I would like to take this opportunity to invite all you to come and play our King Crimson trivia quiz over at FraKctured.net. There are two rounds of questions up already and we will be playing right over Xmas, with the quiz ending on 13th January 2004. The prize? A wonderful crystal trophy for your troubles. He was fired from the band by Frip for varrious conflicts, but was brought back as an employee when TL was unavailable due to Peter Gabrial commitments. I would supose this ended up as a smoother arrangement, at least until recently. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jan 2004 23:06:34 EST From: Danshowe777 at aol dot com Subject: Re. Guitar practice Paul, As far as Krimsoid stuff, Fracture is a great chop building excercise. It seems to have been written for a good right and left hand workout. When you can play it as smooth as Fripp you've got something going. I find myself getting a bit lazy with the right hand (picking) and Robert is one of the undesputed masters of string skipping. (Along with Hackett). I like to practice playing structured peices instead of mind numbing scales. ANYTHING by Steve Morse will be a challenge!!! I cut my teeth on Steve Howe and learning his stuff was not only good for the hands but but gave me great insights on melody. I have some good tab if you'd like it... There has never been any doubt on this site that Zappa has played an enormous part in a) rock music b) the careers of certain rock stars including AB I'm sure Toby will declare a dead thread soon enough if required. I also tried to find them on the internet but I found only extremely expensive ones. I know there have been reeditions of KC vinyls but I don't know which label did it. I believe the discs may be a little bit cheaper if I contact the label. I wouldn't like to obtain discs which have been listened to for some time, I'm only interested in new ones. If anyone could tell me where can I get KC vinyls I would be really grateful. Please contact me on bgozdz at go2 dot pl Cheers to all, Bartek ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jan 2004 13:20:25 -0500 (EST) From: thedukeofprunes at webtv dot net (Mike) Subject: Gordon Haskell/Bands That Sound Like Crimson Hi Crimfanatics, Hope everyone had a nice and safe new year's eve. I recently discovered something interesting. I heard a cover version of The Who's Circles by a very obscure English band from the 60s called Le Fleur De Lys, which featured Gordon Haskell on bass. Just wondering if anyone out there ever heard this track before (not The Who's version but this one i'm referring too) ? To me it's not bad and rocks a little harder than The Who's version does. Also, anyone ever hear of the one album of Low Flying Aircraft with David Cross? For me that's a rarity in my collection and pretty funny how much i paid for it (I found it at a flea market years ago for like 4 bucks!). My next question to anyone out there is...Have you ever heard any bands that sound like King Crimson? How many and what do you think are the best ones? I have heard many bands that are obviously influenced by King Crimson but I think the best I have heard is Anekdoten. For those who never heard of this band, their from Sweden, lyrics are in English and their music pays a lot of homage to the Red era of Crimson (one of my favorite albums). Please if your going to respond to this post (unless I know you or it's something about my site on Crimson...yeah I know, that was a very cheap plug.), respond to it in E.T. because it is very hard for me to reply back to those who email me from E.T. (I get a lot of emails from folks when I post something in E.T. which is cool but I sometimes get so many I lose track of who I'm talking too lol). Thanks. Something I haven't seen pointed out yet is that Tony's lower-notes-per-square-inch-of-manuscript-paper style is a question of choice, NOT skill. As a mature musician, he never plays a dozen notes, when two or three will do! If you listen to the first couple of Peter Gabriel's albums, Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare, Lou Reed's Berlin, and other examples of young Mr. Levin's playing, you will definitely notice a much "busier" style than we hear now. Even his playing in the '80s incarnation of KC is a lot showier than the things he plays these days. I don't doubt that we'll see and hear the same from Trey as his musical career progresses. You can then convert them to wav files for burning to CD. I highly recommend this site for any Primus fan. The rant that Les Claypool goes into about the "Flasher" is great. I think at one point, after numerous flashes during the show, Les has one of the security guards confiscate the camera and hand it to him, and then states something to the effect that there would be no more flashes. ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #1165 *********************************
