Apparently, I didn't do my homework, & because of always visiting the www.xappa.com website for about 7 years & 'being promised' the video's(As I mentioned in my last post) would 'SOON' be availble on dvd for so long, I lost track not always being at home, I didn't keep up in thr last couple months AND.... The GREAT "Baby Snakes" original 2hr 44min dvd is now availble! Now all you KCriminals whom never saw a young Adrian Belew playing his arse off, & singing FZ's tunes beatuifully, as well as 'performing'! Something he learned the art of under Frank's wing(not as crazily as Steve Vai but stiil)and carries on somewhat to this day with the King! The "Baby Snakes' dvd is available for about $25(US Dollars)and strangely out of all the other GREAT FZ Video's, Gail decided to also release "Does Humor Belong IN Music" which at 57 mins is a great concert as well but is edited! As Frank ALWAYS played for at least 2 & 1/2 hrs!(Except when a riot would occur or a building was burned down!) as everyone surely remembers "Smoke of The Water by Deep Purple; making this recoded history! Anyway this dvd will not be avilable until Jan 13th, & for approximately $15(US) dollars. So maybe mine & everyone else's 'constant emails over the year's(at least since Gail made this option possible. Before that you had to write Barfko-Swill a letter to ask/plead/complain)has started a dvd explosion at Zappa.com & us fans will finally get to see the rest? I know that FZ vaultmeister & great drummer Joe Travers & Dweezil have had to work hard to restore the older video's & also get the analog recorded tracks remixed to Dolby Surround 5.1, & I appreciate that. I just wish Gail would take the couple of short FZ video's like the "Does Humor..." & combine it with another as FZ did with several cd's to save consumer's of his material $. Because so many of his recordings were vinyl LP length, & would fit one 1 cd, such is the same with a couple(maybe 4)of FZ's video's. I understand she wants to make a profit & transfering these old video's to dvd IS expensive but I believe it can still be done cheaply enough & still make The Zappa Family Trust money. So my apologies to Gail for my recent rant. Please, just release the other jems quickly! Lastly, does anyone have any inside info on when the "Schizoid Band" will tour the U.S.?? As is the case with most 'official' band websites, they are woefully behind on their info! I was surprised and interested to find out that this piece was written by Jakko, not by any of the old KC members. Additionally, the intro piece that's performed is also written by him. > Which prompts a thought: Do ET readers now of other > bands that may have > split or reconstituted into two or more units AND > carried related names? This is inviting drifting off topic, but I'll attempt to veer it back in. One that comes to mind immediately that may not be so obvious is the Beach Boys-- after Carl Wilson's death a few years ago, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston carry the band name for their touring jukebox, Al Jardine is touring currently under the name "Al Jardine Family and Friends Beach Band" (including children of members of the Beach Boys and long-time backing band members), though he originally called it "The Beach Boys Family and Friends" before lawsuits), and Brian Wilson (who wrote all the material in the first place) is touring under his own name. Interestingly enough, Wilson's tour seems concerned primarily with breaking the reputation of his music as surf, cars, and girls and pointing out all the great music the Beach Boys did after they left pop music (Dennis Wilson once lamented that people don't have an issue with the Beatles having moved past "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" but don't accept that the Beach Boys have done such). The Beach Boys themselves however, are performing 95% old hits and appear to be an exact opposite of Wilson's tour. This of course does tie back to King Crimson in a way-- is there really a relevance in the Schizoid Band at all? The new piece bears little resemblance to the material they're touring behind, and the band appears still concerned with revisiting the past. I guess that both with the Schizoid Band, the Beach Boys (the group with the name) and the numerous reunion acts that have shown up, it appears the new goal with live performance appears to be nostalgia, and crowds appear to respond to this en masse. This makes no sense to me-- are audiences really happy with nostalgia rather than progress? I'm with Fripp on this boat, I get bored without evolution in the music I listen to. The old records are great, but I don't see how the performers can capture the intent/emotion/feel of the music correctly unless they haven't moved on. My 2 cents anyway. mike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 00:22:10 -0500 From: the Roman Sokal Subject: little news bit on line http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2003/12/1215.cfm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 09:25:46 +0100 From: Roland Bruynesteyn Subject: Do ET readers now of other bands that may have Re the question by David Kirkdorffer: "As one might have always hoped, the Schizoid Band are writing new repertoire (at least one track that is included on the new Schizoid Band Live CD). Which prompts a thought: Do ET readers now of other bands that may have split or reconstituted into two or more units AND carried related names?" The ultimate qualifier would seem to be CSN&Y in all their possible configurations. Neil Young has split all by himself into bands like NY and Crazy Horse, NY & the Stray Gators, NY and the International Harvesters etc. Some old mothers of invention occasionally toured as the Grandmothers (with at least on cd out: Dreams on long play). There are several other tribute bands '/ cd's (Banned from Utopia, the Muffin men, Zappas universe) that refer to work by mr Zappa. One could include duo's, like Simon and Garfunkel: there solo names would obviously relate to the duo name. Roger Waters and Pink Floyd split but play similar repertoire (if they play). Although Waters refers to that "other band" he's proud of the work PF has done under his leadership and seems to claim to be the true successor to Pink Floyd 1969-1983 (with some justification I maight add). For a very short while, there existed a Paragong next to Gong. Is Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman Howe related in name to Yes? There seems to be some fight over the Beach Boys, Familey and friends and other hangers-on... There must be others. More unique in my opinion is the myriad of shapes and forms in which KC has operated: changing all the time while preserving some essence of KC music, including mr Fripp. