In this issue, Malcolm Humes makes some good points about the continued ballooning of the list, and the lack of focus that we're experiencing: the same questions (Ian MacDonald! I've just subscribed to this list today so I apologize if I say some things that have been already answered! (I also apologize for my English!) First of all I'm a 33 old fan from San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain. I've a KC fan from 20 years though it is not my current favorite group. Daryl Hall's "Sacred Songs" was in fact a part of the trilogy with RF's Exposure and PG's II Album. But Daryl's record company (RCA) didn't released the album until three years later because of uncommercial matters. The band listed in that album is the usual Hall & Oates Band on that years (Caleb Quaye, Kenny Passarelli, etc.) plus RF on guitar. (BTW if you check Hall & Oates "Along the red ledge" liner notes you'll find a tremendous bunch of guitar players: Robert Fripp, Todd Rundgren, Dick Wagner, George Harrison, Steve Lukather, Rick Nielsen, etc. In some other Hall & Oates records you could find artists like Larry Fast, Jerry Marrota, Chuck Burgi and more..) One thing I liked to ask...is it true ther is a sort of pre-edition of Exposure with Daryl Hall doing all the vocals, not only Burn me up... and North Star? I would PAY for this! What it is STRICTLY correct it is that Robert Fripp asked Daryl Hall to join KC but he resigned because it was 8 years he had been with John Oates and it would'nt have been fair regarding him! > >I've always wondered, is the KC Ian MacDonald the same one who helped form >the band Foreigner? Why must it be the drummer that keeps time? Isn't that such a conventional viewpoint? Couldn't the bass player keep time? Or nobody keeping time and using a metronome instead? In fact, I decided to listen to it again after your post in Elephant Talk. Plus, two of the songs were later on "Exposure." >From Eric Tamm's book, "Robert Fripp:" "...'Sacred Songs", the 1977 ... collaboration, ... represented a major departure from the commercial white soul style for the Philadelphia-born Hall.... Both Hall and Fripp recall the sessions fondly. Fripp... saying, "Hall is the first singer I've met who can sing anything at all they way I ask him." "... According to Hall, "Sacred Songs' "is mostly me and Robert. We did the basic rhtyhm tracks, me on piano and Robert on guitar, and then Caleb [Quaye, guitar], Roger [Pope, drums] and Kenny [Passarelli, bass] came along and played.' ... Hall put it aptly when he saifd, 'When [Fripp] plays it sounds like the universe crying.' " Tracks: Sacred Songs Something In 4/4 Time Babs and Babs Urban Landscape NYCNY THe Farther Away I Am Why Was It So Easy Don't Leave MNe Alone With Her Survive Without Tears Sacred Songs - good vocals by Hall Something In 4/4 Time - the part that I thought interesting was while Hall is singing "Something In 4/4 Time," the background vocals are "two, four, two four," counting out the beat. Babs and Babs - Maybe it's just me, but I'm not too sure if I can accept a song with the name "Babs" in it. This leads into... Urban Landscape: Similar to the Exposure version NYCNY: The music is actually the music from "I May Have Not Have had Enough Of Me, But I've Had Enough Of You." However, there is an extra solo guitar track on the Exposure song. I assume he liked the music so much that he wanted to use it again. The Farther Away I Am: Eric Tamm called it "inexpressibly melancholy." That's a pretty good description. I can't give you all the tracks because I've only re-listened to the first half. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this album. Patriuclarly "Without Tears" stands out in my mind. Mind you, if you're not a Hall & Oates fan, you may have trouble with it. Hall's vocals on Exposure's "North Star," almost sound like a different person in certain spots. It would have been intriguing to hear the song redone in "Sacred Songs," though. Oh well. I have really enjoyed Elephant Talk, and have been an avid Fripp fan since I first heard In the Court album when I was in high school. I've probably never been the same since! I learned about other English bands from listening to KC (like ELP, Yes, Fields, and others). I remeber finding an album by ex-Crimsonites Ian McDonald and Michael Giles, and I wore out two vinyl copies whilst sharing them with my friends (the same thing happened to many of my KC albums as well). I since replaced the KC albums with CDs, but I have been looking to find the McDonald and Giles album on CD, but to no avail. Has anyone seen this released on CD? There has been discussion recently about what path Ian took after KC, but whatever happened to Michael Giles? Also, does anyone remember a band called Fields? I like most projects that Fripp has undertaken. I have great respect for his never ending quest for new paths of musical expression. Want it?" Of course, the first thing I did was check the track list. Basically, everything from VROOOM was included