[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: cohenj at CCMAIL dot tt dot com Date: Wed, 12 Apr 95 14:03:54 EST Subject: Info wanted... Hello To All: I would first like to say that I am so happy that the Thrak tour is coming and I will be a part of it! It seems like years and years since the first mention of KC getting back together for a tour. I am even happier to hear that it is not a one time deal. My age limits my history with KC but I can imagine the emotions that surface for fans that have followed KC since the beginning. I have a few questions/postings. Forgive me if some things have been hashed on-line before. I am new to the group. 1. For anyone who went to the pre-Thrak-tour shows, does anyone have a set list? Were they incorporating any improv sections? How did the double-trio concept work? 2. In Frame By Frame booklet, the last commentary is about the origins of the name King Crimson relating to the term Beelzebub meaning "man with an aim". I ask a friend if he had heard of Beelzebub and he replied, "Ya, that is the Devils right-hand man...(from the Bible)" Is this true and if so am I interpreting the FbF comments incorrectly? 3. Does anyone have extra NYC tickets for the town hall show on Saturday night? I just happen to be taking my vacation there that weekend (imagine that!) and I would like to catch the Sat. night show as well as Sundays. Thanks for any help. *_*_* Jordon , Washington, D.C. *_*_* *_*_* cohenj at ttc dot com *_*_* [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 12 Apr 95 15:58:55 EST From: astarling at octrf dot on dot ca Subject: Impressions of Thrak Hello, Picked up the gold disc version of Thrak last weekend. Was really looking forward to it, as I enjoyed Vrooom quite a bit. All that follows is IMHO so no flames are required. Personally I'll take Vrooom as the love letter -- concise, to-the-point, with a bit of an edge. There's passion in there, and the silver signatures are a nice touch too. Thrak is disappointing. The Vrooom tracks are there, but I find the other tunes to be almost all filler. Or, take Vrooom as the calling card, and for the love-letter choose your favourite King Crimson album from the days when the sound was totally pushing the envelope, and one thing you could expect was to be surprised -- Red for example. Even ToaPP, which seems to be a non-favourite on the list, has wild, absolutely bizarre playing all over it -- even if it was some contractual obligation that gave it life. Someone in the last digest or before, was lamenting the fact that Fripp is not playing out. I totally agree. Slap on Red, or LTiA, or for that matter Damage (Thankfully, that fine document of Fripp's scorching solos exists. Even if you're not a Sylvian fan, pick the album up anyway.) and let the grin spread across your face as you hear some truly marvellous playing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not just looking for frenetic soloing, I enjoy the soundscapes and the quieter moments also. For me, Thrak just doesn't cut it -- I like the Beatles, believe me, but when I hear Crimson coming across like some low-key-psychedelic-adult-radio band then I repeat myself when I'm distressed, I repeat... Another problem is the drum duo. Unimpressive -- I've heard Bruford do way better stuff all by himself -- no need for another drummer. But it's not Mastelloto's fault. What was up with Bill on that track? Pretty subdued really. The final verdict: Thrak is KC light, and although this may be considered beyond the limits of good taste I may in fact be selling this disc in the near future. Vrooom, as it turns out, was all I needed to hear, and I liked it, and will keep it. What I'd like to see: Robert Fripp gets away from the double trio format and goes with a trio, or 4 people at most. Something like Fripp, Bruford, Gunn or Levin, and ask Sylvian again if he might consider joining. All Belew fans please no flames (I saw the Bears in the mid-80's and thought the show was great), however, the entity 'King Crimson' should stay away from the pop sensibilities of Belew. He was great on the 3 albums of the '80s incarnation of the King, but personally I think Crimson would be better served by a change in personnel. Get back to some really experimental non-pop-radio-friendly output. Whatever that may turn out to be. I'm not looking for a return to the past. Just want the ambiguous, somewhat dark, mysterious, and frontier blazing music that I know anything under the name 'King Crimson' is capable of achieving. My opinion... Dig me but don't bury me, (Yeah I know that's a Belew lyric, and a damn fine one) Andrew. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 12 Apr 95 14:06:31 -0700 From: David A. