I ahve been hooked onm fripp/crimson since I heard Young Persons Guide 10 years ago. I thought I was the only one that liked this music until I discovered the discipline mail group. Thanks to Tony. I met Bill Bruford in London 1985. In a chat I had with him I found that his attitude towards Fripp was not positive. He sad that Fripp was teaching at some "Lunatic school". Well 2 years later I saw an Earthworks show in Germany and it was extremely good. Recommended. I wonder if anybody has written down the guitar-chords to the Crimson music. I am especially interested in "Cadence and Cascade" Which I find fantastic. Any other welcome. I am also willing to buy bootleg tapes, as I dont have any and they are generally not sold here (an understatement). I can offer the rarity EARTHBOUND. How about a RARITY BEST OF LIST ! I think the book tries too hard to be >deep and existentialist. Actually, I thought the book was quite excellent. The pacing of the writing matched the intensity of the story, the plot of which in the end tends towards the ridiculous. The story ends up showing up just how pretentious the Americans are who decide to travel through Northern Africa. They think they are equal to the Desert, but in the end it swallows both of them up, one is buried there and the other merely loses her mind. > A movie was recently made of the book. Anyone >see it? Any good? Yes, soon after I finished the book I discovered that the film was being made. The film is beautifully filmed and staged, but just doesn't make as much overall sense as the book. Important parts of the book are either glossed over or omitted, especially the wanderings of the sick man's mind and the details of the woman's relationship with the caravan leader and his wives. Some incredibly awesome scenery, in the truest sense of the word, however. > It doesn't really matter what I think of it though, >the music inspired by it is fantastic! KC's "The Sheltering Sky" is one >of my favorite tunes that they ever made (fun to play too!). Interestingly >enough, the Police's "Tea in the Sahara" is also based on this book In fact, I bought the book because of its title, and the fact that one of the chapters is called "Tea in the Sahara". -- John [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 18 Nov 91 14:53:07 GMT From: Bertie Subject: KC availability UK Okay, so the other day I recieved the Crimso/Fripp discography complied by J. Relph ( many thanks John ), but it started me thinking..... Sure its great to have a list of material thats been released, but what chance have I got of ever getting my hands on it ( let alone hearing it ) ? You see the problem is that I live in England, and I'm beginning to think that this means I'm at a disadvantage as far as listening to music goes ! I mean, I'm really getting fed up with going to record shops in this country, and finding no ( or maybe one ) KC release(s) available - and you can forget about Mr Fripp's solo material ! In fact, I got all of my KC CDs through making a " pilgrimage " to London; and as yet I haven't seen a copy of the new boxed set ! But why should this be so ? It is an English band after all; Fripp records and lives over here doesn't he ? What is the reason for this - record company apathy, or am I just unluckly ? Could it be Fripp's attitude - when was the last time he toured over here ? I suspect it has something to do with EG/virgin - for one thing they always seem to delete records shortly after release, and I did notice that Belew had moved to Atlantic for his last two solo albums. Anyway I don't want to carry on bitching about this, but has anyone else had similar problems ? Can anybody enlighten me as to why I am having these difficulties ? Paul. Captain Apathy [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 27 Nov 91 12:50:02 MST From: "John A. Turner" Subject: League..., Sunday... Hi, I'm fairly new to the list (I've received 13, 14, and 15), and I have a couple of questions: 1) Are back-issues of Discipline available by ftp? If so, please send me the Internet number as well as the machine address. 2) I know this is primarily a KC list, but is discussion of Fripp's more recent projects encouraged as well? If so: I recently saw Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists in Santa Fe (New Mexico, near where I live). Intense would be the most apt single word description of the show. Fripp's wife (can't remember her name right now) did little a cappella numbers between songs, which I didn't really care for at first, but which grew on me. I also picked up a tape of basically the songs they played that night. I think it's better than the stuff released on the League CD. I don't think it will ever be released by EG, but I think you can order it from Fripp. I'll post the info if there is interest. That brings me to Fripp's latest band, Sunday All Over the World. Has anyone else out there got it? It is titled _Kneeling at the Shrine_, and I really like it. Fripp's wife sings, and the rhythm section is phenomenal. Fripp uses both League-type playing and Frippertronics. I really like the combination. Oh, and thanks for the info on the Psychodots in Discipline #14, Neil. My wife and I both liked the Bears a lot (she's never been too keen on most of the KC stuff), especially the first album. We saw them in clubs in Raleigh, NC a couple of times. I think my favorite part was when they did Discipline as an encore and Fetters brought out a stool and pretended to be Fripp. Hilarious. They probably did that at a lot of shows. Come to think of it, I might have a terrible recording of one of the shows I was at if anyone's interested. -John Turner [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The views expressed in discipline are those of the individual authors only.
