And Who's not the Team-Player? Date: Fri, 17 Feb 1995 11:15:40 -0800 (PST) In the last issue in the Fripp/Summers interview, Fripp says two things: 1. About KC: RF: There are tapes of a live album to be mixed in February. Excuse me, but is this something we all know and love which has slipped my mind, or have we been deprived of live KC? This would break my heart, because the live KC for the Beat and 3' Tours was superior to the albums, as Fripp has often said that albums should be recorded after tours since the music is honed. Just listen to some of the Waiting Man's (e.g. Greek Theater) and 'nuff said. Anybody know what Fripp meant here? 2. Fripp says that new-KC team "aim" was only approached in '81, but elements in the band after that were more intent on using the group as a vehicle rather than as an end in itself. I don't mean to get personal and finger-point, but I can't imagine he could ever mean Levin (the ultimate humble team-player), Belew always *seemed* to me to be humble and a hard-worker, which leaves the dubious (at best) reputation of Bruford. At the risk of getting flamed (please be kind), I must state that I would have had him replaced by someone else. (IF getting Adrian to play drums on the 3' tour wasn't enough for him to get his karma in the right place, to heck with him). I wonder why they didn't do this --get Marotta or someone. As essentially a live band, King Crimson's music is constantly evolving this way. I have a bootleg of the first concert ever by the band that later recorded "Larks Tongues" and it is very revealing in this respect (although the sound quality is almost unlistenable). They played long instrumental jams which contain chunks of material that later turned out to be included in songs like "Exiles", "Lament", and even "Fallen Angel" which didn't show up until two albums later on "Red." And, keep in mind, this concert happened months before they had even recorded "Larks Tongues In Aspic." Even after they release an album, the material continues to evolve and transmutate, as "The Great Deceiver" and various bootlegs bear witness to. This, indeed, is what makes their bootlegs so jamming and interesting. It's easy to see why they like to tour first before recording. Also, music is usually more powerful and immediate in live performance. Compare any live version of any song from "Beat" with it's album version, and the live version will wail over the record. After hearing "Waiting Man" from "The Noise", I find the version on the album unlistenably boring. Steven Arthur suggested that the Lounge Lizards would make a good opener for KC ... they opened for them in 1981 while the band was still called Discipline. If I'm not mistaken, Lounge Lizards shared the bill on Discipline's debut gig. Also, that mystery track at the beginning of the "Vrooom" CD is from the title track of "1999" by Fripp. (In case anyone was wondering.) Bye... The first couple minutes are "clean," but after the real heavy electronic "explosion" sound, everything is electronically distorted in some way until the sax comes back in. Most of it is clearly drums, although other instruments may be in there, too. Artists like Sarah McLachlan and_Alice in Chains_are among the first to release CD Plus discs. The beauty of _CD Plus_ is that you can access artist boigraphies, lyrics, music videos, etc. For example, on the first _CD Plus_ disc released on Arista entitled_The Freedom Sessions_by Sarah McLachlan will include video interviews with her and the band, and additional music clips and videos from previous albums. _CD Plus_is expected to cost between $20 and $27 (US) and will be released simultaneously with an audio CD release for those not interested in the _CD Plus_technology. So now the question is... Are Robert Fripp and King Crimson tailor-made for this avenue of expression? I think so. And could a_CD Plus_of_THRAK_or a re-release of_Frame by Frame_in_CD Plus_format be on the horizon?? Maybe it could include video clips from South American concert dates, interviews will Fripp and the boys, and maybe even a montage of Tony Levin's latest photos!! It was very enlightening to know the mindset of Fripp & Summers (two of my favorite guitarists) at the time. The one question I have about it is this: Fripp mentioned tapes of a live album which were to be mixed. What happened to this live album? Was Fripp so burned out with Crimso that he wanted nothing to do with the live album? Or what? On the furor of Fripp's editing Starless: I think most fans are in agreement that they should have not cut the song (or LTIA Pt. 1, for that matter... but I digress...). But you have to remember what that