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: William J Jacobs Subject: King Crimson airplay Date: Wed, 12 Apr 1995 23:12:00 -0700 (PDT) I heard "Walking on Air" on two different radio stations today. (109.1 from L.A. and 95.9 from just north of San Diego in case readers in my area want to take a listen.) I liked the song a lot, but I'll spare you all a review. Both of the stations I heard it on have an Adult/Album/Alternative format, not the most popular or common format. Is one of the more hard hitting tracks being released as a single to the hard rock stations and the alternative/grunge stations? How does a small label like Discipline deal with promotion to radio stations? Bill jacobs [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 13 Apr 1995 01:28:55 -0700 (PDT) From: MCNICHOT at cgs dot edu Subject: back again I think there is some amazing Fripp guitar playing on Thrak. There are a couple of short blistering solos that are kind of suprises in spots, so all of you who don't think so, keep listening. Also, I hear some real crafty work in the background of some tunes that is like a little side adventure all to itself. I got some tix for the LA shows so I will get to see and hear for myself. When I saw him rescently, he stood about ten inches from my face and was playing the acoustic with blistering speed and precision, STANDING UP. So, I don't think he has lost his touch by any means. I also think we should start a new page for the Bruford discussion because at this point I am just not reading them.Sorry, MHO. I do like Primus and Sausage, but not for the same reason I like KC and the sunshine slashers. I know they like KC also, but besides the bass, don't reflect much of Robert in their day to day stuff, especially the guitar work. I also think they Butchered Have a Cigar and Making Plans for Nigel. A rather new book here in America( it's from England) has a fairly favorable write-up of the unit in it. It is called,"The Guiness Who's Who of Seventies Music" and is part of a series which resemble encyclopidias It also has Brian Eno and Fairport Convention and has a bunch of B&W's as well as one of KC with Fripp looking like the guy from The Shining. I've been reading through past discipline digests from the archives (this is going to take me a l-o-n-g time; I'm only at number 78!), and I was wondering: are there *only* male KC and Fripp fans? I have yet to read a single posting by any female enthusiasts? I'd be interested in people's thoughts about this, and what it might be saying about the music, or perhaps about the Internet. On a related note, it is quite obvious that most of the readers of this newsletter are musicians (or for example in my case, not a musician but related to one). Again I think this says a lot about the music and its accessibility, or should I say inaccessibility to the commercial music listening public in general (not that there is anything wrong with that of course). Where the musician fans may *feel* that they are more in tune with what Fripp and the band are trying to do, and perhaps appreciate the level of difficulty involved in getting there (mastery of the instruments and the like), I must say that as a non-musician I am more of a lover of harmony and melody, which newer KC offerings may have less of, and is more prevalent in older recordings. As for appreciation of difficulty - hey I can appreciate how difficult this stuff is to play seeing as I have absolutely *no* musical abilities! One does not have to be a musician to like King Crimson, one just has to have an ear for the music. Finally, I was also wondering if anyone has any clue what became of some of the past members of KC. I'm familiar with what most band members went on to do right after KC, and of course the activities of the higher profile contributors, such as Lake and Wetton, but what are these people doing today? Yeah, his "I hate everything especially if it has a uterus" attitude can get to be a bit much, but the fact is, he's an extremely creative artist, he's written some catchy, listenable tunes, and even if the only emotions he works off of are hatred, jealousy, and anger, nobody does it better. No, he isn't the virtuoso messrs. Fripp, Bruford, Levin, et al. are, but virtuosity is not all that music is about. The fact is, when I listen to _The Downward Spiral,_ I'm moved on an emotional level. Yes, I could do without things like "Big Man With a Gun" (nice association between phallic imagery and violence), but things like "Hurt," "Wish," and any number of other tunes paint a vivid picture of an extremely tortured person, and I don't think he should be written off so readily. They have done a couple of very nice LPs, my favourite one being 'Photos of Ghosts' (1972) which features beautiful guitar/mellotron stuff, clearly influenced by KC, and part of it produced by Pete Sinfield. