If I remember right, two years (or so ??) ago there was a concert (in Holland was it), where some of Robert Fripp's soundscapes were performed by symphony orchestra. If I remember right, the performance was to be recorded and released on record some day...or was it just to be broadcasted on the radio...or am I dreaming? Is there anyone there, who could tell me, what really happened? Really would like to hear those performances, if they're available. At least DGMLive hasn't stooped to providing downloads in DRM crippled (copy protected, or digital restrictions management, as Richard Stallman would say) downloads in Windows Media format or somesuch thing. I was looking forward to purchasing many of the recent Eno re-releases but was dismayed to discover copy protection on them all, so I'll have to live with my vinyl copies. But I guess on the bright side I imagine this Microsoft deal will provide a good deal of money for DGM and any future Crimson activities. Good old money. Definitely a sublime recording. I think any Crimson fan would LOVE it! But here's an interesting twist. Like many of you, I'm a Crimson fan whose spouse is not. But when she walked into the office recently while I was playing this she said, "Hey, we're listening to jazz today, great!" She thought the album was quite good and wanted to know who it was. So there you have it, the perfect album for Crimson fans whose spouses aren't!!! LOL!!! For those who'd like to hear a soundbite, you'll find one on our Voiceprint page at . However a search on that site for Robert Fripp will lead to the Video. It's about 25 minutes and 95 MB (broadband access recommended). Although the sound is of minor quality it is - at least for soundscape enthusiasts - worth watching it. http://www.mainstreampublishing.com/images/t/the_road_to_harrys_bar.jpg Our author, Gordon Haskell, has recommended your web site as one of the most pertinent to his new book THE ROAD TO HARRY'S BAR. Before he broke the all-time records for radio play previously held by The Beatles and Frank Sinatra with his 2001 single 'How Wonderful You Are', Gordon Haskell had worked behind the scenes with many musical greats and featured in the line-up for King Crimson. He also played for rowdy drunks on booze cruises; some days would find him at a Hollywood poolside or scurrying to escape an FBI raid on a Miami gambling den. He became the friend of milkmen and movie stars, policemen and prostitutes, crackpots and gun-toting mafia men. This is the story of the twisting and potholed road to Harry's Bar. Even after a 2.8 million deal for his lifetime's songwriting work, Haskell has been left owing money to the moguls who steered him to the top and he is now unable to make another record without every penny going to those who turned his windfall into a debt. THE ROAD TO HARRY'S BAR is a tribute to all that was once great in the music business but it is also a candid account of the double-dealing and sacrifice Gordon encountered en route to the top. In the past we have merely asked other sites to set up reiprocal links to our own site www.mainstreampublishing.com but we would now like to offer more. We are happy to set up an interview with the author, arrange a short extract from the book or ask the author if he is willing to write something for your website. After having found the various sources of information on Robert Fripp's guitar gear over the years to be scattered, incoherent and sometimes difficult to find in the first place, I decided to do something about it and put together a little guide called "Fripperies". This is my favourite part of guitarist fandom - the study of equipment is far more interesting than the hunt for autographs. Karl Boman ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Feb 2006 21:29:53 GMT From: Jamie Wilkie Subject: Bootlegs I really don't get Fripp at all sometimes. As much as I love what has happened with DGM Live and all the music that has now been made available to us, their latest offering seems to be an audience recording of a date the band played in Germany in October 1981. OK - so it's a good performance by a great band at the peak of their game and features a nice version of an embryonic 'Neal and Jack and Me' as well as a really good take on 'Red', but it's an audience bootleg nonetheless and (frankly) sounds like it. It's also being retailed from the DGM Live web site for the same cost as a properly sourced concert recording. On this subject I am not complaining. I like what I hear and it's still cheap; maybe cheaper than what a bootlegger would ask. But it still leaves me feeling uneasy and here is why. Only last week I bought 'Love Cannot Bear' and like it an awful lot too. My problem lies in the liner notes which I have to paraphrase as I don't have the CD to hand. In these notes it states that Fripp's concert security has to concentrate on several things, not least of whuich is enforcing the 'no photographs and no recording' that is absolutely reasonably asked of the audience. However, being sold a clearly admitted audience-recorded show by DGM makes me wonder just how much he really disapproves of the practice. Furthermore, I am left wondering on the nature of the deliterious effect that recording shows in this manner has (according to Fripp) when it is clear in equal measure that not only is it a superb show, it also meets with Fripp's approval as he has chosen to flog it on his web site. It is not my intent to criticise - I like what DGM is and what it is doing - but I am most interested in hearing how he can square the circle and manage to condem bootlegging whilst at the same time profit from it. kind regards Jamie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 23:08:16 -0800 From: Daniel Kirkdorffer Subject: Remembering Steven Sthole Dear ETers, I just received the very sad news that one of own, Steven Sthole, passed away from cancer last Friday. Many of you will recall that Steve was the ET FAQmaster for a number of years and indeed the present FAQ has long since suffered since Steve stepped down from the role. Steven also maintained a site about King Crimson that he simply called, "The Greatest Band In The Universe!" (http://www.stevensthole.com/band.html) I only met Steve once, during the Bootleg TV days when he was invited to share his thoughts as a fan running a fan site, but amazingly that's one time more than my in person meetings with Toby and Mike, such is the nature of this World Wide Web we weave. I am glad to have met Steve and to have been able to benefit from his enthusiasm, as we all have from the energy he poured into his contributions to ET. He will be missed, and I wish his family my sincere condolences on his passing.
