On the one hand, it kind of strikes me as a little weird. That is, he left Yes at the pinnacle of their popularity (right after Close to the Edge). Even now, 22 years later, Yes fans still harken back to the ABWHS line-up as the greatest ever. So, what did Bruford trade this success in for? KC! A band that has never, and will never, attain the critical or financial prosperity that Yes has, even today. On the other hand, though, I would honestly have to say that Bruford's stint with Yes was but a warm-up for KC. The stuff he's done with Yes is great, but he has fully blossomed with KC. If fame and money are your concerns, then Bruford made a stupid choice. But, if artistic progress is your concern, then Bruford made a brilliant choice. Yes has continued to prosper with the competent Alan White, and Bill Bruford has become as indispensible to KC as Robert Fripp himself. And we, the fans, get the best of both worlds. Just some thoughts..........................John [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 4 Mar 1995 10:27:25 -0600 From: vinsold0 at seraph1 dot sewanee dot edu (Duncan Vinson) Subject: No shows in southern US?? People often wonder about musicians who choose to do this; for example, Mick Fleetwood has said about Lindsey Buckingham's recent work something to the effect of, "It's good, but I sure wish he'd play with other musicians..." However, as a songwriter and musician, I'd like to submit that this kind of one-man-band playing can be very stimulating. There are fewer distractions -- you don't have to worry about the other players being late, being drunk, not knowing the songs, etc. It's more intimate. It's more focused, and yet at the same time it allows for a lot of freedom to follow one's own inclinations. Especially in the case of Adrian (or, for example, Todd Rundgren), when the one-man-band is capable of playing all of the instruments LIVE effectively (as opposed to drum machines or sequencers), it can be a very good approach. Adrian has, at least, been wise enough to keep himself in band situations in addition to his solo stuff, to keep a balance (again, rather like Rundgren - Utopia...) of introspection and interaction. Oh, well, just felt like spouting off (and, hopefully, clarifying...). Take care. I just took a look through the whole thing up on the website and couldn't find this listed: "Perspectives And Distortion" (compilation), 1981, Cherry Red Records Fripp has a track called "Remorse Of Conscience" (3:10) described as follows: 'Remorse Of Conscience' was improvised and recorded live in two passes before the cameras of Bournemouth College film department at Arny's Shack in Parkstone, Dorset during March 1981. The documentary was directed by Chris Harvey. Anyone ever see this film? The rest of the compilation has some of the more interesting progressive/experimental UK people from the time, including Matt Johnson, Virgin Prunes, Lol Coxhill (!), Lemon Kittens, Eyeless In Gaza, Kevin Coyne, Thomas Leer, Morgan-Fisher, A. Tent and a few others. Liner notes say this is "another in the series of its predecessors," which I assume means other Cherry Red compilations like the great "Miniatures." 3) Picked up a used copy of "Show Of Hands" today. I knew this existed but I've never seen it (or any other Crafty Guitarists releases, other thaqn "Live" which I also bought used at the same store) for sale anywhere. I love the quiet spiritual content of some of these pieces; a very welcome counterpoint to the "till your ears bleed" bombast of a lot of King Crimson performances. Hell, that time I saw them in Central Park in '74 still rings in my ears as the loudest concert I've ever witnessed. 4) I never thought there would be a connection between KC fans and "Get Smart." Needless to say, I rushed over to the campus box office and bought some tickets. I had assumed that he would be playing with a small group; boy, was I wrong. It turned out to be Larry Coryell solo, ie, all by his lonesome. Although the venue was very intimate (The Backdoor at SDSU), I felt somewhat let-down that we weren't going to see him jam with others (I really like the Coryell/Brubeck Bros live-in-the-studio LP), however, as soon as the show began I completely forgot any of that crap, and by the time it was over I was thoroughly pleased and most satisfied. I ended up seeing some of the most amazing guitar work I had ever seen, and if there were other musicians there, I would not have been able to focus my attention on one person. I have since seen a few more (entirely) solo performances, and have always been pleased. I still relish the interaction and improvisational grooves you get with multiple musicians (I have always preferred jamming with others to pratcing solo), but I can't say that I haven't enjoyed (and learned from) the *solo* performances. Some people may need control, others just some *space* to work in. When you're on the fringe, it can sometimes be difficult to relate your concepts, ideas, etc, to others (I've found this to be the case, from personal experience). Sometimes you just need to get away, even from long-time friends and partners. KC fans are the greatest people on earth and I would think twice before abusing them in any way. But I do wish the people extolling Earthbound would think twice before trying to interesting anyone in an album best forgotten. Trouble signs? You want trouble signs? Earthbound was recorded in America, [A] with an inferior version of the band, [B] in the year of Nixon's re-election, [C] on cassette, and [D] issued in a B-grade Island budget series [E] without any artwork aside from a basic black jacket with the band name and album title. [F] It was the last album to bear Fripp's name atop the lineup, as if he were saying in all future albums, I once tried this bandleader thing and it didn't quite work out. [G] It has never been issued on CD, for reasons obvious to anyone who has actually heard it, and [H] was not issued in America even on LP (except as a probably unauthorized import). Even if you spot a used copy in the bargain bin for 99 cents, it's still not worth it. The only reason I haven't sold or given away my copy is that I really do respect Crimso fans and don't