The stereotypical response from M K Smith, complete with Michael Moore Farenheit 911 babble, motivating him to pontificate loosely, regarding the paradigm of Americans, is confirmation of one nail flattened securely. And by the way there were no hippies left in 1974, only the equal of what M K Smith pretends to represent today with lameass socialist stereotypical generalizations of intellectualism and freedom. King Crimson is so severely lacking in lyrical contact, that even ET has absorbed a huge fallout of value-based posting. Perhaps something good will come from this "cabin" fever and irritability. I still harbor a wish for Adrian to leave the band rather than retire his lyrical expressions to a backdrop for a vaguely conscious Fripp band. In the midst of a new world of daily terror, King Crimson has nothing to say. No wonder M K Smith is so duped. I myself as an American am foremost an individual and therefore despise every fibre of socialism, Michael Moore included. While I do hope M K Smith posts often, I must say that if he plans on dragging that Michael Moore about my corners of America he best grow some thicker skin or stay the hell out of my basement. Now, I don't know if this has been discussed a million times before and the FAQ was sadly of no help in clarifying this, so here is my post. I am curious as to the point behind "new standard tuning" (as I believe it is called). I have been playing guitar for almost 20 years and have always used the traditional 4ths tuning with only two notable exceptions; 1, drop bass D and 2, F# on string 3. Both of these are designed to make playing period music (Dowland, Narvaez, Milan, Weiss and Bach) easier and more accessible on the guitar. I recently read somewhere about Mr. Fripp's "guitar craft" tuning and seem to remember that it is entirely in perfect 5ths with the exception of strings 1 and 2 which I believe are a minor 3rd. This would give something like; 1 = G; 2 = E; 3 = A; 4 = D; 5 = G; 6 = C. Firstly, have I got this correct or did I read it wrong? Now, if I have this tuning right, I am totally baffled as to the point of using it. The guitar WORKS in fourths it does NOT work in fifths! Consider; diatonic scales and modes work perfectly using 3 notes per string, which means you play a 3rd linearly then change strings. With string intervals of 5ths though you'd have to position shift on every string OR stretch. Stretching is fine on a violin, but the guitar is a lot bigger. Similarly, arpeggio shapes would be totally out of the window in this new tuning. Now we come to chords; every single chord shape previously learned would be useless in the new tuning and in fact, I cannot see how one could even successfully PLAY most common chords as one's fingers would simply not be flexible or long enough to reach the notes. I just cannot understand the value of the exercise and wonder deep down whether it is in fact Mr Fripp's intension to simple take a lot of promising guitarists and totally destroy their technique and playing style as part of some neo-zen experiment into the deconstruction of the instrument while getting paid to do so. You will forgive me for sounding cynical but if I, after almost 20 years experience and a successful spell at music college studying classical Guitar, cannot figure this out, then I am left to wonder if it has any point or meaning at all. The alternative is that I know next to nothing about guitar and should either start learning again or quit altogether. This is cannot accept. Finally, I know that I have kind of walked head first into the lion's den here; as doubtless many, if not all, of you are huge Crimson fans. If anyone chooses to simply slag me off for saying what I have without actually helping me to a greater understanding, then that is their right. It is also my right to totally disregard what they say as fan flaming. However, if someone genuinely wishes to lend me a helping hand, it will be much appreciated. regards, Gary Ormond ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 10:58:17 -0700 From: Michael Grantham Subject: general question(s) about future releases Hello: Can you assist in pointing me in the right direction to who or where I should direct questions I have about future KC releases on CD? Specifically, I've held off buying any of the original E.G./Virgin/Caroline titles, hoping they would be eventually re-mastered on a high-res. medium (DVD-A, SACD, 24-bit etc.) and expanded with copious bonus tracks. I recently heard a rumor that these classic titles will soon expire at Virgin and will be under the control of the band (?). An example of this (Fripp): Saturday Night, 9th. October: The flight from Buenos Aires > Washington. I was surrounded by semi-boobies. The man on my left, in the adjoining seat, had no physical stillness & occasionally boobyised by nose-picking that was, of course, invisible to anyone else. At the end of the flight there arose from his seat a regrettable aroma of exogustation. On my right, across the aisle, 2 Japanese guys with boobyism of the mouth - uncontrolled yammering. Future releases from Voiceprint and associated labels Bruford & Borstlap/In Concert In Holland ....import DVD + CD This wonderfully evocative live DVD captures two great musicians pushing the boundaries of music and particularly jazz. Recorded live in Nimjigen in Holland in 1995 the concert features Bill Bruford and world-renowned jazz pianist Michiel Borstlap. Bill Bruford is best known for his work with British bands Yes and King Crimson. In his time he has also performed with Genesis and UK. He has also led his own bands Bruford and the more straight ahead jazz combo Earthworks that he leads to this day. Bill Bruford has also recorded a great many albums with various other like-minded jazz musicians such as Patrick Moraz, and Ralph Towner. Michiel Borstlap has also worked with many great jazz musicians over the years more notably with Jimmy Haslip, Toots Thielmans, and Pat Metheney. This concert comes from the personal archives of Bill Bruford and documents a live concert that took place in Nijmwegen in 2002 and finds the pair in almost intuitive mood and whilst being intimate is also assertive at the same time. The performance is passionate and the free expression of both musicians comes across on this exciting live document that has not been previously released before. This package also contains the audio version of the DVD as a bonus disc.