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | Michael Peters CIS 100041,247 | | Postfach 600645, 50686 Koeln, Germany mpeters at ibm dot net | | "Do nothing for as long as possible" (Brian Eno) | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 13 Apr 1995 13:17:05 -0500 From: gtaylor at heurikon dot com (Greg Taylor) Subject: Fripp Plays the Kitchen Date: Sun, 09 Apr 1995 12:46:39 -0600 (CST) From: Z4K42 at ttacs dot ttu dot edu Subject: frippertronics bootleg I was listening to the 1999 soundscapes again, and had the urge to pull out the Eric Tamm book and re-read the section on frippertronics. In that section, he mentions a two lp bootlegg of the first fripp.. concert held at the Kitchen in Soho on February 5, 1978. The bootlegg is reported to be titles Pleasures_In_Pieces. Yes, that's the title. Two LPs, audience tape of a Kitchen performance with Joanna Walton (with whom I believe Robert was involved at the time). There's one piece on the disc that's a 10:40 or so spoken piece w/tape, the rest being Robert. The front cover is a photograph of the corner of a building, looking up. There's very little information. I'd put the disc as a "drooling completists only" job (I was one of those once) job of interest primarily to archivalists - it does include some of Fripp soloing over the 'tronics, which I appreciate. _ I chose the perspectiveless, tall nonsense of God's noise aloft over the jagged parish, thinking everything else was a dream too lonely for words. I like many of you am eagerly awaiting the album, out here on April 25. However it concerns me to read that many of the "new" tracks on THRAK are those that appeared in more or less the same form on VROOOM. I've always been a little shaky as to what the term EP signifies actually, although KC has called it a "mini-album". VROOOM is the best material I think I've heard from Crimson since DISCIPLINE, but I don't want to see them stuck in a rut already--if they're going to rework the tunes, let them do it on stage, as they have many times before. It is possible that the THRAK tracks will erase the ones on VROOOM because they're better arranged, more polished, etc. I guess we won't know until we hear it and judge for ourselves. But VROOOM was 31 minutes and THRAK can't be more than 75; from reviews I've read, it seems that most or all of the EP's tracks are ported to THRAK in some form or another. There had better be lots of new material--that's my only worry. I think it's great that Crimson has Discipline their own label now. I totally agree with their philosophy, and hope they can keep all the money they'll earn. Speaking of the Green end of things, the only drawback to a setup like Discipline possibly is distribution and manufacture. Are they going through Virgin Records? The recent MUSICIAN review said they were, and I'm ambivalent on the matter. With Virgin they'd have distribution muscle, and would have a chance to hit bigger in sales; but does that go against Discipline's ethics? Or was the review just mistaken in its label? I really do think that Crimson will be able to reach a lot more people with THRAK and the tour than ever before. Their appearance on Letterman on May 19 and proper advertising could just perk interest enough. Is their any possibility of a video? Or is MTVs machine something Crimson would rather avoid? Signs point to "yes." Who knows? This isn't the same band, and that's one of the reasons to keep interested in 'em. Pity REM used the title Monster for their last album - that album was a pussycat compared to this behemoth... As countless others have commented, it harks back to Red a lot (which is just fine by me!), with a wide variety of sounds and styles, and cleaner versions of the Vrooom CD tracks (I like all the things going on in the background of Sex Sleep EDD which I never noticed before). I'm a little surprised about the disjointed nature in places though - David McL pointed out, for instance, that Inner Garden would be better as one long piece rather than two short pieces, and I tend to agree. Another concern I have - have King Crimson just released Abbey Road II? People -> I want you; Inner Garden I -> Because; Walking on Air -> Sun King... any other similarities? And the more I listen to it, the more I realise the similarity is not just in Belew... listen to the basswork. VERY Beatlesque. And anyone else see the humour of a group "coming out of retirement" after a break of over a decade, and then singing in their (presumed) first single "I'm a dinosaur..."