Joe ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2006 10:41:23 -0400 From: Progressive Soundscapes Subject: Fripp/Belew & PT I have to add my 2 cents here. Without question Porcupine Tree is the best "neo-progressive rock" band out there today. When I discovered PT about 8 years ago, I was calling Steven Wilson this generations Robert Fripp. Seems I was quite prophetic seeing as how Robert has now toured with the band a few times and Adrian has played with the band on a few tracks on their newest cd. To fully appreciate Steven's work you have to digest his complete body of work which is quite extensive. There's not only his work the 13 or so cds with PT, but there's his work with No-Man, I.E.M. and his ambient project, Bass Communion. (If you're into ambient, check out his recent collaboration with Vidna Obmana on 2005's Continuum.) (And also check his collaboration with Aviv Geffen on the amazing prog cd, Blackfield.) Pt's music these days is a bit rougher than cd's past. Steve has recently gotten in the heavy industrial "metal" prog sound, such as you might hear with bands like Tool and NIN. But the music is far superior than what you would hear from these bands. Their earlier cds tended to be much more melodic and "spacier". You can hear the industrial influences stating to surface in their Lightbulb Sun cd, which continued to grow in the next 2 cds, In Absentia and their newest, Deadwing. PT's band is equally amazing in terms of muscianship. The keyboardist is the talented Richard Barbeiri who's played with David Sylvian in the ground breaking band Japan, as well as Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The drummer is the incredible Gavin Harrison, who joined the band on the making of the In Absentia cd. Gavin at one point was personally invited by Bill Bruford to tour with Bill and perform a series of percussion clinics a few years back. I had the chance to interview Bill Bruford a few years back and when we spoke about Gavin, Bill called him an amazingly gifted drummer, "far better then he ever is". Pretty high praise from Bill himself. If you live on the East Coast, don't miss this opportunity to catch these gigs. I think they are only doing 3 shows together, Philly, New York and Boston.
