Since then, there has been some modification to that position, as live recordings are now sold by DGM. Has Fripp recently expressed any opinion, pro or con, about fan trading of live recordings of King Crimson or Fripp, when no money changes hands ? JoanBull ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Sep 2005 15:21:59 -0400 From: David Kirkdorffer Subject: regarding Eric Malone's experince in Somerville, MA June 24, I too was in the audience at during Robert Fripp's June 24th Somerville Soundscape performance, sitting in the 10th row. I am glad my experience of this evening's performance was different from Eric's. From Eric's account, it seems I may have had a better time of it. I've learned that when distractions occur during Soundscape performances, staying relaxed and focusing my attention where I want it helps keep me on track. (I wish I could apply this technique more regularly in other aspects of my life.) As Fripp himself said that evening when asked about his attention span, (and I'm paraphrasing here) "when it wanders, I bring it back." Anyway, I concentrated on listening and don't think I noticed the audience as much as did Eric. Closing my eyes at points helped. Getting back to the musical performance; I enjoyed the evening's flow and frequencies and the new "architectures" Fripp played with, including new ways to end Soundscapes. It seemed to me on this evening Fripp was more melodic than at other times I've seen him on solo Soundscape tours. I'm looking forward to a possible CD using performances from this tour. My only regret for the evening of June 24th in Somerville is that I did not stand up and ask my one burning question. Subject: Uncle Ted I do not know if this has been brought up before, so here goes: Back in 1972, a guy called Mike Quatro released a record titled 'Paintings'. Ted Nugent guests on this album, helping out on a remake of 'The Court Of The Crimson King'. Ted's playing guitar, not singing. Now you'll want it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Sep 2005 08:22:42 -0500 From: Tim Siefkes Subject: Belew at the Zoo My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic evening last night when Adrian and his current touring trio appeared in the outdoor amphitheater at, of all places, the Minnesota Zoo. We got our tickets early on so we had third row seats, and what a perfect venue for Ade. His first comment when they came out was "I feel so at home here!". Under a summery clear sky, against a backdrop of a rock wall, overhanging tree branches and a small man-made lake, Ade and his trio performed classic Ade hits (such as "Young Lions", "Big Electric Cat"), some material off his solo CD Side One (such as "Ampersand"), some strange and funky improvisations and even a few Crimson surprises... "Dinosaur", "Frame by Frame", "Three Of A Perfect Pair" and "Thela Hun Ginjeet". At one point during TOAPP, Adrian and Mike Gallagher (bass) were watching each other *very* closely and I swear I heard one single riff from "Frame by Frame" sneaked in there. It went by pretty fast -- but from the way they looked at each other and seemed to share a mutual grin and a nod afterwards, made me think it was true. My wife also noticed it! Thanks Adrian, for including Minnesota on your itinerary. If we could drive to Milwaukee tonight to catch you again, we would. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Sep 2005 16:26:55 +0100 From: Russell Whitworth Subject: "Hidden" track on Eyes Wide Open I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I've just spotted that there is an uncredited track on Disk 2 of the Eyes Wide Open DVD set. The third track (if you play from the beginning) is in fact "Heaven and Earth". It is slipped between The ConstruKction Of Light and VROOOM. It's not listed on the back cover, nor on the insert, nor in the menu system - so the only way of finding it is by playing the previous track and letting it continue. Hence the concert contains 16 tracks, not 15. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 14:56:51 -0400 From: gerald underhill Subject: exposure Robert something i have wished for since i first experienced it, is: a few seconds at the beginning of a rock cd to get settled in before the music comes at me. most early music cds, such as Jacob Heringman's "Josquin des Prez", have this feature. would you be interested in experimenting with this 'addition' on the re-release of "exposure"? regards, gerald ------------------------------ Date: 19 Sep 2005 04:32:17 -0000 From: Glenn H Subject: Introduction to the New Standard Tuning Introduction to the New Standard Tuning Colrain, MA, USA Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th of November, 2005 Guitar Instruction: Tony Geballe Alexander Technique: Stephanie Kalka During this weekend the New Standard Tuning will be introduced and an introduction to basic techniques, commonly used in Guitar Craft, will be given. From The Diary: "David & i are working here completing love cannot bear (the re-titled affirmations soundscapes album). hugh will have the artwork ready by the end of next week & i'll finalise the mastering with simon heyworth on dartmoor (along with exposure) before leaving for soundscape touring in the US. that will leave hugh with the exposure sleeve to complete. exposure will be 2 CDs." Is a Tour, or a non-Tour in the offing? Old Ears ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 14:41:49 EDT From: DrBaht Subject: Nine Horses I just wanted to make any David Sylvian fans out there aware of the upcoming collaboration called Nine Horses - Snow Borne Sorrow. The release date is expected to be October 11, 2005. This was the project that originally began as a collaboration between Sylvian and his brother Steve Jansen back in 2002. Yet with the addition of keyboardist/vibraphonist Burnt Friedman (plus the many other musicians he brought along with his participation) earlier this year, the project has bloomed into a joint venture between the three. Unfortunately, the change in direction led to Robert Fripp's October 2004 contribution to the Sylvian/Jansen project being left off of this release. Perhaps that song will see a release in some form at some other point in time. Guest musicians include Tim Motzer on guitar, Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano, Stina Nordenstam on vocals, Arve Hendriksen on trumpet, Hayden Chisholm on sax and clarinet, Keith Lowe and Daniel Schroeter on basses. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 17:23:37 +0100 From: Simon Godfrey Subject: Trey Gunn; Inactive But Not Forgotten Having completely missed the last incarnation of KC live, I took the opportunity of playing catch up by purchasing the Crim double DVD 'Eyes Wide Open' which has the band live in Japan touring 'The Power The Believe' and a night at the Sheppard's Bush Empire (London, UK) circa 'ConstruKtion Of Light'. In both shows the band were impressive but the aspect that really struck a chord with me was just how engaging Trey Gunn's performance was. The Japan show in particular demonstrated exactly why he had been chosen to fill the boots of Tony Levin. His work with Pat Mastelotto as a rhythm section was sublime as was his individual contributions to the improvised sections. Overall however what hit me most was that he appeared to make his playing look so effortless and yet sound totally appropriate. It is a difficult thing to stamp your own mark upon a band such as Crimson but to do it in such a subtle yet effective manner, displays the mark of an individual who has understood what he was there to do and accepted the task as an opportunity to be creative. As a KC fan of some twenty four years now I'd like to say a big thank you to Trey Gunn for being the right man, in the right place at exactly the right time. Cheers Simon. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 07:17:38 -0700 (PDT) From: George Khouroshvili Subject: ETers tribute to KC Hello everyone, I remember that long time ago there was a section at the ET web-site with King Crimson covers made by ETers.