except "Cage" (my favorite track >from the EP) and "When I Say Stop..." (my least favorite track). Then, I noticed the performance credits. Fripp plays mellotron? No stick for TL? I was a little worried until I started listening. I think I liked the intro to VROOOM on the EP better, but the actual song sounded a little bit slicker and not quite as raw, which I liked. To sum up (you guys don't want to read ANOTHER track-by-track review), the VROOOM EP material sounds ten times better here than before (especially "One Time" and "Thrak"), the use of "B'Boom" as an intro to "Thrak" is incredible, and it's the best album I've heard in a while (the last album I got this excited over was Marillion's "Brave" last year). I, for one am delighted that things worked out for him to be involved with Crimson again and I would argue that KC is an (but not the only) ideal vehicle to make use of his skills. I've been a follower of his playing and career for many years, like many of the rest of the readers of this list. I've been fortunate enough to see him in many situations-- - with Genesis (Trick of the Tail tour) - with King Crimson (Three of A Perfect Pair Tour) - with U.K. (first U.K. tour) - with Earthworks (in an outdoor tent!) - with "Bruford" (w/Jeff Berlin, Dave Setwart, etc.) In every one of these instances (except maybe a little less so with Genesis) he has been a focal point for me with his ability to endlessly explore unusual meters and basically play all around the beat without ever losing track of the actual pulse itself. His taste and ability to play the rests as well as the accents is one of the qualities I admire. (Like Fripp credited BB's contribution to the track "Trio": Bill Bruford --admirable restraint). Another reader on this list referred to his "childlike" approach to playing and this too is a charming quality. Bill's quote from the Paiste News (in the last E-T): >"Then there's metric modulation, illusion and superimposition, the sort of >thing Trilock and Gavin Harrison are demons at. Two metres on top of each >other, one at a faster pulse than the other, wheels within wheels, big and >slow, light and fast - oh yes folks, we've tackled it all one way or >another at Real World in the past few weeks. How about assigning timbres? >He gets the wood, you get the metals. He gets the high drums, you get the >low...and so it goes on." To me this represents a total musical approach to a band like KC (which has consistently attempted to break new ground ever since the "Court" days) that really fits with RF's intentions and the "don't play anything you've heard before" attitude. How wonderful it must be to have another percussionist in the band so that his role doesn't get reduced to merely keeping time. I am most looking forward to seeing them again in Minneapolis on June 16. (20th row!) One last thing: I saw a Japanese import of "Thrak" in a store this week, but they were asking $38 for it so I had to pass. It'll be out in a couple more weeks, so I'll have to wait. But my curiosity still gets me -- how is the Japanese edition in comparison with other releases? Is there anything unusual or especially collectable about it? There are actually many different places that Fripp plays tasty passages in the 80's, IMO; you just have to know where to look. Try: - The intro to Larks' Tongues Pt. III - The solo to "Requiem" - The outbursts from "Neil and Jack and Me." - Sartori In Tangier, live and studio For starters. Some of the live versions of Indiscipline (where Adrian plays drums with Bill, which is the Beat tour, I think...) give some real good solos by Fripp. Also, try some of his work on Sylvian and Fripp. There is a good deal of soloing on there, too, it's just not pushed to the foreground. The biggest problem is that, with a second guitarist, the workload has to be split up between the two of them. If Fripp tried to pull a 10 minute solo, it would be unfair to the other members. Crimso is, was and always be a cohesive group effort. >Chris Squire on bass... With the direction he has been going w/ Yes, I don't think his playing would add to Fripp's playing. Walking on Air -- Cause it is a beautiful song that has the music and lyrics in total harmony. 3. People -- Cause it rocks, it got a hook with a touch of menace. 