, contemporary, rich with surprises. Any doubt I had about the double trio idea has been relieved. The production and distinction between instruments is much cleaner here than on the mini-album. It's good to hear Tony Levin playing the bass. KC needs that low-end sound. What I'm really pleased to hear is that Bill's drums sound like they did back in the seventies, especially his snare. Very tight and hip. On the whole, I'd say Mark IV Crimson _is_ different from the eras before it. It combines the edge they had in the seventies with the technology and trends of today. Palmer-James (or whatever his name was) wrote some good lyrics, but when Belew started writing it became quite bad actually (some exceptions of course, like Indiscipline for example). Brief impressions: 1 VROOOM - Sounds cleaner here than on VROOOM, still reminds me of "Red". 2 Coda:Marine 475 - The "staggered" drum effect sounds much like LTiA II. 3 Dinosaur - Now I know where the "someone's been digging our bones" comment in the CompuServe forum came from. 4 Walking On Air - OK, I had to fast forward somewhere 5 B'Boom - I liked this one - BB is excellent 6 THRAK - Much better than the VROOOM version, seems more structured 7 Inner Garden 1 - At one point, the same chord sequence as ItCotCK ? 8 People - Beatle-esque? Perhaps, but so was "Ladies of the Road" 9 Radio 1 - Interesting, 10 One Time - Again, better and cleaner sound than on VROOOM. 11 Radio 2 - See Radio 1 12 Inner Garden 2 - Again that familiar chord structure, I agree with breaking this up into two songs, though 13 Sex Sleep Eat Dream - The VROOOM version has more energy, of all the similarities people point out, I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the guitar from "We'll Let You Know". 14 VROOOM VROOOM - There is a part in the middle that is just like "One More Red Nightmare". I like this one a lot. 15 VROOOM VROOOM:Coda - Sustained bass note at the end ala LTiA II ("Could I do one more immediately?") All in all a very good KC presentation. I personally love the idea of having more than one version of the same song to listen to. This is also the beauty of the GD Box set. Also, people asking about "whatever happened to..." may be interested in the Frame By Frame Box set, which includes a KC family tree as well as an updated version of the booklet originally issued with the "Young Person's Guide" on vinyl. I just received Tony Levin's "World Diary" CD. This is wonderful recording with Tony playing Stick and bass throughout. The CD is all duos and trios with instruments like the Nyatti, Koto, drums, percussion, sax, Doudouk and vocals. The Stick is featured on 9 of the 13 songs. The CD opens with "Chasms", a duo with Shankar on violin. There is a nice Stick bass ostinato part in G minor. "The Train" has Tony playing his funk fingers electric bass and doing background vocals. Ayub Ogada plays the Nyatti, a 8 string lyre, and doing lead vocals. "We Stand in Sapphire Silence" is a trio of Koto, Taos drums and Stick. This piece starts with a meditative mood and builds as the drums enter. The Stick and Koto blend very nicely together. "Smoke" is a short melancholy duo of tenor sax and Stick. "Etude in the Key of Guildford" has Bill Bruford on Simmons drums and Tony on Stick. This piece has a fast staccato Stick RH part. The drums enter and play a different melodic/rhythmic pattern against the Stick. "Espresso and the Bed of Nails" is Stick with the percussion ensemble Nexus. This has a free form improvisational quality to it. I'm reminded of the music Edgar Varese and the percussion music of John Cage. "Mingled Roots" is a haunting duo of Doudouk (double reed instrument) and electric bass. Tony plays a nice bowed solo in the middle. The piece concludes with the theme played in unison by bowed bass and Doudouk. "Nyatiti" is another duo with Ayub Ogada on Nyatiti and Tony on bass. This song has a fun, uplifting African dance beat. It's one of my favorite pieces on the CD. "Jewels" is a Simmons drums and Stick duo. Tony plays a chordal pattern using a volume pedal while Bill Bruford plays the melody with a marimba-like sound. Then there's a Stick bass chord part using a root, 5th and 10th voicing (hint: it starts on Eb major). "La Tristesse Amoureuse de la Nuit" is a trio of Doudouk, drums and bass with a middle eastern flavor. There's a bass solo in the middle section followed by a return of the theme. "Heat" is Nexus and Stick. Tony sets up a bass ostinato with RH chords and Nexus builds a composition around that. This must have been a fun ensemble to play with. "I Cry to the Dolphined Sea" is a trio of Bendik on saxes, Jerry Marotta on drums and Tony on Stick. Tony achieves a wonderful, singing distorted lead RH sound on Stick in the middle section. I like this song a lot. Great sax by Bendik and drumming by Jerry. "The Sound of Goodbye' is koto and Stick. The piece quietly and peacefully closes out the CD. This is destined to becoming a classic Stick album. The CD is beautifully recorded and has a nice, acoustic, intimate feel to it. The packaging is gorgeous, unique and well thought out. I would recommend this CD to anyone. Thanks for the great music Tony! Here's the ordering info: >> WORLD DIARY CD, avail. only by mail, no orders from outside U.S.(yet.) $15 plus 2.50 p&h (N.Y.
