I have always wondered why it was not used everywhere and not on the CD reissues. Their mistake, I guess. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 08:24:25 -0400 From: eric dot johnson at dpsnc dot net Subject: Looping cellist Perhaps the discussion is referring to David Darling on ECM who's done some work with Terje Rypdal. I've heard Darling play cello solo and in duos and ensembles where looping or overdubbing of his instrument creates a layered, spacious sound that borders, to my ears, on vapidity. My wife doesn't complain about him. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 14:22:36 -0300 From: "Campisi, Jose Antonio Salvador" Subject: family tree Good evening, I am a fan from Argentina. This is a really great CD that any Crimhead should love. I hadn't paid any attention to Trey until I saw the band on the last couple of tours, and now I finally realize what a great musician he is. How do "Third Star" and "Joy of Molybdenum" compare ? >[If I may chip in, I think "The Joy of Molybdenum" is superb. Tangerine Dream meets Crimson meets Jeff Beck meets Philip Glass meets ... erm... I know that Adrian toured w/ Bowie at least twice. I have the "Stage" LP on vinyl (I know it's a chore to find on disc). But I can't find any live recordings from the Sound & Vision Tour ('91?). I remember they even played "Pretty Pink Rose" which showed up on a Belew release that came out about the same time. Any help? Thanks! I started listening to Crimson in 1981, when I was 15 (don't do the math!). I started listening to Discipline in 1981, when I was 26 (go ahead and do the math). My son was born the same year - he grooved to Elephant Talk and Discipline (his early favorites, along with Shock the Monkey by Peter Gabriel) at a very early age. >12. Beat This album has nothing that I care for. The beauty of this world is that everyone is different. I for one am very glad we live in the same world as Neurotica, The Howler, Sartori in Tangier, and especially Requiem. And none of the other tracks are all that terrible. - S. np: Firesign Theatre, Let's Eat!: Radio Prison in Peace and War scottst at ohsu dot edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 13:24:33 -0400 From: "Mark" Subject: KC live video. It may be old topic here, but, anyone familiar with the KC live in Japan video, circa 1984? I love this video and bought it unseen, from the store. I've turned probably 30 friends on to KC as a result of them seeing it at my home. Any other viddy's I should be aware of? thanks, and keep up the great info. clamshoe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 21:37:50 +0000 From: "Dale cleary" Subject: Hi everyone Does anybody know of Bills new DVD Footlose in New York? Features a fantastic live recording with David Sylvian & Robert Fripp with Michael Brook, Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto. Includes a 32 page full color booklet, a limited edition 24 carat gold CD and a special hard slipcase to hold them First, I'm wondering if it has any collector value. Second, what are some opinions on the recoding. I mostly never criticize music on the first listen. I've found that much of the music that has staying power (with me) took a few listens to grab hold. I will say that Sylvians vocals are a bit vibrato (at first listen). Lastly, what are some opinions of recordings in which Fripp contributed. I am vary familiar with Eno/Fripp, Summers/Fripp, and such, but never listened to recordings by 'The Damned' or 'Van Der Graaf'. I would be interested to know of that "Must Hear" recording in which Fripp contributed. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 12:51:41 -0400 From: "Steven Paul Rewa B. S." Subject: Tim's post in ET '07 Sorry If I'm late on this post, but I'm behind in reading ET. I read Tim's list of conversation starters and felt like I'd get in on #3, not because it has any real merit, but I think it's a funny story. I used to be (and think I still am) subscribed to a Jethro Tull Digest, much like this one, called the St. Cleve Chronicle, after the Thick as a Brick newspaper. (Saw Tull last weekend by the way. Still my favorite by a long shot.) Anyway, the really popular thread for the newbies there was "I like Jethro Tull. What else do I like?" King Crimson usually came up after Focus and before Traffic. I didn't pursue it at all though, until I was really drunk at a party one time and the host put Discipline in the player. I asked who we were listening to and upon finding out said "Oh right, I'm supposed to like them." I think that's still my favorite album as well. Love 'em both! I first heard Can on a compilation from a friend. Years later I bought Ege Bamyasi, and it had to grow on me for a while. When I bought Future Days, I was hooked, and bought everything I could find. I'd highly recommend starting with that or Soon over Babaluma... they're easier to digest, but then you'll want all of the earlier releases. I've now been into them for about ten years, and I hear their influence all over the place - amazing for such a seemingly little-known band. I first bought Faust Tapes and couldn't get into it, then got Faust IV and liked it much better. Later, after getting into a few other experimental artists, I saw Faust's fairly recent Wumme Years box set, and took a wild chance and bought it. Now I'm crazy about them too - even love Faust Tapes now! The only one I can live without is the first album, but even it is an interesting listen. If anyone likes either Can or Faust, you may want to try Neu!, who fit right in musically and chronologically. I'd love to hear more Krautrock recommendations! Feel free to email me. The third album (totally lacking any cymbals if anybody cares to know) in both English and German(slightly different mixes and the alternate take of Biko) is a GREAT AND INFLUENTIAL ALBUM! Security was mediocre, and then came the shallow "Sting and Paul Simon are the way": US...God do I hate the videos for that album! What happened? I can only grin and feel happy that most of his fans of the last 15 years are unaware of his previously dismal and negative view of life ( his true genius!) I'm sorry Biko was such a great song..he turned it into a career move........" Again, I ask, how exactly is Security "mediocre"? And I'm sorry you "hate the videos" for Us - what about the music? Oh, and by the way, you missed out So and Passion, the latter being the darkest and most impressive Peter Gabriel recording of all. As for "I can only grin and feel happy that most of his fans of the last 15 years are unaware of his previously dismal and negative view of life ( his true genius!)" - well, I've been a Gabriel fan since before his solo career even started and I'm unaware of any "dismal and negative view of life" in any of his work. Perhaps I'm not just listening to this stuff at the same hyper-intelligent, superdismal level as you, Michael. One final, and quite serious, question: In what way(s) is Eddie Jobson a "better" musician than Brian Eno? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 09:25:28 -0700 From: "David C." Subject: Beat to Understand Beat has everything. A touch of new wave; (Neal). A ballad and a video; (Heartbeat). A touch of far east; Satori. Brilliant spellbinding rhythms; Waiting Man. Requiem. This song best demonstrates the sign of things to come when the allmighty quartet first graced the stage on the Three of a Perfect Pair tour and thus Entry of the Crims was born. I love this stuff. Mayhem; Nuerotica. Demi god like groove; Howler Two Hands is not my fave either but the guitar parts do weave a spell if you give it a listen and the percussion counter attacks an otherwise somewhat normal song. K.C.'s trademark. Beat is by far the most eclectic of the 80's and covers the gamut. Any more bashing? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 13:45:20 -0300 From: Michael Hackett Subject: Re: SACD On Wed, 21 Aug 2002 07:47:19 EDT, CDCDB at aol dot com wrote: > With all the KC Remastering going on, anyone know if the recordings > will be pressed in the new SACD format? The fact that they did the transfers at 24-bit/96kHz PCM suggests that DVD-Audio is the more likely target. If I understand correctly, the DSD format used by SACD really requires transfers be done directly from the analog masters into DSD, to get the full sonic benefits. Just as long as DGM opts not to use the audible "watermarking" the big labels are using on DVD-Audio, I would be happy with either format. But the DVD-A camp seems to have bungled the roll-out so badly that the format looks to be in trouble already, and perhaps Mr. Fripp & co. are deciding to wait for things to settle down before putting a lot of effort into the DVD releases. ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #1011 *********************************
