Haque Subject: NEWS: Announcing the Adrian Belew "Side One" Trivia Contest Hello! Maybe you've heard that Adrian Belew's new solo album, "Side One", is finally available. If you haven't had a chance to hear it yet, it's good. Just trust me. :) And if you haven't had a chance to buy it yet, you might be interested in this little shindig here. We have five copies of "Side One" to give away to some folks who can answer just a few simple questions (at least our evil FAQmistress Sarah Metivier told me they were easy [and no, you do not get to ask her for the answer key, *grin*]). If you'd like a chance to win one of five copies of Adrian's "Side One" on CD, simply send me your answers/guesses to the following three questions to nadim at elephant-talk dot com *** PLEASE DON'T POST REPLIES TO THIS CONTEST TO THE NEWSLETTER -- THEY WON'T BE SEEN!!! *** Your entries are due 168 hours (a full whopping week) after Mike sent out this issue of the ET Newsletter per e-mail, and I will draw five lucky winners from all who have answered the questions correctly. Here are the questions: 1. Has Adrian ever been mentioned in an episode of "The Simpsons"? If so, when and how? 2. What name did young Belew go by before choosing the stage name "Adrian"? 3. At the Bonnaroo Festival last summer, Adrian performed three songs with Primus. After playing with Adrian, what was Primus bassist Les Claypool's comment to the crowd? So, fire up your thinking caps and put on your Googly fingers. Cheers and good luck! Nadim ---------- Nadim S. In August of 2004, the CGT released Whitewater produced by Tony Levin (King Crimson/ Peter Gabriel). With shimmering clean acoustic sounds blended with ambient and pungent electronics, Whitewater is a benchmark CD in the CGT's catalog. Featuring mainly original works of the CGT, offset by a puzzle work arrangement of a Bach lute suite and a unusual version of the Cowboy classic Ghost Riders, the CGT have clearly arrived at a new level. From CGTrio.com P.S. The band will also appear at B.B. The touring schedule of KC and side projects does seem to be a bit relentless and people's reactions however rational or more frequently irrational can take it's toll. On the up side, Fripp might feel that he is once again coming close to the dreaded dozy automation state or feels his habits are beginning to control him rather than the other way 'round. Whatever the situation, there has been no announcement yet and even if there were, maybe we could be witnessing another three year haitus followed by something really special. For me, the glass is half full. Simon. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2005 12:05:26 -0600 From: Rob Murphree Subject: The Big Electric Chat - Adrian Belew Newsletter is back! Does anyone have information about what happened to EG Records or Editions EG? Who owns and/or distributes the catalog? Also, I have been trying to get information about Robert Quine with limited success. Does anyone know if 'Basic' was ever released as a CD, or how I can get a copy of it? Thanks to all. Tim Suliman Hamtramck, Michigan P.S., I just returned from the NAMM show in Anaheim and I have some pictures of Tony Levin there. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 15:58:51 -0800 From: RICHARD WHITEHURST Subject: NST I say this with all due love and respect... Perhaps it's time for many musicians from the 70s to start arranging and managing their retirements. Listening to recent offerings by many of these once wonderful musicians (King Crimson included) it appears that the the more immediate music may have left them for younger quicker souls. Robert would not be the first great musician to stop touring, Jim Morrison (now living in Bend Oregon) gave it up quite early in his career. I saw him just the other day and he said: "Damn I got tired of that crap... Lizards and shit" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 16:34:59 -0300 (ART) From: Ronald Miklos Vogel Subject: Fripp x Touring Hi Everyone Well, what to say about it? Fripp is not so different than what I am (at 44). He's almost 59 and is tired of some behaviours. I do select company. My job forces me to travel visiting clients as well as other company office. I do not like it a lot because I "have to" get in touch with people and things that I really would not choose to meet and live (if I could). I accept all that and do not stress myself but try "to make the best out of the bad (or not so good)". I like some people a lot, but sure not most of the ones I usually meet. He is tired of all that. We will miss him. Long live the King, even if he stays at home (or the office). Ronald Vogel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 19:46:50 -0000 From: steve Subject: Carry On Fripp I am dismayed to think that Robert may end his touring days. I have waited so long to see KC in the UK it looks like I may go to my grave unsatisfied. Robert my feel the time has come to to end gigging but he is only feeling like the rest of us. Everyday I get up and go to work, I do not wish to do this however I have to pay the bills, not only that I work in the service industry and get pissed with the public, but I do it because its a worth while job and most of the community appreciate what I do, its the minority that spoil it. What I am saying is please keep going for the majority who love and appreciate you and your music, you offer a service to many music lovers who just want to listen and appreciate the show. While I am here I have just purchased KCCC 28. Its now time to have a King Crimson DVD Collector Clubs of whatever is available from 1969 to the present. The Hyde Park gig was filmed did it include KC. just an example of the sort of stuff that must be out there. Plus all the gigs from 2000 were filmed (I believe). Finally I saw Robert at Newcastle, fantastic, I was saddened by some of the crowd and there rudeness but you certainly made me happy, especially when G3 did Red Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 10:01:50 -0500 From: Joseph Basile Subject: Who wouldn,t buy SOUNDSCAPES FROM HELSINKI ! 17.14 Chez Horse, Chiswick. Now, back with Soundscapes in Helsinki. 17.37 Helsinki's Soundscapes are remorseless & uncompromising. It is there life and their right. I remember after RED (what for seven years?), thinking that I would never see KC again. IMHO /Personally I so grateful that they came back, and better and better each time! THE POWER TO BELEIVE will let them retire KC at their very best to date! DISCIPLINE and ICOTKC were just too awesome to match as starting points. Just IMHOP- THE POWER TO BELEIVE and following concerts would be extremely hard to match at this point in time. Of course I've been wrong before. Just my humble opinion. I'm certainly an enthusiast, and would like to see him perform live again, by himself or under the aegis of a group. Me too. I am glad I've seen Crimson and Mr. Fripp as often as I have. I'd like to continue to see him, but only if he can figure out a way to tour that doesn't feel like dental work without anesthesia. >Has Mr. Fripp considered venues where a quiet, concentrated audience can be more reasonably expected? I wonder. Wouldn't it be great to see King Crimson as part of a classical music subscription? Would it work? I live in Portland, Oregon. Would King Crimson appear as part of the Oregon Symphony music season? They wouldn't necessarily have to appear with the orchestra, though it would be nice - Mr. Keeling could write symphonic arrangements of King Crimson songs, and the people who normally go see Haydn, Bach, Mahler and Shostakovich could see Crimson instead. >And venues where a more "classical" audience mindset is the norm will, in all likelihood, result in quiet attention and focus. One could hope, anyway. Has Mr. Fripp lost his patience with the whole performance thing? I like the idea of Crimson bridging the gap between "serious music" and rock - but somehow I don't think Mr. Fripp sees this as his responsibility. - S. ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #1198 *********************************
