No doubt he would rather describe it as 'moderating'. Call it what you like, it all boils down to censorship in the end - the filtering out of 'undesirable' statements. You could call a lion an ant-eater, but it would still give you a nasty nip. Richard [ Yep, you got it. I censor ET posts. Always have. Always will. I put the word in quotes as a little (very little, in this case, it would seem) joke. I guess the only way I can truly make people understand why I believe that moderation -- CENSORSHIP -- is essential, in order to produce a decent newsletter, is to show you the kind of posts that get censored.. er, I mean, "moderated". But I can't really do that (and anyway, my life is too short). I would simply advise any readers that don't care for moderated, censored, newsletters, to simply look elsewhere. -- Toby ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 12:39:20 +0000 From: "Anna Rose" Subject: Teenage Crim fans Hi everyone! Haha, I beat everyone that emailed me because I am only 13 and started on Crim aged 9 (only 'I Talk to the Wind' and 'The Night Watch', all else came 2 years later - but it's a start). For the person who asked, I live in Kenya but am due to move to Edinburgh sometime soon. I would like to know what other prog teenage Crim fans like. For me it's a long list: Yes, ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd, all the weird stuff like Can and Gong...(etc. etc) And what other music do you like? I listen to the blues-based rock of the 60s and 70s, and a small amount from 80s. Thanks, from Anna. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 15:08:51 +0100 From: Sandy Starr Subject: Turn of the Night Watch Am I the only person who sees a similarity between 'The Night Watch', on the King Crimson album 'Starless and Bible Black', and 'Turn of the Century', on the Yes album 'Going for the One'? To be sure, the pieces are very different, both musically and lyrically. But they have a similar emotional effect on me, and I think I have some idea why. 'The Night Watch' is a about a painter. 'Turn of the Century' is about a sculptor. Each has a delicate, almost baroque feel which might be explained as 'creativity twice removed' - a creative work about a creative work. Robert Fripp's guitar work on 'The Night Watch' and Steve Howe's guitar work on 'Turn of the Century', while - again - very different in style, have a certain common poignancy which owes a lot to their restraint. Fripp and Howe are holding back rather than grandstanding, which allows their skills with their instrument to shine through. 'Eloquent' is how I'd describe their playing. These kinds of similarities between different pieces by different musicians occur to me all the time. I'm just curious as to whether anyone shares them! All the albuns of King Crimson, I think, they are conceptual pieces of music and a concept, is a brick or, if you want, a rock, a singular object can be throught the window, if you don't use the brick to build a courthouse or a jail, in that case, there is no singular object, but many objects, all the same, like the music we hear in the most of radio stations, moleculares bricks in a wall, no nomadic experiences of thought, using a Gilles Deleuze expression, open new "vistas", no building walls, the walls of power, where happenning the domestication of force, the force of affirmation, one thing after the other, like the lyrics of King Crimson, that prove anything (elephant talk?), the contra-power linguage, discipline versus indicipline, content versus intensity, forme versus frame, like de cinema pictures, 1,2, 3, 4, into infinito, fractal, a crazy vector, who make lost in sapce, where the music of Crimson and, specially, the guitar of Mr. Fripp, take us. 2000 II, of Robert Fripp, is a exemple of that. This ambiental track, including in the compilation, "Swarm of the Drones 2", take the listener out of space, not behind Alfa Centauro, but into a fractal reality, inumhan existence, the virtual capacity of becoming other, and other, and other (Schizophrenia?), that actually, the force of power don't recognize. Because the concept is free, without limits, out of the jail, it scares the people, habituate to the sentences of the power's media, and most of the people prefere the security of a sentence, and don't like the sensation of new, strange, sometimes against the state-happy, the easygoing propose by the status, adverse to the level of thought, who's transforme language in virtual levels of reality, not accept for the grade zero of reality, unanimous and consensual. The music of King Crimson never be general acceptted or unanimous. In fact, they have our detractores. Why? Maybe, because the project, since the begining, have changed and changed, becomig other thing... How many fases, how many faces, the project had and evolving... to where? Only the future can tell us. There detractores don't understand, but that because King Crimson are so great! I figured that this would be a good place to elicit some help. I love the artsy lounge stuff of Roxy Music and even some of King Crimson's stuff [I'm thinking of some stuff with Belew]. Are there any other good bands lounge/glam bands to check out? Also, I am in the dark on Peter Gabriel. Apart from Passion, I haven't heard any of his solo work (but love his work with Genesis). Where should I start? Thanks.
