This was a show about a private detective played by Nicholas Ball and was made in 1978 & 79, and shown on ITV. The section of Starless was used as another character beat Hazell's car - Triumph Stag if my memory isn't playing tricks - with a baseball bat or similar instrument. Paul Baker ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Sep 2003 16:10:35 +0000 From: jliss at speakeasy dot net Subject: Stick in Dune film Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck does indeed play the stick with a nice gourd on the bottom of it in the David Lynch 1984 version of Dune, but you'll only see that scene in the half-assed extended version shown on television. Here's one article which articulates the problems with the longer television version of the film: http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s72dune.html A newer television version of Dune has the baliset as more of a lyre-looking thing. It's described in the book as having nine strings as well as sympthetic strings like a sitar, so that might be a little closer. But the Stick looked cooler. I saw a Stick performance at the Burning Man festival a couple days ago (burningman.com). The solo performer used a Grand Stick (12-string) and seemed to be pretty talented. His treble leads were nice but unfortunately, the bass side didn't come through clearly. The instrument definitely presents some technical challenges for amplification (needing two amps as it does.) Much appreciation for the FREE service of the newsletter I've been getting for some eight or nine years! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2003 22:26:05 +0600 From: "Alex Zaitsev" Subject: Re: Crimson in a Russian TV show Hi, all! I thought Cross left/was kicked out after this final tour was over. I saw them on May 1st of the tour in the Felt Forum in NYC, and Cross was very much there. If there was something lacking in these performances, why didn't they release recordings of some other shows he was stronger on when they originally put this out? Could someone enlighten me on this point? Matthew K. Smith ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2003 16:12:10 -0700 From: "Pablo Velasco L." Subject: What is it with this band? What is it with this band? I heard that one of guitarists does not like to be seen playing in it. When they are playing live concerts he keeps hiding shyly in the dark and does not want to be photographed playing in such band. He keeps this activity far away from home and neighbors who could actually recognize him (old schoolmates, relatives, in-laws, etc.). Nothing in his costume or the way he behaves or walks around town gives a hint to his fellow countrymen of his involvement in a rock group. When time comes to prepare a record and go to a studio, he goes as far as possible from home, to another country, another continent, into a basement. A collaborator, apparently a close friend to the mentioned guitarist, keeps his involvement securely undercover with a pseudonym. This pseudonym is used even when his work has to be credited in the sleeve of the records released by this band. A collaborator to this collaborator uses also a pseudonym in all matters related to this band. It is apparent that this band hired a top "engineer" to produce their latest record and some other tracks. He agreed for some reason, but evidently not for the prestige this could bring to his career. You guessed: the condition was that his real name would not be mentioned. In the sleeve of the record you will only find a pseudonym. What is it with this band? Apparently it is known by a name that is not the real name of the band but only a pseudonym. The pseudonyms chosen give a certain hint of the kind of persons behind them: king, vicar, punk, machine . Clues on the matter will be highly appreciated. By the way, the music produced by this band is the best on earth, not at all something to be ashamed of. Best regards Ehrr. Not bad for a >man that I understand RF once described as not even knowing how to hold a >guitar pick correctly. David Kirkdorffer As good as Beck's "You Had It Coming" and "So What!" are, I must say that his brand-new cd, simply called "Jeff", is even hotter. This cd and TPTB are both incredible, dense works. KC and ol' Jeff - all old fogies, some would say - could show all these current "flavor-of-the-day" acts what can be accomplished with some - well, lots - of hard work and creativity. Beck and KC have real desire to satisfy their own musical desires despite the fact that, by doing so, they are limiting their income. Being a musician, I applaud this. >From Eric Tamm's book, available online at http://www.progressiveears.com/frippbook/contents.htm..., "Eric Clapton he found "quite banal," while Jeff Beck he could "appreciate as good fun." I think many KC fans will appreciate the Beck cd -- very diverse, from emotional playing with a real orchestra to speaker-rattling, thunderous Rock & Roll, from blues to techno. Lots of soloing this time around, too! Can't wait for the KC DVD...I'm drooling! Quickly: > Perfectly simple. He made the complaint in public on ET and I replied in > kind. No, it was your decision (or someone at ET's) to publish the letter as opposed to replying personally, and to respond publicly the way you did. Responding to me via the newsletter rather than privately was also your decision, not mine. [ FYI what gets published in ET is my decision, and mine alone. -- Toby ] >If I replied to him privately I have no way of knowing if my reply ever >got to him. Huh? His complaint was that he didn't get ET, what made you think he would be able to read your response if you put it in the newsletter? >The complaint is not with ET, me, Toby or anyone else. It's with >Hotmail/MSN. He