4. That is the only show I could really have gotten to. I'd like to know if anyone knows if KC is going to Phoenix or not. I've heard some rumors but I don't know. I'm fairly young (22), so I've never seen KC before. I've been listening to them since about '88 or so when my brother introduced me to them. I did get to see Adrien Belew last summer, which was amazing, but I need to see KC. Also, when is Thrak coming out in America? I don't really want to spend the money on a foreign copy. And is KC going to tour any more after these dates that are already posted? Some other questions: How is Sunday All Over The World? (Fripp's project from around '91). Also, James MacKenzie Crawford asked if the Ian McDonald of Foreigner was the same guy from early KC. The answer is yes, and if you remember a couple of the songs from their first album (Long Long Way From Home was one) there are some nice sax and flute parts that made the tunes (dare I say) decent. I actually went to see them way back in the days of my youth in large part to see Ian, and because of him it was a pretty good show (he did a flute solo, as I recall, which was very cool). I read in some mag that he showed up to record the second album at an agreed-to time and no one else was there. Classic Keys has mellotron samples (which is kind of perverse since the mellotron is just a sampler itself), built-in effects and is somewhat cheaper than the Vintage model. It's definitely cheaper than a real mellotron and there's no tape rack to deal with. I know there are some purists out there, but the mellotron was just a sampler anyway, so I guess a sample of a sample is no worse. Classic Keys has two basic string mellotron sounds in a bunch of different configurations, some flutes, and a host of male and female choruses (a la Genesis). Just don't hold the notes for more than eight seconds and you'll get a nice emulation of the real thing. The unit also does a good job with Hammond organs and Moog lead waves, among others. I have always been a big fan of the Mellotron, and it is very nice to hear that it is back again in Crimson. The Mellotron sound is really very hard to emulate on a digital synthesizer, but I have tried to do it on my Korg X5, and I think with some success. At least the sound I have produced is similar enough to make other people respond "Ah.. Mellotron". To make the sound I doubled the string sample with a difference of one octave. and adjusted the levels (A lot of the low strings, and not too much of the high strings). The Attack and Decay must be very sharp, emulating the ups and downs of the tape heads. The other important thing is to cut off some of the real high frequencies, as they sound very digital. Finally, you may throw in a randomizer on the pitch, as the old tapes where not very stable when the sound was played. This randomizer is really what makes the difference. I just got THRAK today and have only listened to it one time, but I figured I could share my opinions with you anyway. I've only listened to it with my AKG-headphones so I don't know how it sounds with real speakers, but so far I'm a bit disappointed with the opening of the album. The first track is VROOOM and although it's at least as good as the previous version (that means like 10/10 pts), I think the production or should I say mixing does damage to it. (maybe this was just because I used headphones.) Here, the trios are completely separated sound-wise and you can clearly hear what they're all doing but it doesn't flow and the power doesn't transmit as good. For such a rockin' track (if that word is allowed here) that kind of mixing doesn't work IMO. They should have separated the trios just a bit, this I wanted because I'd like to here the double-trio concept developed. Apart from this it's excellent. The next real stand-out song is in fact all the following: Dinosaur, Walking On Air and the one after that, which got a real scary feel to it. The production on these is crisp-clear and heavy. And then there's THRAK which is a lot more graspable, it's not just a wall of evil sounds. Very, very good! I reckon that you could lump together the next tracks and listen to it as a whole, I'll do that as soon as I finished with this! Something like: inner garden I people radio I one time radio II inner garden II or am I just thinking too much in terms of computer-programming? =:-x Anyway, One Time is more and more getting to be one of my fave-songs of all time, it's a bit slower than the previous one and it's got a new middle-section. Sex Sleep...is quite similar to the one on VROOOM, still good! The polyrythmical stuff sounds better here. And then my favourite which just blew me away: VROOOM VROOOM w/ coda. That one right away got into my top-5 Crimson-tracks, the production makes this one come across a lot better. It is extremely good, with more theme-developing than the first one. One thing that I reckognised is a small drum-thing that's right off the old track (or thrak :-)) Red. It's the part of one of the riffs where at the end the drums are a bit behind. It's very hard for me to describe it but I though that was a direct link when I heard it! Go listen for this, it's in the middle somewhere I think. There is also a small section with melodic interplay between basses/sticks/guitars, I wanted more of that. A lot of the time the bass is all the way down at the bottom (like it's supposed to be in normal music) but I like harmonic interplay so maybe a little more of that would have made me even happier! (Ooops, long post!) Although when talking about Crimson it's hard to rank stuff, it's all so good in so many different ways, but as for now I would say for personal taste, this was right on the spot for me! I'd say it's a definite must