Andre ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 2003 13:02:33 -0500 From: "Robert Bennett" Subject: The Vicar Hello ETers: I would have to agree that The Vicar is Brian Eno. He did refer to himself as a non-musician (in fact Fripp would joke about the fact that he had little labels on his keyboards identifying certain notes or chords). Also, Anthony Phillips left Genesis not because he was a "non-musician" but because he had a terrible bout with stage fright. Then, consider Eno's complete name: Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno. The religious reference may in fact tie into the code name "Vicar"? I'd have to say the Vicar is in fact Eno. Bob Bennett ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 2003 11:15:47 -0500 From: "Jordan Clifford" Subject: KC on SNL I don't think I posted this before, but I wonder if anyone else caught the Saturday Night Live sketch where Will Farrell played Satan, the sketch had something to do with Garth Brooks playing a struggling musician and selling his soul for a hit song, and when the devil appears they blare Larks Tongues in Aspic part 1 i believe. Unless my memory is confusing part 1 with part 2, but I'm almost postitive it is the crazy, screaching part in the opening of LTIA 1. It was awesome and yet pathetic to be the only one who knew from the first soaring guitar line what song it was and why they used that particular music. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 2003 08:02:14 EST From: JacobVB at aol dot com Subject: Re: Travel Weary Capricorn Having studied astrology for many years, I can shed some light on this question. I first heard this song in the boxed set when it came out, and smiled in recognition with what was being said. One New Age notion is that we reincarnate through the zodiac signs in order. Sagittarius is the sign preceeding Capricorn, and Sagittarius rules long distance travel. Sagittarii do indeed seem to be ever on the move, travelling to learn about the world/universe. Thus, after a lifetime on the move, one would reincarnate as a Capricorn, an Earth sign, to hopefully put down some roots and apply what was learned; certainly after a life as a Sag, feeling travel weary. Any other Crimsoids out there interested in astrology as well? Nothing wrong with a shadow, ya know! Fans, if you really don't like it, find another guitarist to google after, there are plenty of them that want your attention! MARK, I would think that the primary concern here is that if THIS FRIPP is not involved, then it is not recognised by him & SID SMITH as a "ProjeKct" or fractalisation of KING CRIMSON. On the strength of BILFORD/LEVIN: UPPER EXTREMITIES, I am prepared to challenge this notion, since I find that their album is track-for-track excellence, whereas PROJEkCT 2: SPACE GROOVE is an album I have only managed to audit only twice since it first became available, the 2nd time virtually under duress, as with their live ProjeKcts box set recording. As for "a FRIPP-less CRIMSON", do we not have that in 21st CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND, a (re-)union that THIS FRIPP endorsed long before its inception, even going so far as to suggest his friend MR. STEVE HACKETT as a viable replacement? Be seeing you! Certainly not since the double duo. While some of the previous stuff with Belew was actually "songs" per se-- "One Time", "Heartbeat"-- I tend to see the work nowadays more as pieces of music, and the vocals are just another instrument. I could have actually lived with an all-instrumental album on the Power to Believe, and I tend not to "hear" the lyrics, except for the sound that the vocals make. And that's no shot at Ade; I suspect he sees it that way too." I agree. I listened the lyrics when their was made by especially R. Palmer-James. But nowadays vocals tend to be more or less just another instrument. I too have actually preferred totally all-instumental The Power to Believe Petri Haapa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 17:35:09 -0500 From: "David" Subject: Eyes Wide Open But Occasionally Blinking - being naughty with the DVD... Accoustics were good, and sound level was loud, but not too loud like it was in November 2001 Phoenix visit. The opening act, Pygmy Love Circus was appreciably louder, so KC's more tolerable volume level seemed a conscious choice. Pygmy Love Circus did a cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man which was fun, but the rest consisted of same-sounding speed metal screamed by a 6 foot five kilt-wearing profanity screaming vocalist who liked to run around the stage with clubs, toy guns and a ventriloquist's doll. They did seem to have a small following present. The King Crimson set list started with Power to Believe acapella with Adrian processing his voice through a keyboard of some kind which he used on a couple of other occasions during the show. Immediately following was Level Five, then Prozakc Blues with Adrian pulling out a bottle neck slide. Also played were TCOL, Dinosaur, Elektrik, Power to Believe Part Two, One Time, Facts of Life, Happy (etc) and set closer Larks' 4. I may have left one or two out, but Eyes Wide Open was not played on what is billed as the Eyes Wide Open Tour. Encores were Thrush (very heavy at beginning giving way to Trey's lyrical improv) and an exuberant Red. In addition to his Warr guitar, Trey is now using a touch guitar placed on its back on a stand like a pedal steel guitar. He sometimes played the Warr with his left hand while playing the other touch guitar with his right. Pat has added even more accoustic drums to his set and looks to be balanced about 50/50. The band was dead on all night. It was one of the most satisfying shows I have seen by any band and surpassed the fine performance in Phoenix in November, 2001. Everyone seemed relaxed and happy to be there. The tasteful, low key laser light show had lots of calming blues and purples and seemed to fit a mood of looseness reflected in fresh arrangements of all the material that left room for improvisation within the tight structure of each of the pieces. Every song was played somewhat differently than I had previously heard it performed. I can't say enough about how good the show was, except if this one ends up on KCCC you should buy it. Mr. Fripp sat to the side, as usual, but was not totally in the dark and was even laser-spotlighted during some of his solos and soundscapes. He seemed really happy with how things were going as he toe-tapped along with the music. Pat had a big grin on his face all night. Trey was elegant and cool, and Adrian was energized, both vocally and instrumentally. At the end, all four came out to the edge of the stage and acknowleged the applause with waves and smiles. I sure wish they were playing again tonight. See these guys if you can. John Moshier. ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #1153 *********************************