obviously didn't know that or I'm sure he would have complained to them. But instead of acknowledging that you seem to have opted to take it very personally. >Secondly, we at ET are not asking for payment for the work we do. To take >my words into that context is being disingenuous. You inappropriately brought it up as a point of argument, that was my point. >I would ask all ETers to reflect on the SHEER COMPLEXITY of managing an >email-newsletter in today's spam-saturated world. We at ET do our best to >cope. (from Toby) PLEASE understand that I couldn't agree more. I totally appreciate the effort that goes into this, and I'm not being critical of your administrative efforts. I was just rather taken back by your (as a representative of ET) public lambasting of a frustrated customer (as a representative of all of us). Heaven forbid I or anyone else should ever ask a question about the goings on of the newsletter, will we also be hung out to dry? If I may, it probably would have been better if your initial response was something along the lines of: "We at ET understand your frustration, please know that we work very hard in bringing this newsletter to you. After much investigation, we've found the problem to be with Hotmail (etc.)...We apologize for the inconvenience, but thank you for letting us know of the situation, we will hopefully have a solution soon." That's it...let's just acknowledge there was some rudeness and inappropriateness all the way around and get back to the band... Prates I suppose that my question stirred a negative reaction on Mr. "best regards" Rick, as he wrote: "So I asked a dumb question, huh? Since when is thirsting for knowledge and learning more about great things dumb? How do you think that since I asked a question about a piece of music from 30 years ago, that I neglect and abhor new music by the same group? Since I'm 17 years old, how can I have even been stuck in the past with blind, unchanging adoration for a short period of time in a band's history? Since I received many reply emails and responses to my question, how is the GD boxset inaccessible to Crimheads reading this newsletter? Why do you sound inane?" YOU asked? I assumed that I was asking about it. If you did so before, then, my apologies, but I haven't seen it. Was it exactly the same question? If so, at least it proves that I was the one sounding inane, not to mention the fact that I've repeated a question. And you've played the dozens in here by taking anything personally as well. Let's say we're even, then. Now, the GD boxset is not completely innacessible to Crimheads, nor have I stated such a thing in such a drastic manner--it is indeedly acessible for some people; but a good sum of people don't have it. Just look around the reviews in here--in regards to ET posters, since once again, I wasn't even talking about the "crimheads reading this newsletter". Guess that's when Beefheart says "you've had too much to think". And lastly, since it's now known that you have nothing to do with my post--which was promptly replied to, giving me the chance of acknowledging Mr. Vargan, who pointed out the exact timings for me; thank you, Vargan--the explanation to my ironic remarks concerning Crimheads stuck in the past, can be seen in the newsletter itself (the "dead threads" as an example), and the laughable words from many fans addressed to Fripp on the DGM site itself--where else would have I known about his statemement about moving on? Also, by personal experience with older Crimheads. I suppose you can consider yourself lucky for not being one of them. But then again, you're 17, so this is quite obvious. I had only played it on my home PC and had had no problem at all until now. I recently purchased a DVD player, and although this the 'Deja VROOOM' DVD is Region 0, when I try to play it, my DVD player sees/reads it as NTSC (the American TV format). Does anybody know how to change/modify this to PAL (European TV format)? Like I said, I bought this item in the UK brand new at HMV for #16.99, but the picture comes out black and white only. I believe this is normally the case when viewing NTSC DVDs. Any help would be much appreciated.Perhaps private replies would be more appropriate. They are incredible musicians with a lot of theatrical appeal as well as being free to explore the melding of many styles and influences with superb musicality. Well worth a listen - and even better live. I know at least one of the members is a Crimson listener (although I haven't been able to coerce him into going to a show). Check out their website for future "museum openings and closings." Members of SGM can also be seen doing other projects: Moe!kestra! (avant classical orchestral mayhem - performances usually available only in the San Francisco Bay Area, Oregon or Seattle), Faun Fables (acoustic duo featuring Nils as well as Dawn - an incredible singer/songwriter), Tin Hat Trio or 2 foot Yard (Carla Kihlstedt projects). Definitely performers that deserve a wider audience! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2003 02:54:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Rikard Grankvist Subject: Fripp/Belew Identification Thanks, FC Prates. A note though: isn't the use of volume pedals an integral part of of both guitarists' playing? There's gotta be a volume pedal on the Dinosaur solo for example. Well thanks anyway, that was some additions to what others sent to me. However, others say that Fripp's been using the NST (New Standard Tuning, C G D A E G) almost exclusively since Red. Does Belew use any altered tunings? /R ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2003 14:59:13 -0500 From: "Nick Spannaus" Subject: California Guitar Trio - Extensive Gig Review Austin, Texas.
