He's the famous guitarist and composter, known for his founding role in the band King Crimson. So, what was he doing on campus? Recording the various sounds we'll all hear in Windows Vista. This is a different kind of Channel 9 video. We needed to be quiet during the recording session so you can just follow along. It's a little audio preview of what Windows Vista will sound like. Sorry it's dark too. Charles Torre was invited over by Steve Ball to film the session. Hope you enjoy it. Video is dark, sound is decent. Fred ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2006 09:52:07 +0000 From: stereoroid.com webmister Subject: RF the Windows Vista Sessions Microsoft's Channel 9 news service has released a downloadable video of the recording session that Robert Fripp did there, for "system sounds" for the forthcoming Windows Vista operating system. He's following in the footsteps of Brian Eno, who did the famous "Microsoft Sound" for Windows 95, way back then. http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=151853 94MB, Windows Media Video (of course) "Robert Fripp was on the Microsoft campus a few weeks back. He's the famous guitarist and composter, known for his founding role in the band King Crimson." "Composter"? Oooh-arrr! Suits me - I've been doing Windows since version 2.0 if anyone remembers that. I expect to be using Vista, at least at work, so I'll enjoy a miniature Soundscape now and then. Don't know what to say to all you Macintosh users... sorry! brian thomson dublin, ireland stereoroid.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2006 18:22:53 -0200 From: Roberto Lestinge Subject: Islands Cover The matter of Islands having two different covers is quite simple. The original english release had the galaxy ( or something like that) as the proper cover. The inner sleeve was what the Americans decided to use as the main cover. Therefore if you'd bought the European version you'd have the whole artwork, whereas the Americans would have to content themselves with half of it. Actually, it would be a good idea to see how many great artworks have been chopped, changed, maimed, whatever, in the name of the ever elusive American market. Now, in the age of cds, it's a tottaly different story. Sorry, but nothing beats the beauty of an LP cover. Try "In the Wake of Poseidon". You may find more about the painter and its "12 archetypes" on the web. I find them entertaining, thought-provoking and occasionally educational. I also like to know what's been released for download because I add the information to the ET Fripp-O-Graphy. And there's also that Hot Tickle thing going on. To make it easier for me, I wrote a little Perl hack which visits dgmlive.com and builds an RSS feed. If you're interested, you can read the feed at "http://elephant-talk.com/discog/fripp/dgmlive.xml". The feed is updated every few hours. When my computer is on. It is a work-in-progress. Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements. But please don't ask me how to use it. Enjoy! -- John -- n.p. Robert Fripp: Queer Jazz: Symmetrical (20051208) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 09:02:45 -0500 From: John Relph Subject: Robert Fripp does Vista Wow. According to Scobleizer at Channel 9 Forums, Robert Fripp is recording (has recorded) the sounds to be part of Vista, the forthcoming Microsoft Windows operating system. There's a short film posted to the forum: http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=151853 Did Eno have a hand in the sounds in a previous version of Windows? Wow. -- John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 05:40:46 EST From: IanSharwood Subject: Fripp and Sylvian - Crimson Jazz Trio Hi Everyone I don't post often but I noted the appeal for a copy of the Sylvian Fripp concert from 1993. I have a video recording of it somewhere and am currently experimenting with transfer to DVD. It was broadcast on television some years ago in England but the sound was only TV quality not HiFi. On another issue has anyone heard the Crimson Jazz Trio with Ian Wallace. If you like Jazz and King Crimson you will love it. I can't stop playing it; all K.C. material with a jazz presentation. It's available from Voiceprint. If this is old news sorry; I think the years are catching up with me! Regards. Ian Sharwood. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 09:36:04 -0000 From: Martin Temperton Subject: Roberts Vista http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=151853 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 18:56:45 -0500 From: Mike Subject: Robert Fripp and Windows Vista I found this recently and it might be of interest to any Fripp fans out there. http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=151853 Cheers, Mike http://community.webtv.net/thedukeofprunes/ALLTHINGSCRIM ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #1219 *********************************