want to bum anyone out. So don't even ask. By containing this crypto-musical equivalent of nuclear waste, I serve humanity. Earthbound started life as a live album based on the tour Crimson undertook to promote Islands. The surprisingly pastoral spirit of that carefully controlled studio creation is nowhere in evidence on Earthbound. Nor is the studio polish; Earthbound has to be the worst-recorded live album ever, with no high frequencies, a recessed midrange, and a drum sound that would cause concussion were it not as truncated by the cassette format's limitations as all other sounds (remember, this was 1972). The live album starts with a slobbering "Schizoid Man" and goes inexorably downhill from there. Fripp compositions "The Sailor's Life" and "Groon" are recognizable but end in excruciating Ian Wallace drum solos, the former mercifully faded out, the latter--ahem--enhanced by sound man operating a distorting signal processor. Wallace's abuse of his kick drum should have been an indictable offense; he literally takes any Crimsonian melodic delicacy that might have entered the music and beats it dead. Worse yet are "Peoria" and the all too aptly named title track, a pair of aimless jams that show this King Crimson for what it was: a mediocre blues band with Fripp imprisoned within it like a seal mired in the Exxon-fortified Prince William Sound. Oh, how he tries to play guitar, and the very familiarity of that instrumental voice is admittedly stirring for very few isolated moments. But to hear him under these conditions--debased and depressed--is like watching a loved one being beaten senseless. Why did Fripp release this atrocity? Perhaps a contractual commitment hung over his head and this was the only way he could get it behind him and concentrate on the next King Crimson. Perhaps he saw it as an opportunity to show the world how bad this King Crimson was, how its members isolated him, how much he hated the whole thing and himself for participating in it. If that was the intended gesture, it is not one that has stood the test of time--hence the album's absence from any KC CD bin I have ever inspected. Out of bad things come good things. Fripp would soon disband this ill-advised Crimson and rethink the band entirely. The result was a new band, a new dynamic, and Larks' Tongues in Aspic. The core of the band that recorded Larks' Tongues also proved to be a fairly enduring live performer, with a genuine flair for improvisation. True, substituting the shy David Cross on violin for the aggressive Mel Collins on sax left the later KC a tad unbalanced. But the KC of the early to mid '70s soared above the ashes of Earthbound, so at least this sad story has a happy ending. I have too much admiration for Fripp to recommend this album to anyone. Perhaps it is rash for me to attempt to speak for him, but I think he has spoken loudly with his actions. He has not re-released this album. Respect his wishes. King Crimson is my favorite band, but unlike the author in #170, I don't feel any urgent desire to offer them any more money than the purchase price of their CD's or concert tickets. To me, Robert Fripp and the boys are extremely talented musicians, doing their jobs well, and are likely well compensated, as the best usually are in a capitalist system. If they price their work too high, KC will sell less CD's, and likely introduce fewer new fans (why shell out big bucks on a 35 min EP you might not like?) That's their problem. If we fans buy VROOOM and think we overpaid, its our problem. Let's not hold KC up on some teen idol pedestal. I don't see anything wrong with fans giving some feedback on a EP that's a little pricey. After seeing the League of Crafties in Houston, and missing the chance to join in on crafty lessons in Austin, I am indeed very upset that Crimson is not scheduled to play in Texas. Through the years, I have collected every Crimson release on cd, and while a poor college student, cannot just jump on an airplane to fly hundreds of miles away to see one of my all time favorite bands. They aren't even playing anywhere close. I pray that new dates are added, or this will indeed be one very disappointed, sad, frustrated fan. (NDW and MFTCC are australian groups) b) more relevant to us, is a distint _Islands_ sound. The vocals sound very similar and ther is some flute which every now and them i am sure is going to break into an island's track. the sound is similar in the mellow jazz rock sort of way. is there anything about the group (other than getting fripp in) which would suggest a fripp influence? and am i way off beam in hearing any resemblences. First I suspected the fault is in my old Pioneer, since I coudn't see any damage on the disc itself. But it's the same on all the CD-players I've tried. The store won't replace it as I didn't keep the receipt and it was such a long time ago they don't remember, etc, and anyways they don't have any replacements. Now I've come to believe it is some kind of disc manufacturing error. Or maybe the damn disc is just too long for some machines (hey - that's why they made VROOOM just a bit over half an hour short, so even I could play it, thanks. 8-) Well, I'm totally Starless and Bible Black on this...any suggestions what I should do now? Date: Wed, 8 Mar 95 21:28:19 EST Hello ET, In the Peter Gabriel list a guy spoke of an upcomming interview in the Yes newsletter with Tony Levin where he was going to talk about his solo album and stuff. Did anybody else hear of a possible solo effort? If this is true I can't tell you how long I've waited for this. Maybe our friend in the music industry that gave us the scoop on the cover art and release date for Thrak could check this out. I guess I should just wait but this could be wonderful. Everytime I speak with my cousin about music we always ask why Tony hasn't released a solo CD oooooohhhhh the possibilities - Jean [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] ----- ADMINISTRIVIA ----- ** POSTINGS Please send all postings to Toby Howard, at toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk. ** SUBSCRIPTIONS/ADDRESS CHANGES USA subscribers: please contact Ken Bibb at elephant-talk-request at arastar dot com.
