I suspect that I'm in a different position than all of you as I had previously only owned 3 Crimso albums (In the Court, Starless, and Discipline) and thus most of the set is material that I hadn't heard before. There seems however to be one blaring mistake, but I am unsure whether this only occurs on my copy of the set. On the live disk The Talking Drum is listed as lasting 29'04". On my disc It only lasts 8'30". Is this one of the many typos that was mentioned ot was I sold a defective set? At least I still have the receipt. Please drop me some mail. Thanks mIke [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: wcsswag at ccs dot carleton dot ca (The Charlatan) Subject: THE ABBREVIATED KING CRIMSON Date: Sun, 3 Nov 91 22:55:22 EST Ok, there's been a whole lot of (elephant) talk about the King Crimson box set. What I'd like to know about now is the 7 track CD EP Fripp released in tandem with the box called "The Abbreviated King Crimson". What's on it? Was it tinkered with too? What's it look like? I've recently ordered both the box and the ep, but don't expect to get either for many weeks (sigh... *DON'T* move to Canada if you like progressive rock - *JUST DON'T*). So I'd really like to know more. Also, the new Adrian Belew CD was released in the USA (sigh..) last Friday and is entitled "THE DESIRE OF THE RHINO KING", it's a compilation of the first three Belew albums (another one that I've ordered.. sigh..). Also of interest is the new PSYCHODOTS album. Who the hell are the Psychodots you ask? Their the BEARS minus Adrian Belew. And let me tell you people, they've put together one shitkicker of an album here. As a matter of fact, it's brilliant. It's even better than "rise & shine" or the last belew release even. Marvelous stuff. It's only available in the midwest in stores, but can be purchased for $10 from the record company directly (strugglebaby -- they couldn't score a deal with a real label -- so what else is new?). Let me know if you want the address. And yes, the $10 includes shipping (to Canada and USA). Some very Belewish playing indeed on it too. Rob Fetters certainly came out of the Belew experience as a vastly improved player. That's it for now! Again, a warning for those of you considering moving to Canada: *DON'T* COME HERE IF YOU ENJOY PROGRESSIVE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a nice place to visit but you certainly won't want to live here for extended periods. If it wasn't for these newsgroups I'd be totally out of touch with progrock happenings. thank god for usenet/internet. I have found lots of lyrics on the internet host cs.uwp.edu, but RED's lyrics are missing. Have you any idea of other network sites with these lyrics? Otherwise, may I share them with you, if any of you have them? Thanks a lot, - Enzo De Florio [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 4 Nov 91 17:13:52 PST From: malcolm at wrs dot com (Malcolm Humes) Subject: more on Bruford & Gong I'd already replied to the person asking about Bruford and Gong, and realized afterwards that he must have been with them in late 1974 because Bruford was touring with Crimson until July of that year. Anyway, I was transcribing some poems by Daevid Allen (former leader of Gong) which he had read at a local bookstore this summer, and I came across this poem he'd read, which appears to explain why Bill only worked with them quite briefly: ------ "Poem To Bill Bruford: `You look quite young, except your hands. You have old hands. ' I look at my hands... They look like I died last Saturday. `I couldn't stay in this band, you all think differently than me, you drive me mad. ha ha ha.' `I just couldn't do it' he added joyfully. Bloomdido says, hopefully, last angle, `We are a community of hermits' * `I like your playing' he said, gay-ly zooming in on Bloom, `It's binging fantastic!' " ** ---- By Daevid Allen, as read 8/91. * = pronounced with exaggerated french accent ** = it sounded like "binging" but may have been some other word... I found this kind of interesting, and presume this sums up why Bill didn't stay with them very long. Gong was proabably pretty loose compared to Yes and Crimson, and I guess Bill couldn't handle the group insanity. - Malcolm [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 6 Nov 91 18:51:31 PST From: "John M. Relph" Subject: Abbreviated Crimson CD I just picked up the new release from King Crimson. Here's the entry >from the discography I have compiled: 1991 Oct 29 The Abbreviated King Crimson: Heartbeat King Crimson Collectors Edition No. 1 1'31 The King Crimson Barber Shop 4'43 21st Century Schizoid Man (abbreviated) 4'54 In The Court of the Crimson King (abbreviated) 3'33 Elephant Talk (edited) 3'46 Matte Kudusai 2'57 Heartbeat (edited) 1'20 Medley CD US E'G (Virgin) KCCOL 1 (664 871) (digipak) And here is the text of the liner notes by Fripp hisself: In rock mythology King Crimson are often presented as one of those serious cultural concerns which we all respect, would rather not listen to, and definitely should not let onto commercial radio. In other words, art rock worthy of respect, praise and avoidance. Well, I'm not sure if King Crimson was art or whether rock can be art, and there are parts of Crimson's sonic history I would prefer not listen to. Generally, the group's craft was worthy of respect, praise and avoidance at various and the same times. Hordes of earnest young men from New Jersey would probably agree. So far, let's hear it for rock mythology. It IS possible to reduce a complexity of operations to a series of simple propositions and principles, but not to rock myth. Rock mythology is simplistic. Real life in rock music is much, much richer, tasty and more exciting than this: the experience of it bites our ear, makes the nose twitch, disgusts, is sacramental, a testament to the very worst of human nature, burlesque, a backdrop to social and gender manoeuvres, a microcosm. And, for me, a liberal education in the school of living and life while thinking, swaying, suffering, laughing and dealing on a pair of feet in rapid motion. What the simplistic presentation misses is that King Crimson has some great numbers -- in a word, classics -- that virtually anyone can listen to, again and again. And have. My mother's favourite Crimson track is still "Schizoid Man". She is the only septuagenarian to regularly sport King Crimson tee shirts, complete with screaming Schizoid face, in Wimborne Square and High Street. This record was originally designed for radio stations as a promotional vehicle to accompany "The Essential King Crimson: Frame By Frame", a four CD Box Set with scrapbook. Generally, commercial station formats effectively prohibit King Crimson from reaching those listeners covered by demographic analysis. The "abbreviations" of the pieces were done with good humour and an eye on the stopwatch. Actually, I rather like them myself. The medley was prepared for presenting an intensive overview of the catalogue to a Virgin Sales Conference in London. If anyone would like to hear the original versions, designed for a different time and place, when time flowed at a slower tempo, I recommend "The Essential King Crimson". This retrospective project carries the same conviction as the original records. There are a number of King Crimson classics which regularly appear on radio, or have done, despite the tag of "art" which follows us around. Sometimes this is the work of lonely DJs who champion the cause of King Crimson accessibility, sometimes general acknowledgement of "classic" status, sometimes an example of a period of rock history. Here are five of them. Collectors being what they are, the large promotional issue to radio stations would eventually end up in private hands. I have no objection to this. For those collectors who would rather not wait, and for anyone who would rather dip briefly into classic Crimson, we make publicly available this record intended for radio. So, here you have it: the first King Crimson Collectors Edition: "The Abbreviated King Crimson: Heartbeat." I love it. Sunday 1st August, 1991 The CD comes in one of those awful digipaks. The CD itself a picture of the hands and the crown from the Box Set. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. -- John P.S. The Fripp Discography is now much more complete. E-mail me for a copy. I appreciate all contributions.