=20 Bruford & Borstlap/Every Step A Dance; Every Word A Song These recordings are taken from a personal archive of the dates the Bruford-Borstlap duo have played since their first meeting at the Nijmegen Festival in Holland, in 2002. The nature of the music is conversational. In a small room, where most of the tracks were recorded, this may have the intimacy of a dinner table conversation between old friends ('Round Midnight, Every Step). But in a big hall, things may quite naturally become a lot more muscular and assertive (16 Kingdoms, Swansong). They are quite capable of sounding like a band with three times as many people in it, yet at no time do they lose authorship, identity, or immediacy. The title of this album sets the scene for the pure pleasure found in these recordings, which ably display the passion both Bruford and Borstlap have for free expression and spontaneous performance. Released for the first time on CD these performances will appeal not only to fans of both Bill Bruford and Michiel Borstlap but also to all lovers of cutting edge, spontaneous music of any genre. Please note that this CD contains entirely different songs than the duo's DVD "In Concert in Holland." New releases from Voiceprint and associated labels Bill Bruford/Music for Piano & Drums=20 Winterfold records is one of two record company imprints that has been formed by Bill Bruford to release Bill's recorded work with the band Bruford and also Bill's work with keyboard player Patrick Moraz. Whilst initially the label will be releasing the officially released albums from the period 1978-1985 there will also be the opportunity in the future to release material that has in the past only been available on bootleg and perhaps even material that has never seen a commercial release. =A0 Following 'Bruford,' Bill Bruford worked with another former member of Yes, Patrick Moraz. Whilst they were never in Yes at the same time both Bruford and Moraz's roots and influences lie in jazz and it was in the mid eighties that the two musicians came together to record two albums of eclectic drum and keyboard based music. Both Music For Piano And Drums and Flags were well-received and included diverse material such as the Max Roach composition This Drum Also Waltzes and self-written material like Living Space. For the fans who perhaps own the original album on vinyl, now will be a good opportunity to experience this re mastered CD which was originally only available for a very limited time on CD as a very expensive Japanese release. Also included are three bonus tracks, all previously unreleased! soundbite - Bill Bruford/Flags Although neither Bill Bruford nor Patrick Moraz played together at the same time in Yes, both musicians have a great love and more importantly an understanding of jazz.=A0 And these talents are heard to great effect on the album Flags. Originally released in 1985 during a period when King Crimson was in hibernation Bruford and Moraz turn in a stellar performance.=A0 The album was originally released on EG Records in the mid eighties however this re released version will now appear as the debut release on the Winterfold imprint. Winterfold has been formed to release the albums Bill Bruford recorded with his band Bruford in the late seventies and early eighties and also the albums Bill recorded with Patrick Moraz. The album will be re mastered for re release and will include three bonus tracks. soundbite - Gary ************************************************************** Gary Davis The Artist Shop The Other Road http://www.artist-shop.com artshop at artist-shop dot com phone: 877-856-1158, 330-929-2056 fax:330-945-4923 INDEPENDENT PROGRESSIVE MUSIC!!! ************************************************************** Check out the latest Artist Shop newsletter at http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 2004 18:05:24 +0000 From: Dave Allen Subject: P.J.Crook -- Does anyone know how much input P.J.Crook has on choosing which of her paintings are used for a particular CD's packaging? While it looks like a winner, and a must have if I didn't have all of it already, if you are new to Crim and buy this collection, you will be selling yourself and your CD collection short if you don't supplement it with a copy of Lizard. Fripp has alluded to not being all that pleased with Lizard in retrospect, and seems to have picked selections for the guide accordingly. That's his perogative, as it's his work and his picks. Buying CDs that Robert Fripp has been involved with in any capacity has always been a good investment in my leisure time music listening, not to mention spiritual reflection time listening like Let the Power Fall, The Power to Believe and David Sylvian's Gone To Earth, just to name the 3 most potent of many examples. Listening to past KC music has been satisfying and challenging as always and new sensations roll over me when I let go of my past and hear the notes and vibrations crushing and shimmering in fresh new ways. But even fertile farmland needs a fallow season. So, I press on as a musician myself in new directions, bold yet fuzzy, brave but cautionary, free yet disciplined. As far as my desires as an Audience Member for the next KC incarnation, I prefer to think of this as an extended bit of time when the lights have begun to go down and Robert has yet to fire up the Lunar Module. I can be left to wonder what key, what rhythm, what sound effect will hurtle towards me first and prejudge it to death. Or I can listen to my own breath, my own heartbeat and experience the stillness and beauty of a clean, empty, relaxed and ready mind, so that KC gets a clean mental/spiritual canvas to paint on.
