I've just finished the most complete and detailed discography available for Keith Tippett on [or off!] the web. http://www.downtownmusicgallery.com/Main/TippettDiscography.htm It seemed he was the one Crimson member [even if he didn't officially join] at his level of importance ["key" player on three Crimso albums!] who did not have anything resembling a thorough listing available anywhere - I've been to them all I tried the 'Alumni Discography Project' link but it seems it is no longer up. Can you please put a link to this discography on your links page in the meantime? [ We will add a link to this site from ETWeb, with pleasure --Toby ] You are certainly welcome to examine it first to see the all-encompassing nature of this research first. [I've also contributed to John Relph's Fripp discography posted at your site]. As he is one of the few music artists [along with Fripp, Eno, Wyatt, and Laswell] on whom I have every last recording - even unreleased studio material and barest of guest appearances - you may rest assured I did not cobble this from unverified sources, but instead from actual recordings that are in my home. Assuming you agree with the validity of this work, please apprise me of where you do place the link so I may refer to it In any event, please respond to this missive so that may at least know that it did not get lost in the void. I'm aware that the degree of technological sophistication has increased over the years but I've never seen the matter discussed at any length in this forum. I've attached a link to guitar geek which has Fripp's guitar rig from 1997 for those (like me) with a terminal interest in such things. http://guitargeek.com/rigview/396/ Cheers Simon. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Aug 2004 20:03:04 -0700 (PDT) From: david kirkdorffer Subject: Recently musical Dear ETers - With some extra free-time recently uploaded some music from Spring 2003 from my most recent band -- Super-Cannes. I'm baffled what genre this falls into. I jokingly refer to it as techno-hip-hop-prog-rock. Please let me know what genre-boxes you think I ought to be using. :-) Anyway, here's a link to the Super-Cannes music: http://music.download.com/supercannes/3600-8362_32-100343783.html?tag=list And here's a link to some much older and more restful "ambient" music recorded in 1996-1997 from UNDO that might also enjoy. http://music.download.com/undo/3600-8357_32-100333286.html?tag=list I'm curious to know what you think. Has anybody else heard it yet? Eno wrote a strange story about the album's recordingsession. His shoes from Holland caused the album to be 'not as good as it could have been' It could have been heavenly. It could have been a true masterpiece. Now it isn't. Damn! Maybe nobody wants to know. But I want you to know Mr. Eno, it's still a very enjoyable recording! Don't be frustrated. I'd like to hear Robert's comment on the shoe story.... I've been thinking a little of the labeling of musical passages in a rock environment lately... What's the difference between a solo/improvisation and a melody/riff? I have often taken for granted that the an improvised, highlighted passage by an instrument is a solo, and that a pre-written (often highlighted) passage by an instrument is a melody, or a riff. Then I got to thinking about it, because in a discussion about the piece Level Five, most people kept referring to "the two solos", the one by Fripp, which was short, and a longer one by Belew, which follows immediately afterwards. However, there is an important difference between these two passages, which is that Fripp's "solo" isn't improvised, and Belew's is (evidenced by the Eyes Wide Open DVD). I always thought of it as one melody (the Fripp passage), and one solo (the Belew passage). However, when you look at a band like Dream Theater, there are many solos too, BUT, none are improvised (or at least very few). But it is of course obvious that there ARE solos in their music. Most people who've heard Dream Theater can probably pinpoint a solo when it shows up. If the conclusion is that all highlighted passages by an instrument is a solo, what are melodies? Because if alot of people know what a solo is, many more know what a melody is... A smalle issue is the difference between a riff and a melody. Alot of people would find it easy to hear when a metal riff shows up, and when there's a melody. But what makes us sure? Must a riff be chord-based, and in a lower octave, like the classic Iron Man riff by Black Sabbath for example. Not necessarily, in my opinion. Jazz pianist Thelonious Monk for example, liked to include alot of chords into his melodies, to add dissonance and effect. Must a riff be repetitive, where a melody is a bit longer? There's probably no right or wrong, but what's your idea of it? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 10:12:20 +0100 From: Toby Howard Subject: More Crimson-related items for sale on eBay!