particular box set was for: basically, it was to give people with a passing interest (at the least) reason to start listening to Crimso. After obtaining the box set, perhaps some of those people who had not heard a huge amount of Crimson would go back and get the other CDs. By using the word "ESSENTIAL," Fripp was not saying that the other tracks were bad, but this willgive people a taste of what the band was like at the time. On "The Great Deceiver" box set, he had said he realized that he erred by editing some of the songs. This is why he presented the Providence show in its entirety. In that same vein, I am surprised that there is so much fervor in trying to find the "USA" CD. All of the tracks (except "Asbury Park") were taken from the Providence show that is on the GD Box Set. And Asbury park is on "Frame By Frame." I understand the search for earthbound, since it's out of print. And if Mr. Fripp had released box sets from the other live eras, people wouldn't be so hungry for more. Reprinted without permission. Sticking to his Gunns (Picture of Trey with his 12-string Stick) After years of studying piano, bass, and guitar, Trey Gunn made a risky leap seven years ago: he purchased a Chapman Stick. In an attempt to find an instrument that would appease his insatiable musical appetite, the Stick - with its unique requirement for right-handed tapping - seemed the appropriate one. "I had been fascinated by the instrument for years. Being mostly a bass player, whenever I played guitar, the things that your hands idiomatically do are really blues-based," he explains. "With the Stick, I could go beyond that." Picking up the Stick unexpectedly posed a plethora of problems. "When I finally did play the Stick, everything about it was scary," confides Gunn, who owns two, both of which he tunes in 5ths. "But everything that I was trying for years to do on the guitar and piano was actually meant for this instrument. The way that I look at it is that I spent 15 years preparing to play it." Gunn's virtuosity eventually led him to work with Brian Eno, Toni Childs, David Sylvian, and Robert Fripp - most of whom had also worked with Stick virtuoso Tony Levin. Last year, Gunn released an agressively atmospheric solo album, "One Thousand Years" (Discipline), and also joined King Crimson to record the group's eagerly awaited full-length release, "Thrak" (Virgin). Where he once felt musically stifled, Gunn finds the Stick's 12 strings and multitude of frets and tunings provide him with almost too many creative possibilities. "The Stick's potential is entirely mind-boggling! Even after seven years, I still feel that way," he says with amazement. "Since the Stick has only been around for 20 or 25 years, the playing is still quite primitive. There's no real body of technique, or a consensus of any way that instrument should be played. It's going to take 50 years before we have a master player. I've only just scratched the surface." - Darren Ressler BTW-I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to LTIA, and what an album it is! I wholeheartedly agree with this, it's something I've felt with several solo musicians. (Notably: Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Adrian Belew, David Gilmour and several others.) The feeling is that: this isn't at all bad, it's actually quite OK. The problem is that it seems so utterly insignificant compared to what these people have done within a group. It's not like with Phil Collins, whose solo work I simply detest, or with Peter Gabriel, whose solo work I feel is an improvement over Genesis. (Besides, Gabriel's solo work could hardly be said to be without "the feedback of other musicians", and I think that is part of the reason why it is so much better (IMHO!) than that of the other solo'ers I've mentioned.) This actually makes me wonder WHY they go on playing solo. Is it because it's easier and more convenient, not to be troubled with the (possibly differing) meanings and intentions of other musicians? Did anyone here get to catch these early shows? What was the light show like? Are there any special videos out there from this period? -hint-hint- Memories from those who went to shows 69-74 would be great to hear about... The music is very epic, agressive and experimental, performed by the Geinoh Yamashirogumi ensemble. Some of the percussive effects and textures reminded me of KC, not to mention Sylvian. It's sorta hard to find, but some thorough record stores have it. Otherwise, you could try ordering it (I think it's manufactured for the US by JVC) from a music shop or shop that would sell animaes, role-playing games, and similar paraphenalia.
