I'm not sure if anyone included Alphonso Johnson in the ongoing mention of stick players out there. Johnson first came to my attention as the bassist in my favorite edition of Weather Report ( yes that's right--a lineup without Jaco Pastorious! ). He subsequently made a couple of solo albums of melodic jazz-funk-pop with a bunch of fusion all-stars in the late 70's in which he played bass, stick and even sang some. The stick was such an integral part of these records that he posed with one in the photos for the second album's cover. I haven't heard these albums in years and don't know if they're available on CD, but if you come across one it's worth a listen. There's some good stick stuff in there.