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 09:48:16 +0100 From: SGIRARD at janbe dot jnj dot com Subject: Sylvian and Fripp on DVD at last ! The Warr parts that Trey wrote and performed certainly *seem* more complicated than Tony's prominent stick parts in earlier compositions, but I know he can handle them. I read somewhere online (can't remember where now) that when TL played with LTE, all his bass parts were done using the stick as he felt he couldn't keep up with the others speedwise on a standard bass. So, comparing the two as far as speed or notes per bar goes, then using the stick, TL has the chops no question. IMHO of course, TL has done, and will continue to do, his best work in and around the KC format. I'm sad to see Trey leave, BUT, I'm sure happy to see TL return to the fold. After the down of thinking RF was going to retire and KC was going to cease to exist, it's a new high and a sense of expectation that comes with the news of TL's return. Sounds like the first two songs you heard were "Mechanical Bride" and "Serpentine Song". I too was struck by how similar in structure Mechanical Bride is to 21CSM when he played it live. Curiously, I had not made the connection from the studio version on his latest album ("To Watch The Storms"), despite it being very close to the live version. Can't say I have noticed a connection between Serpentine Song and ITttW (despite the flute). Since you have not followed him since Genesis, I strongly recommend his album "Darktown" (released in 1999, I think). It needs a few plays to appreciate its subtleties, but I am now of the opinion that it is one of those rare masterpieces that only crop up a few times per decade. There were only a couple differences: someone once told me that a minute or so of "Neurotica" was edited out for some reason on the VV disc, and "One Time" and "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream" were left off (presumably because they were included on the Broadway half of the album). Bredonborough does not exist . However, Bredon Hill is visible from many parts of Worcestershire and neighbouring Gloucestershire. Bredonborough is a good generic name for villages within sight of the hill. Indeed, a boat trip down the Avon gives a fine view of Bredon Hill from many different angles. The village of Bredon is in Worcestershire - not Gloucestershire as suggested by Patrick Gaudin. Robert and his wife Toyah (yes she is the voice on Teletubbies!) own (or perhaps owned as I think they have moved) a house in a small Worcestershire village. A good friend of mine spent a summer working in a pub in the quaintly named village of Wyre Piddle a couple of years ago. My friend lives on a narrowboat (which at the time was moored on the Avon outside the pub) and told me that he had seen Robert and Toyah in a rowing boat on the Avon one summer's afternoon. No! he did not photograph them or call out "Schizoid" to them, he treated them with the quiet respect of the true narrowboater. The violin solo in Lark Tongues in Aspic Part 1 does indeed resemble some of the violin parts of The Lark Ascending. David Cross is reported to have said that he heard The Lark Ascending for the first time some time after LTIA had been recorded. I'm struck again, and want to speak. Why does anyone who invests in a product think that this gives them any rights over the producer of the product (or even the manner of the production of the product)? I work for a firm of printing and packaging manufacturers. The exclusive purchasers of our plant labels (for instance) to use on their product have the exclusive right to decide how that product may look, may even define some of the ways in which it may be produced. When I worked for a HiFi company (Audiolab) our customers have absolutely no right to tell us what to produce, how to produce, and where we make it available to them. An intelligent producer will listen to the feedback from the customers that have bought into it. However those customers have no rights over the way in which that company might create or make available it's products. In similar ways, whilst we have all made some investment in vinyl, CD's, concerts, travel to concerts (I myself had a quite expensive weekend earlier this year travelling Europe to catch KC twice and Yes once), it does not give us any ownership of the band, nor the members. What possible right to be able to engage with Robert or the others can be conferred by paying a few pounds or dollars for a disk of plastic, or even a few more for a ticket to a concert? A concert involves the presentation of the artist's music for our pleasure. We have purchased the right to be present and enjoy the live production of that sound. We have not bought the right to expect any personal engagement with the creatives before, during, or after. Neither do we have any right to be able to take away any record of that performance (in pictures or sound). It is about oneness with the performance for the duration of the performance and the delight in the recollection of that experience in the future. How could that experience possibly be captured in 2 dimensional images, or a recording. The concert is much more than the sum of the images in front of your eyes, and the sounds entering your ears. Give the guy a break! If maybe you were able to negotiate "ownership of the KC product for a period of time" (pace a record contract) then you might have legal means to "own" , but you'd still not have moral rights to an artistic creation that is so much more than just some digital information on a computer, tape or CD. I personally would love to find some way to engage with Robert that would be meaningful, and rewarding. But it could only be rewarding to me, if I knew that instead of intruding on him, I had found some way of adding in a positive way to his experience of the world and it's foibles; and knew that he walked away from the encounter more content/pleased than when he entered it. If I ever think of something that would do it, then maybe I'll try it. But I'm damn sure that "Hi Robert, really love your music" is not going to do it! (But Robert, if you read this, I do, and my life is more content and rewarded for the presence of RF and KC and their output, than it would have been without). What can possibly be the value of knowingly upsetting someone who does not want to be disturbed??? And as far as European concerts are concerned... I have the right to work where I wish. If I don't want to be there, I don't have to be. Why should it be different for the performer? Of course as a UK resident, I hate the prospect of inter-continental travel to hear some of my favourite music live, but is that worse than an Antipodean fan nearly always having to travel? I'm just damn lucky to have some of the best music in the world (I mean KC and many more) regularly played in the UK over the years, and nearby in Europe. Goodness knows where that all came from. It started with just a brief aim of a sentence or two. Bye all! Back to lurking Peter ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2003 17:48:34 -0500 From: "Matthew K. This is a newsletter about King Crimson. OK, Zappa was great. (I even saw him once.) Now drop it already! Can't you find some other thread to endlessly ruminate over? Get a Life. Matthew K. Does anyone know what it is that Bill Bruford is using to make the sound in Heartbeat and Neurotica (among other songs)? It's kind of like a cross between a wood block and a triangle - a sort of metallic clink sound. Any help would be appreciated.