for 'everyone'. If I only had the latest YES, ELP or Genesis-albums I would go put them on and laugh probably, (feeling the flames!), cause I think while this is vital, progressive rock (progressive meaning innovative etc here) their old companions are just shadows of their former selves, (quote from Wired (about VROOOM)). If I got to write it a review in a magazine I would give 9,5 out of 10 (or 5/5). Fripp I think originally worked with Cunningham on a Flying Lizards release (The Fourth Wall?), and I'm pretty sure the track on Water featuring Fripp is actually using deconstructed samples of Fripp from the prior sessions; I think that the liner notes credite it as such, and while the track and the whole cd are quite nice it's not very apparently Frippy. Still, as the original post suggested, the entire Made to Measure series on Crammed, of pseudo and real soundtracks, is of exceptionally high quality and worth exploring. Re: Jamie Muir being a dangerous dude Yup, one has that impression, probably largely fostered by some story by Fripp of just barely avoiding being smacked by a chain Muir was swinging onstage once. Muir's brief role with the band seems to me to have served as a catalyst for the period of heavy improvisation KC explored in the mid 70's. Muir had worked previously with grand-daddyof the UK impov scene, Derek Bailey, and Muir also had a brief stint with an unrecorded band called Sunship, with Allan Holdsworth and Alan Gowen in 1971, a band one can only assume would have been incredible just from the sum or the players, all just before the peaks (arguable, I suppose) of their respective careers musically. That band crumbled as Muir left. Muir left King Crimson, supposedly for a Monestary or with a broken leg. Later he recorded again with Bailey, and since retired from music to express himself via painting. Muir's conspicious abscence from the Great Deciever box is curious, especially with the cover image being a fair likeness of him. One can only ponder why he seems to have been erased from the period of the band he seems to have played a strong role in provoking. ET seems to have gotten a bit out of sync lately. I'd like to propose we reformat the list into a number of new digests, representing the diverse interests of the audience. 1) the tour digests, for questions about venues, anguish over gaps in geographic coverage, the inevitable 4-5 or more reviews of each concert, etc. 2) the sale list, for official and unoffical hawking of products, cds, tickets, etc. 3) the subjective quality list, for the arguments over musicianship, whether Thrak or Vroom sucks compared to (insert title here), who's a better drummer. 4) corrections, retractions, who really played on what, etc. 5) questions, and answers... with a copy of the FAQ appended at the top of each installment. Hopefully Toby will have the time to keep up with all these. :^) To make it easier to sub-categorize the various postings for inclusion in the correct list we could devise a set of subject header codes to automate this. Seriously folks, the noise level here is out of control, the number of same answers to questions, whining, merchandising and a general lack of content in a lot of the posts to the list has, in my opinion, nearly killed the value this list had for a long time as one of the most informative and least noisy mailing lists I've been on. 1200 lines a week would be almost readable if much of it wasn't saying the same thing or almost nothing. Consider what you're trying to say and your audience before you post, please, and consider using other forums such as alt.music.progressive if what you seek is a just a chatty zone. Usenet at least allows and encourages replies to questions to not be entirely redundant. It's apparently about time to start an alt.music.king-crimson newsgroup to leech off some of the infecting babble. Just wait till the tour really gets underway. I thought they'd take longer). Unfortunately, we didn't get any of the gold-plated limited edition here, but that's what you get for living so far away from the action. My impressions after a couple of listenings is that THRAK is a VERY good KC album! Maybe not quite as good as something like Red, but tantalisingly close in places. There's certainly plenty of variety on it, from the almost schmaltzy "Walking On Air" to the brutality of "THRAK" to the outright weirdness of "Radio I" (sounds like Dr Who sound effects!) "Inner Garden" (both versions) was a real surprise, reminding me of an early-period KC quiet song. I wish, though, that it had been one longer song instead of two short ones. I found the mellotronic interlude in "Dinosaur" a bit off-putting as it breaks the song up too much, but I may change my mind after some more listenings. But there's certainly nothing on the album that I actively dislike! Favourite track? Probably "VROOOM VROOOM" at this stage ('72-'74 KC bias showing through here!), though I didn't like the long gap to the Coda. This will probably be my Album of the Year.
