Many thanks to all of you who sent name suggestions. If you haven't yet done so -- please do! Keep them coming! Has anyone out there heard anything about there being a new David Cross album out? Yes, it's called "The Big Picture". Pretty good, pretty intense and disturbing. Better than Memos from Purgatory. A friend of mine said that supposedly there was and that David was touring (he also supposedly played "Exiles", IMHO, one of the best Crimso songs of all time!). Rumor or Fact? Fact. [[ Yes, a number of you have suggested this! -- Toby ]] On another note, the station in Madison, WI that was playing "God's Monkey" for a while is now playing "Jean the Birdman." The latter seems to be getting more airplay, and the song is really growing on me... I haven't even called to request it (yet)! This station also plays "Heartbeat" from "Young Lions" from time to time; always interesting to hear Belew's different take on the song. What is the > tuning? What are the claimed advantages? The most obvious advantage is that your range is increased on both the low and high ends. Another plus is that you have to get rid of all your old licks and reinvent your playing, unless you're already a stick player or a cellist. Chords are a whole new ball game of course--many of the old voicings are gone, but then you have a new set of possibilities to work with. ... and it's really interesting to see other people try to play your guitar. Disadvantages: Yeah, maybe you break more strings, but if you customize your gauges a bit, it's not that bad. What I do (instead of buying the custom Guitar Craft set) is to buy medium gauge strings, use the low 4, throw away the 2nd string (or use it to floss your teeth), use the 1st string as your 2nd (E) string, and buy an extra light 1st string for the G. As for the minor 3rd, I don't like it that much. I would be nicer if it were a 5th, but I don't think you could stretch the 1st string to a B without some major engineering. RE: tuning breaking strings: well, of course reasonable gauges are necessary! I was always meaning to get into the first semester Physics labs and make a chart of tension vs tuning for a good handful of strings - a typical set in typical tuning has more or less the same tension on all six strings - yes, about the same for high E to low E - and so we could cut out on some uneconomical experimentation by trying to achieve the same for a CGDAEG tuning. Anyone actually using such a tuning report on their guages as a starting point? I am thinking of buying a second guitar to use as this tuning only. "ADRIAN BELEW: Extremely Unplugged Tour 1993" This is Adrian Belew as you've never seen him - just Adrian, his guitar and dobro, alone onstage. Here is your chance to get closer to Adrian than ever before as he performs acoustic versions of past and new material and engages in conversation with the audience. In addition to the performance onstage, Adrian has recorded an album of acoustic music. Entitled, "THE ACOUSTIC ADRIAN BELEW", the cd will be sold at the concerts and through the Fan Club only. This special, limited edition disc will not be sold in stores, and once it is sold out, it is gone. Mail order details later in this newsletter. It's been a busy year since the Inner Revolution Tour wrapped up with a concert in Italy. Adrian returned from the tour and took enough time off to marry Martha shortly before Christmas 1992. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Belew! He has also been busy working in the studio on his own material for a new record label (details on this in the next newsletter), as well as sessions with Sara Hickman, Nine Inch Nails, and his old buddies Paul Simon and most recently, Laurie Anderson. There have been seminars, conferences, and another trip to Mexico with CAIFANES (whose album is now certified platinum). There as a King Crimson rehearsal and writing session, with plans for the full-tilt reunion (album and tour) in 1994. Adrian has been so busy, in fact, that he had to give up on his plan to personally write this newsletter because he simply ran out of time. He will have plenty to say, however, when you see him face-to- face on the Extremely Unplugged Tour: 9/27: Club Metronome Burlington, VT 9/28: Iron House Music Hall Northampton, MA 9/30: The Paradise Boston, MA 10/1: The Bottom Line (2 shows) New York City 10/2: Theatre of Living Arts Philadelphia, PA 10/6: Club Bene Sayreville, NJ 10/7: Max's on Broadway Baltimore, MD 10/8: Wolftrap Vienna, VA 10/9: Grafitti Showcase Pittsburgh, PA 10/11: Kilgore's Cincinnati, OH 10/13: The Icon Buffalo, NY 10/14: Milestone's Rochester, NY 10/15: The Agora Cleveland, OH 10/16: Majestic Theatre Detroit, MI 10/18: Phoenix Hill Tavern Louisville, KY 10/19: The Vogue Indianapolis, IN 10/21: The Cubby Bear Chicago, IL 10/22: Shank Hall Milwaukee, WI 10/23: (TBA) Minneapolis or Madison, WI 10/24: (TBA) Madison, WI or Minneapolis, MN One final note -- we unearthed a very small number of the first Bears album on CD, and can make them available on a first-come first serve basis.
