My apologies for the delay in getting this issue out. I'm back on-line after a few days off, when all our machines here were disconnected, so the Computer Room floor could be rebuilt -- it had collapsed under the weight :-) Luckily our wonderful systems people somehow managed to archive all incoming email during that period, so I haven't lost anything. -- Toby [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 4 Jan 95 13:43:09 EST From: nobody at Kodak dot COM (John Reilly) Subject: Discography question I was wondering if anyone was aware of a _complete_ discography containing all the known appearances of everyone that ever played with KC. A bold request indeed. Mark Charig and Keith Tippett could probably fill a computer disc themselves. In recent digest's I noticed some references to KC's reunion and lack of publicity, the possible need for a hit single on their upcoming release, perhaps MTV exposure and so on. If I recollect while growing up with KC, ELP,Yes, Genesis and the the lot, KC were popular and many of their releases made the charts to some extent. Also, they generally sold out (tickets) when playing different venues in NYC. In those days I lived and breathed KC and studiously followed their every move. Basically, Do we really want KC to be on MTV ? I think public television or perhaps one of those artsy cable tv stations would be more appropriate. Suppose they did bang out a hit single. Most people would more than likely be decieved. They would buy the CD and other than the so called-pop song-would be disappointed and confused upon hearing the true KC compositional style/sound. Unfortunately, many jazz, jazz/fusion, (I'm not talking Kenny G. here) advanced rock recording artists never make the charts any more. This music must continue to take it's own course. If everyone sold out, I think I would sell my stereo equipment tommorow. I trust that Fripp and the gang are not broke and aren't doing this for the money. I would think that they are wise enough to realize these things beforehand. At least I hope....Long live artistic expression ! Kilpatrick" (Mr. Breeze) In the interview posted in the last Elephant Talk (what has tht interview been up to for the last 15 years, anyhow?), Fripp talks about his opposition to bootlegging. I thought that this was a rather uniquely & strongly put approach to the subject. Is Fripp's personal opinion on bootlegging at all related to what seems to me to be the relative dearth of King Crimson bootlegs? I have only seen around 15 or so, what I consider a tiny number related to the length of the career of Fripp/Crimson. By contrast, there are hundreds if not thousands of Bob Dylan bootlegs available, from all aspects of his career with no slowdown in recent years. I would have thought that for sure there would have been bootlegs of the recent Crimson shows in South America, seeing as it is new material and the beginning of a new King Crimson lineup. (Though possibly there are some available in South America or somewhere and they haven't made it to anywhere where I would see them.) Does Fripp do anything special to prevent bootlegs from being made? I am cynical about a cynic who who uses his extensive fan base to pull in a bit of extra cash to cover the cost of rehersals by releasing an expensive minialbum. (Although this is not the first time - there is the minialbum of edited versions which came out with frame by frame (which was full price here (australia) at least) and the $4 premium for autographed copies) Any comments? Regrettably, I've had the same impressions myself. This was particularly the case when purchasing a copy of the Essential King Crimson Boxed Set to discover how many of the songs (most notably 'Starless') were hacked to pieces in the obvious interest of marketability(?). What was the purpose of this anyway? I really thought Fripp would be the first person to refuse the reproduction of any of his work unless it was presented in the most dignified form; just having the thing in it's entirety seems like an obvious prerequisite and not much to ask for. And then to have a million "abbreviated" compilations follow, all with marvelous packaging, admittedly (the "powers that be" obviously couldn't skimp on that at all), but having the same massacre-editing problem and really just being an insult to real KC fans. I question all of this, as would any consumer, even though it doesn't heighten my cynicism enough to disregard my enjoyment of the music. It's just interesting to note that Fripp in all his high ideals and integrity about music and his skepticism of the music business in general is still a slave to it, no doubt, and all of any musician's rantings of how they're liberated from it all does not preclude the fact that it pays their living and profits must be maximized. I suppose that even Fripp's a player in more ways than one. Yeah, come to think of it I do have a right to be pissed at paying $17 for VROOOM cause I wanted it so bad and it wasn't on sale anywhere. Why does Fripp have to be so good? Someone's gonna pay for this. Thanks for the thought-provoking message, Jeremy. After hanging out in line for several hours, we noticed that some people were walking in ahead of us prior to the opening of the doors. We then found out that the situation was exactly as Fripp describes above. Needless to say, those of us in line were outraged and began causing a commotion (my friends and I began chanting "Death to the Johnny come latelies!" - well, it was funny at the time). Fripp heard this and came outside to talk to the audience to see what the fuss was about. When he found out, he was equally upset. By the way, this was a marvellous Frippertronics show. I believe some of the show ended up on vinyl. I'll have to re-check my liner notes. Madame Wong's was primarily a punk/new wave club. Next door was the Hong Kong Cafe, which also hosted this type of music. The two clubs had a bitter rivalry. Bands that played the Hong Kong Cafe were barred from playing Madame Wong's (and probably vice-versa). Graham Parker wrote a song about this (whose title I have forgotten) on one of his albums from that time period. *************************************************************************** David A. I've seen a couple of notes here about Sweedish groups Anglagaard and Anekdoten. I just saw both groups perform at ProgFest '94 in Los Angeles. These groups are Crimson derivatives, trying to take early Crimson music in a direction that KC chose not to go. Anglagaard sound like "Court of the Crimson King" blended with "Starless and Bible Black", mixed with Genesis's "Trespass" and "Nursery Crime". They are a six piece band consisting of Drums, Guitar, Bass, Guitar/Vocal, keyboards, flute/mellotron. The keyboards are mostly mellotrons (two on stage and in-tune with each other!!) and organ. One of the guitarists styles himself after Fripp, the other sounds more like Hackett (maybe). While their first cd sounds very much like King Crimson, their second is branching out and is more sophisticated. (That is, less derivative, more original.) Anekdoten are unrepentant Crimson fans. They sound like a mix of "Wake of Poseidon" with "Red", heavy on the "Red". They appear to be uninfluenced by anything else. This is very aggressive music. A four piece, Anekdoten are Drums, Bass/Vocals, Guitar/Mellotron/Synth, Cello/Mellotron/Synth. These folks will be on tour with Disciplin soon. Check them out. They played two Crimson songs the night that I saw them. I wish they hadn't, but they did very credible renditions of the tunes. (I won't spoil it by saying which either.) On one song they were joined by a trumpet player, so if you can imagine a muscular "Islands" it had that sort of feel. Both groups have released excellent CDs. - Mark McCarron-Fraser mfraser at rs dot com [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sun, 8 Jan 1995 20:00:51 -0500 From: AFCPeterS at aol dot com Subject: Re: Elephant-talk digest v94 #163 > From: Nadav Noah Caine > Subject: Bewitched, Recommendations, Sara Lee > Date: Thu, 22 Dec 1994 00:04:46 -0800 (PST) > I almost went nuts when Fripp got Sara Lee from the Gang of 4 > (the best of the bitter, ironic, leftist post Sex Pistols > bands, certainly among the finest first albums of all time: > "Entertainment") to play in the League of Gentlemen.
