A few months ago I read some heated discussions about the Insider's Guide To King Crimson DVD that was coming out (or had come out) with illegally used live footage, footage that was going to be used later on an official King Crimson DVD release for the 70's period. Has anyone seen this Insider's Guide DVD? When is the "official" DVD with the 70's live footage coming out, if at all? -Jordan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Aug 2006 11:32:18 -0400 From: Peter Key Subject: The relationship between the 1972-74 King Crimson and the counter culture of that time. I can answer Dave Allen's question about the status of the 1972 to 1974 edition of King Crimson. I was a college student then, as well as a KC fan, which I remain. So here goes. First of all, by that time, the so-called counter-culture was effectively dead, at least musically speaking. The giant media machine had sucked up and commercialized what it was going to suck up and commercialize; things outside it would largely remain outside it forever. Nowadays, the media is much more splintered than it was then, so being outside it and surviving is eminently possible; back then, it was harder. As for me, I'd like to say I realized the counter-culture had been absorbed by the corporate mainstream, but at least in 1972, I probably still had the naive belief that it was alive, could survive and could still make the earth a better place. Crimson itself was on the fringe of the mainstream, largely by virtue of its first album, which could be found in record collections of people who would flee the room after the first verse (if that's the correct term) of "Fracture." I saw the 72 to 74 edition of KC four times. Twice, it was a headliner; once in front of a largely unknown band (the Michael Stanley Super Session) at Penn State (two tracks of this concert appear on "The Great Deceiver"); and once outside Pittsburgh on a bill with Spooky Tooth and Foghat. The other times I saw it were in Philadelphia when it opened for Todd Rundgren at the University of Pennsylvania, and was the middle act in a three-act concert at the Spectrum that was headlined by the Kinks. As I think this shows, the 72-74 Crimson almost never headlined in large venues, and, although it headlined in smaller ones, wasn't counted on to fill them by itself. My guess would be that the biggest audience it was capable of drawing by itself in the States was 5,000 to 10,000, making it far too big for clubs, but not big enough to be the star in the big hockey rink/basketball arenas located in most major American cities. I doubt very much that there was a tribe of people who followed King Crimson around. As I said earlier, I saw the '73-'74 Crimson four times; that was the most of anyone I've ever encountered, and more than any of my friends, some of whom were also devoted Crimson fans. I thought the '72-'74 King Crimson was among the best bands of its time, as well as among the best of all time. But I wasn't listening to a lot of rock - mostly jazz and jazz-rock. The typical rock listener of the era found much of Crimson's music inaccessible. As a result, it got little airplay anyplace. Radio ads prior to the Penn State concert featured "In the Court of the Crimson King," and an announcer prompting people to "be a courtier" by attending the concert. It's currently listed on Ebay so just just type in Court of the Crimson King on Ebay's search engine to see a JPG. I hope you like it.
