This observation confused me for a = long time, until I finally realized the source of the reviewer's = misunderstanding: Adrian's effects! Adrian has a pedal he calls the = "pixellator," which is basically a backwards delay that changes in = length and pitch via a pedal of some sort. As such, the guitar sound = coming from the speakers rarely (if ever) matches up to what Ade's = fingers appear to be doing! This is intentional, of course, and it = saddens me that the reviewer interpreted this as an occurence of = post-production overdubbing. Other than this, I can find no other = evidence in either disc that any performance was "touched up" in the = studio with new playing. Ryan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 15:52:24 -0400 From: Kevin Holm-Hudson Subject: Fripp in recent press Ryan tells us: >Fripp, as somebody mentioned not too long ago, was number 10 on MOJO's list >of best British guitarists. "21st Century Schizoid Man" was listed as his >best track. I just read another magazine (Guitar World or something), and >they had a list of the best guitar tones...Fripp was on there again, and >for his tone on "21st Century..." again. Which 21CSM? The 1969 lineup's? The 1971 "Earthbound" lineup's version? 1974's? the double trio's? I hear Fripp using different tone in all of those... :-) Seriously, Ryan's point is a good one. It seems that lately RF has been getting "historical recognition" by the rock press, the sort of accolades that would have gone to, say, Segovia in his last years. (At least in Fripp's case the recognition coming his way is not posthumous, thankfully so) Khh -- Dr. Kevin Holm-Hudson Assistant Professor of Music Theory University of Kentucky 105 Fine Arts Building Lexington, KY 40506-0022 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 22:24:37 +0200 From: Carlos Romeo Subject: Subliminal Records Hi! Just got 'Life Extinguisher' (Beach Culture Records 1986), and on 2 of the tracks someone called David Cross plays violin. Not only that but it does sound remarkably like the David Cross that played in KC, particularly the Vaughan-Williamsesque melodies (a contentious term these days I know) on 'Scorch', but also it does sound very much like him on 'Son of Thumbs of a Murderer'. Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this release? Shock Headed Peters have been cruelly under-rated and under documented, so there is no information on that front. any info would be welcome! cheers Roger ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2004 04:22:13 -0400 (EDT) From: the_Roman_Sokal. Subject: ultra-recent live pics of TU & CGT +2/3! hey there; i thought some of you might be interested in seeing some live pics of TU's north american debut at the third eye gathering fest that was in irvine over the weekend. as well, the california guitar trio played with pat mast. on the drums and tony leviticus on the bass. for the end of the first night's TU performance, all the above were onstage for a number. it was a fantastic show (and festival overall) played by all. not one complaint i bet from anyone who was there...ultra-love and thick spacey grooves were in the air! :) here be the link to the pics (taken i believe by a friend of the cgt): http://gallery.thirdeyegathering.com/index.php?cat=4 for the second night's TU performance, more special guests were onhand- butch from the eels, beck etc on additional drums, azam, the singer from vas, as well as a saw player whose name escapes me that played his own set as well. all in all, a magical time. p.s. also spotted at the event- patricia fripp at the merch table! cheers, Roman Sokal rsokal at tapeop dot com "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away". -- Philip K. Frip used to sit and play part 1 into his Echoplex unit and let it repeat over and over adding new parts as it went on. Similar to Chris Squire's The Fish. The Echoplex is a tape device which is in a loop and can be lengthened or shortended. Though early Crimson had a lot of Mellotron use (Most of the strings swells, pipe organs, etc.), I don't believe that Fripp ever used a Mellotron in his Frippertronics. The Mellotron too is a tape based device played by a keyboard where each key has a different taping of the instrument (Basically an early version of the sampler). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2004 21:24:35 EDT From: ExileOnMainStNYC Subject: Neal & Jack & Me I am sending this email to you since there is no other email information on any of the various websites that can help. I realize you may not be the correct people to write about this but I need some help here. I just purchased the DVD of Neal & Jack & Me. The disc states on the back cover that it has the Dolby Surround option. On the audio setup menu of of the disc it gives you the option of Stero or 5.1 Stereo. Both option play in Stero only. And it is not my system setup because everything else in 5.1 plays fine. I purchased this disc from Tower Records in New York I do not want it without the surround feature. Do I return it ot them or do you have more information about this? There is nothing on the websites even mentioning this DVD. But it is not a bootleg copy. I am real dissapointed with it so I would appreciate some help. I just got my 2-DVD set of Uriah Heep during the Byron days "Classic Heep Live From the Byron Era"; there's a lot of John Wetton footage on it. just after the first King Crimson "break" (in fact as you all know it was officially disbanded) Let me tell you that it is really great to see John rocking on stage like that with the Heep. He kicks serious asses here playing and singing like a bastard.really great As an example, on DVD 2 he's singing out loud "Sweet Lorraine" on his knees in a great duet with David. His bass playing is fantastic on the whole sets specially on the "High & Might Tour" (Holland 1976), it contains songs from both, the 1975 (Return to Fantasy) and 1976 (High and Mighty) tours. Great photos of John on both the DVD and the 48 page book. Sound and restoration is not really good but this has been for years something I was looking for when I only have bad quality bootleg CDs and no footage from this John Wetton years.. I do recommend you to get it, it is also UH at, by far, his best period. I also have since the DVD of Ken Hensley and John Wetton, that's also a great thing to have. Musically better. The 2-DVD set is limited to only 3000 copies and as far as I remember there's less than 500. The songs with John Wetton are: RETURN TO FANTASY TOUR 1975 Return To Fantasy Easy Livin' Stealin' Prima Donna Shady Lady killer version!! HIGH & MIGHTY TOUR 1976 Can't keep a good band down High and Mighty medley Midnight Mick's workout Sweet Lorraine ALSO July Morning Montage 1973-1976 Warning: The DVD available in stores is only the first DVD of this set and without the bonus tracks. This special limited edition is not available in the stores. To get this exclusive 2-DVD set go to the UH official site and find the link. http://uriah-heep.com/newa/ As a last comment I want to say that Gary Thain was a very good bassist, what a pity he passed that way. But at least the best bass player back then replaced him. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 10:12:20 +0100 From: Toby Howard Subject: Yet Yet More Crimson-related items for sale on eBay!