? :) --- One thing that I'm surprised no-one has brought up before (well, perhaps they have on a Belew list somewhere...) is what sounds to me like a sneaky sample on AB's "Here" album from last year. At the end of the title track - immediately prior to "Brave New World" - is what sounds to me like the ending of "Brave New World" off Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album. Am I mistaken, or is it a nice sneaky juxtaposition? The Here album, BTW, also shows (a) how Beatlesque AB has become (hence my comments about Abbey Road, I suppose), and (b) what he has learnt from Bobby F. Anyway, I saw the following brief editorial in a recent issue of the Wall Street Journal, and thought it might be of at least passing interest to my fellow ETers and TicketMaster users... Jammin' or Jivin'? We're happy to see competition in any field, but the ticket-selling arrangement that the rock group Pearl Jam cooked up to get around TicketMaster Corp. doesn't seem to live up to the billing. You'll recall that congressional hearings and an antitrust investigation followed the musicians' complaint last year that TicketMaster was jacking up prices to hear acts on tour. Turns out that Pearl Jam's new deal will save concert goers less than 10% -- in some cases only a nickel, TicketMaster says. Sounds like it was all a lot of noise without a hit. I do not intend them as truth or as fact, only as my ideas. After listening to Vrooom for a couple of months and reading about what KC is doing live on Elephant talk, I am very disappointed in the new King Crimson. I have admired King Crimson for it's dedication to pushing the bounds of not only rock, but of music in general. The music coming out of the 60's, 70's and 80's has been new and innovative not only for the musicians making the music, but also in comparison to the music that was happening at the time. Examples: the harmonic, rhythmic and formal structure of "Starless" (particulary the rhythmic counterpoint of the 'B' section); the unique group improvisations in "Providence", "No Warning", and "Requiem"; the counterpoint of the guitars in "Discipline"; the extreme chaos of "Indiscipline". This dedication to new music is clearly shown not only in the musics of each group, but also in each group's casting off of the work that the previous group had done. In the cases where old ideas were reused, they were expanded far beyond their predecessors. Even though the rhythmical devices used in "Discipline" came out of some of Mr. Fripp's approach to rhythm in the 70's, the counterpoint of "Discipline" pushes that rhythm further than before. What disappoints me is the lack of innovation in this new formation. Listening to VROOOM, I hear a retreading of old material as opposed to the breaking of new. I find the rhythms and form of "VROOOM" worn out when compared with "Red" or "Fracture". The improvisation of "When I Say Stop, Continue" babbles on rather than forming a coherent piece, and so does not build on "Providence" or "Requiem". "One Time", however sweet it may be, remains a standard form pop song. "Cage", while beginning with some interesting counterpoint in the sticks doesn't break free of the "Discipline". While the new round of digital sounds are interesting in that they are new sounds, as digital sounds they do not do anything new in sound. They are just digital sounds. And in the case of the drum sounds on "One Time", they are poor substitutes for the acoustic. I do hear a new chaos in the crazy section of "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream", but this is watered down by the pop form and pop beat of the song (the bass and the 4/4 drums sound a lot like En Vogue: "Free Your Mind"). And while "Thrak" starts out strong, it doesn't go anywhere. It seems to me that a "calling card" needs to be more articulate and concise than a "love letter", because you're presenting it to someone that doesn't know you rather than to someone with whom you're intimate. I haven't listened to THRAK. I understand it has reworked tracks from VROOOM on it. Maybe they'll be better. I question the integrity of releasing VROOM as a "rough draft". I understand the set includes songs from the 70's and 80's. What relevence do "Heartbeat" and "Matte Kudasai" have in the 90's? Or "Red" for that matter? If anyone would like to discuss these issues further, pleas E-Mail me and we'll set up a time to talk. Thanks for reading all of this. I purchased an import copy of Thrak last week and have been listening to it almost exclusively since. Just a couple of personal observations about Thrak and KC: KC produces music that delights and surprises. Other musicians do so, but none as consistently as the successive incarnations of KC. Having overdosed on VROOOM I was preparing myself for a bit of a let down with Thrak, expecting it to contain somewhat familiar musical territory, but such is not the case. Even the pieces that appeared previously on VROOOM seem more "complete" or "resolved" in their new setting. Thrak is quite the musical experience, the individual pieces contrasting and complimenting one another. KC is greater than the sum of its parts. While I find the solo work of the individual band members (especially Fripp) challenging and inspirational, as an ensemble KC achieves the promise presented by the individual musicians. Often KC is simultaneously discordant and harmonious. While music defines KC, for me KC defines music.
