I think electronic music is a great thing. but where is electronic music >going... I think KC is more an electronica band than a pop/rock band, and I think the direction KC took is the direction electronica in its most creative part will go. And don't forget that the first ambient recording ever made was (No Pussyfooting) by Fripp/Eno. >Any Autechre fans out there? ITs easy to find similarities between them >and King Crimson but they are two totally different genres. Yes. I think Autechre is a band everyone who likes KC of ProjeKcts era should try. Two common things: electronic sounds and strong avant-guarde taste. Other electronica band worth to listen is Download - sometimes it's quite undistinguishable from ProjeKct 3. I am also trying to write computer-based music but found much more fun to mix it with guitar playing (idea stolen from KC, you understand) - I feel sometimes that it's the most interesting direction (mix of electronic groove and "classical" instruments) that music could take in maybe next decade. And - for those living in Russia and not only for them: "Rou2" - Nikolay Roubanov of Auktyon and Polina Rounovskaya - pre-made electronic sounds plus the best sax/winds in Russia (my opinion) and quite unusual vocals. STRONGLY recommended. Anton ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 19:34:20 -0400 From: "David" Subject: We'll miss you Dan! For those interested, it's in the January 2003 issue, in the column Detour ... " King Crimson 'Prog' rock spawned Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis; and here is the band who spearheaded this most inventive movement ...." A very favorable and appreciative overview of the record. Me and my mate burst out laughing when we first heard this many years ago. It's that good. Fashion (Bowie): Another one of those Fripp solos where it sounds (to me) like it is being reinvented at every moment - as if each note is the start of something new. The Night Watch - gorgeous. I've always wondered whether this was composed or improvised. Distributed Being (Eno) - Blistering solo and every note counts. Great chorus effect as well - really smooth and really distorted at the same time. He should have used this patch more. Talking Drum (Live 95). Immense power. In A Cloud Forest (Fripp/Summers) On Triumph (That Which Passes). Short beautiful soundscape that makes my stomach go funny. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 00:33:55 +0100 From: "paul welsh" Subject: rock percussion A little well placed aggression never goes amiss in quality rock. Kc recordings seem to run the percussion gamut. In t he early days their studio efforts suffered from a lack of "edge" whereas now it is an inherent feature of mixing desk recordings. Who would have thought that the mark 3 line up could rock so hard if the only evidence were the Islands album, but recent live releases of that band approach the intensity and sheer ballsiness of the Bruford/Wetton line-up. But the real deal came with the double trio. I'm not american but even a brit has to call the drum attack on those albums "awesome". Is that the first time two drummers have been used consecutively since Hawkwind's "Warrior on the Edge of Time"? Does anyone out there play in a two kit (as opposed to kit and percussion) band? Whilst I'm atit does anyonr know of the reasons behind the non-continuation of the double trio kc? With respect to "Stamperdanny" and his racist post, I think he was trolling and he got lots of bites. No one could seriously mean all that nonsense. Reminds me of the "Tony Levin is overrated and no damned good" post from a year or so ago. Maybe someone could have some fun with a "women are inferior servile creatures who aren't discerning enough to listen to King Crimson" post. Of course, my wife thinks I am a sub human devient because I like Bob and the boys. Have fun. John. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 14:59:09 EDT From: DrBaht at aol dot com Subject: Re: so many "best drummers" > The best thing is: if we look for a drummer to play a composition by BrianFerneyhough, Iannis Xenakis or some other contemporary composer: forget alldrummers ever mentioned in ET, as likely none of those would get throughsome of these composer's more complex scores (or it would take them a wholeday to go through a ten-minute-piece :o) So I guess Colaiuta, Oxley, Bonham,Donati, Boernsen and even Tommy Ramone might be "worthless" in this contextand there are hords of classical trained drummers who in THIS case are much"better" than all of those. < I take that last sentence as an uneducated "guess" as applied to Vince Colaiuta, since the word "worthless" and the last name "Colaiuta" have no right to be in the same sentence in any way. Vinnie Colaiuta has proven on countless recordings and live performances that he can handle anything that is asked of him. I have heard him play immensely free (and quite successfully, without noodling or out of context shit) and I have heard his work of the most difficult of charted music. Quite simply, the guy can master any style of drumming , punctuating it with his own signature sound. -bahtology runs amok ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 23:00:15 -0400 (EDT) From: thedukeofprunes at webtv dot net (Mike Worden) Subject: new king crimson site new king crimson web site. let me know what you think. http://community.webtv.net/thedukeof prunes/ALLTHINGSCRIM http://community.webtv.net/thedukeofprunes/ ALLTHINGSCRIM ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 2003 21:04:44 +0100 From: "Webmaster" Subject: Win a signed copy of Ian Wallace's Happiness (With Minimal Side Effects) Another month has passed and a new competition has appeared on the FraKctured website for you all to have a go at. We've also announced the winner of last month's competition for the signed Tony Levin CD. According to this, Tony is playing Quebec on 12th July with the California Guitar Trio. As phenomenal a bass player as Tony is, even he cannot be in two places at once. I therefore deduce that the promoters of the North Sea Jazz Festival have got their wires crossed and that Trey is playing with Crimson on 12/07/03. As an aside, all this speculation is beginning to bore me. My only concern is getting to see Crimson play on mainland Europe this year (Paris being the most likely option at present) since there don't seem to be any gigs in the UK. OK, here's a couple of Fripp solos that come to mind--but let's skip that "greatest" stuff, OK? I haven't seen these mentioned. "The Sailor's Tale". Has there ever been-before or since- another guitarist who sounds remotely like this? "Book of Saturday". "We'll Let you Know". This listener was overwhelmed with the incredible power of Wetton's furious funky riffing over a couple of listens, but one of fripp's coolest jams was eventually revealed. "Schizoid Man" at Providence ( 6/30/74)- I still think this is actually Asbury Park, as I was lucky enough to be there and remember being blown away by that opening trill or pull-off or whatever you call it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 16:33:45 +0400 From: "Vladimir Kalnitsky" Subject: The Russificated King Crimson Dear ETers, I'm glad to inform you that "The Russificated King Crimson" site is back to the web. I=B4m sorry for my english... It=B4s always an interesting discussion--- who is the best in anything?= Talking about sport, everything is clear- the best is the Fastest, Strongest One. But which rules should I use, when I want to compare one musician to another??? I never know. Lots of drummers have an outstanding technical abilities (Mr. Weckl, Mr. Chambers...), lots of them have unbelievable feeling (Nick Mason, Phil Collins), there is also a plenty of drummers who use both... Actually, I play the saxophone, and even don=B4t know, who is my favourite saxophone player. And, please, let=B4s don=B4t forget the fact, that great musicians are everywhere. Here in Czech Republic, in Germany, in Argentina...I am lucky to know personally the best Czech bass player, Vladimir Guma Kulhanek, who is pretty famous here, but have you ever heard (about) him before? I, for example, don=B4t know any Spanish piano player... (...well, my favourite bass player is Mr.T.L., but...) So, my contribution to this discussion can be a list of my favourite drummers. Here we go: Bill Bruford Vinnie Colaiuta Manu Katche Neil Peart Peter Erskine Lewis Nash Aynsley Dunbar Billy Hart Adam Nussbaum William Kennedy Bruce Cox Ask me tomorrow, who did I forget to mention now.
