The CD's I have are all from back in about 1985 or so and I purchased a newer copy of RED to see if there was any sound improvement. There was no indication on the pressing as to whether or any new mastering had taken place. I suspect not. So now I have two exact copies of RED - It's my favorite album, so I guess that's fitting, but I would like to know if anyone has heard anything about any re-mastered stuff. jack starmer (jms at hodgkin dot mc dot duke dot edu) [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 17 Sep 1994 21:26:38 -0400 From: eo994 at cleveland dot Freenet dot Edu (Chris Savage) Subject: Belew on video :) It is enlightening to see so much interest in Adrian Belew with this group. I was very happy to finally see a discography, etc. One thing that I noticed that was missing was a video the Adrian did back in 1980 or so that was advertised on MTV. It was a guitar-playing instructional video that would show you how to use "this embarassing array of electronic" gadgetry. Has anyone ever seen this to know if it worth having? bye :) -- ------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Savage, East Lansing MI| "Kill your television, then eo994 at cleveland dot freenet dot edu | go for a hike..." ------------------------------------------------------------- [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sun, 18 Sep 1994 02:21:49 -400 (EDT) From: Geoff Gladden Subject: Elephant Talk Earl's Court is a theatre (I believe) in London (i know). Now then, I know most of you out there have heard of and like this prog band called Anekdoten. Well, just thought I'd let everyone know that in November Anekdoten, along with a prog band from Detroit named Discipline (no lie!) will be embarking on a small US tour. This information is legit, it came from Discipline's manager who at present is in Sweden visiting with Anekdoten and I believe Anglagard. As soon as I get some dates and venues I'll be sure and post them. BTW, my name is Geoff and I'm new to this particular newsletter. I have the RFSQ video, it's great. It contains some tracks that aren't on the album. Also if there are any Ozric Tentacles fans out there, they will be at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit on September 29th I believe. And speaking of the Ozrics, I saw a video of them performing in London I think it was. Unfortunately I couldn't buy it because I had no money, damn. Oh well next time maybe. Presumably this is the same album I have as "McDonald and Giles" - a wonderful album (especially "Is she waiting?" and "Tomorrow's People"). I don't know of any others these two did together, but I wonder if you know of the album "Still" by Pete Sinfield? It was released on Manticore in 1973, and although the music doesn't measure up to KC's work, lyrically it is pretty much what you'd expect from Sinfield circa '73. His voice is more precious than, say, Lake's, so the songs are softer (and in one case, perplexingly like one of Harry Nillson's country-er efforts). Still, if you go for his lyrics, this album certainly fit in with the Islands era. >From: Chuck Ivy in Elephant Talk 148 >"Adrian, 'don't do eet!', Tony & Maggie, for the tea party" >Adrian & Tony I can identify. A long time ago I discovered that my own hearing actually distorts incoming sound when amplifyers are too loud (for me). I used to complain about the lousy distorting amplifyers until I plugged my ears with my fingers and discovered: I could hear clean sound and really enjoy the performance; it was still loud (I can feel the sound hitting me!); I could hear high frequencies after the concert. Best of all, earplugs (removing some 15dB) prevent that irritating ringing in the ears when you return to a quiet place. By the way, that ringing is a sign of PERMANENT damage. Sure the ringing goes away and your hearing seem to return to normal, but you're just hacking away at your ear's high frequencies. I'd love to see an audiogram of concert sound board people - I'd bet they have lousy detection above 20kHz and have fairly scary drops above 10kHz. =>Fortunately, the other guitarist, Michael Brooke(s?), I think, was artist =>extraordinaire! He had a half-rack of toys, at least several loops, and =>was the opening act as well as the "rhythm" guitarist for S/F. =>Comparing the two, I'd call Brooke(s?) the artist and Fripp the =>technician. (Yes, I dare this blasphemy! It's *my* opinion!:) Michael Brook!! He's a very versatile guitarist with a big electronic rack and a great taste in rhythm. He invented the "infinite guitar" that U2's The Edge plays. His =Cobalt Blue= showcases his abilities both as guitarist and producer. The sound (no vocals) is tough to describe but I'll give it a try: It's half way between Fripp's solo tape loop material of the mid 1980s and Tangerine Dream, but with LOTS more percussion, less Philip Glass type of minimalism, and each track sounds quite different from the other. Brook also shows up on a couple of Real World (Peter Gabriel's world colleagues) discs, both as player and producer. I was reading the autobiography of Bob Monkhouse -- the well-known UK TV "Entertainer" -- and he mentioned opening a club in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1969, called "Change Is". Amongst the "wonderful performers" who played there was ... King Crimson. Unless you know Bob Monkhouse, you can't appreciate how bizzare this would be.
